I'll throw in 5.11 bags. I EDC the Rush 12 regardless of what I'm doing (somedays it is work + school + gym) and have never run out of space.

You shouldn't. Even if the backpack looks decent in pictures, you will be disappointed once it does arrive if you decide to buy.

5.11 Rush 12 Only about $40 more expensive, but will definitely last you a LOT longer.

5.11 Rush 24? Or if that's too big, then its little brother the Rush 12. Not the prettiest looking, but it's rugged.

First off, ditch the Block and get a mans gun. (JK, JK!!! It's a joke!)

For the knife, just go to a Cabelas, or what have you and hold a few, manipulate the opening mechanism and decide what you like. I've had the same Benchmade for going on 3 years and it's still in great shape.

For the wallet, I've had the Saddleback ID wallet for about 2 years and it just keeps getting better and better as it gets a more worn look. I love it and strongly recommend it.

Phone case: personal preference on form/function, I'm rocking the Magpul case because I like the color and minimalist design while still giving adequate protection.

Check out the 5.11 Rush 12 for carrying your stuff, I have used one every day for work and school for the last 2 years and it's great, no complaints.

This is a good alternative for way cheaper. I've heard great things about the GR1, either way you can't go wrong. :)

  1. Consider bringing an extra water bottle (Nalgene HDPE bottles are light and sturdy)/hydration bladder if you have room in your ruck. Keeping water in means it also keeps water out, so you can pack stuff into the bottle and it'll stay dry (extra pair of socks, a small snack), which keeps the bottle from being wasted space. And if your hydration bladder fails and you have no backup option, you are Fucked with a capital F. Don't be Fucked with a capital F.

  2. Listen to /u/jamesvreeland. You don't pass Selection and a billion events without knowing your shit.

  3. Don't bring a North Face/Jansport bag to an event, particularly not a Challenge. I'm not saying it won't survive, but if it doesn't, it's a nightmare scenario. Not saying it will happen (I've seen those bags survive events), but you wanna minimize the risk. Go to a surplus store like James and /u/perryw said and get an ILBE, or consider a 5.11 Rush 12. They're tough enough to survive an event.

If you dont mind the 'tactical' look, take a look at MOLLE options. They are like Lego for bags.

5.11 Rush Backpack. It has a bit of a tactical feel to it but if that's your taste, it's awesome. I have the Rush 12 but can imagine that a 24 would be more suitable for your usage.

I've got the 511 RUSH12 and it's worked great for me.

Yeah, I've never had one go more than 2 year. At least up until I looked up reddit threads for good backpacks and finally began walking the righteous path.

Not 100% the same, but...
