Finding out about the suicide by
Robert Enke after getting home from a gym session.

I read the book about him a year later and it was insightful on what he had to endure during his career and also in life.

I kept close tabs on him during the time it happened because he was Adler's rival for the No.1 spot in the German goal and it was a really close and honest battle between two sportsmen.

It has been translated to English and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading, especially if interested in the psychological aspect.

A life too short really illuminating book. To me it was eye-opening that this person who had so many positive things going for him and still couldn't be happy.

I played goalie growing up, both in hockey and soccer, and it never ceases to amaze me how widespread the feeling of isolation and anxiety is among goalies. Between Robert Enke, Gigi Buffon and Corey Hirsch, it's crazy how common these mental health issues are even among the best athletes in the world.

Absolutely love the awareness and conversations it's generating though, because it's true- as soon as you tell anyone about it, all of a sudden they don't trust you between the sticks. So, what do you do? Keep quiet, bury it, and do your job...all the while letting it build and build until it comes to a head. Sports, and especially goalkeeping, has had a suck it up mentality for far too long. There's a difference between being tough, and being unhealthy, and I'm glad that's coming to light. I sincerely hope kids read these stories and know that no matter what they're feeling and going through, that other people (even Stanley Cup and World Cup winners) go through it too and that there's no shame in reaching out for help.

Not surprising. Goalkeeper is one of the most difficult roles in football. Sadly, that reflects in the personal lives of players as well. A great book about this https://www.amazon.com/Life-Too-Short-Tragedy-Robert/dp/0224091662

Short version - signed on a free in 2002 to provide competition to Bonano and Valdes (coming up from the youth system). Played badly in his debut resulting in Barca losing a cup game to a 3rd division team. Only played a few other games (one La Liga sub appearance, European dead rubber games) that season. Loaned out to Turkey and then Tenerife before returning to Germany.

Long version - recommended reading.
