There are a ton of great places to go in the Gorge, and Multnomah Falls is literally my least favorite, because it's just a big waterfall in front of a parking lot. Having grown up in Washington, big waterfalls aren't particularly exotic to me. If you can find a copy of this book, he covers many of the best ones pretty well.

This only half an answer but I've very much enjoyed these books to help familiarize me with Portland and Oregon in general.
As much as the internet is awesome and sites like oregonhikers.org is great, there is just too much information.
