i ordered this about a week ago. it came in today and i immediately installed it using these tools and also used this youtube video to build up courage. warning: slight gore as he pries the rift open with a metal flat tip screwdriver.

overall effect on quality: greatly improved. it'll blur if you leave smudged fingerprints everywhere though.
darkens the screen: barely noticeable. removing the screen door completely outweighs this. can't even tell in-game. i only noticed when i had the screen set to a completely white picture, and could see both the screen with and without the 3M filter on top, while i was working on it.
it probably modifies the contrast slightly. i can't really tell and don't have a contrastometer.
3M material was what the source i relied on suggested; "smoked" privacy screen. i used the 10 inch size in the link above because it was only $20, but this does not give you a lot of margin of error. the 12 inch size costs around $40.
i just rolled a bit of scotch tape up. original author of the mod suggests the width of a nickel.
suggestions: work in a clean environment. the more time you take on this project, the better it will work. use some powder free disposable gloves and keep a can of compressed air handy.
