• Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America -- from a previous post. Good background. It was published prior to Katrina.
  
  
• 1 Dead in Attic: After Katrina -- collection of stories from the Times-Picayune (before they became nola.com)
  
  
• The Storm: What Went Wrong and Why During Hurricane Katrina--the Inside Story from One Louisiana Scientist -- author is a civil engineer and looks at the science
  
  
• The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast -- first hand accounts from people on the ground. 700 pages.
  
  These are books that friends and relatives have asked me about which is why I list them. there are many, many more books out there. read some reviews and make up your own mind.

I'll miss the Times-Picayune, but not half as much as I'll continue to miss Chris Rose.
