• David Mamet: On Directing Film (yes it's about directing, but Mamet also focuses on what's important about the story and how to tell it.)
  
  
• American Cinematographer subscription
  
  
  Also, watch (a lot of) films multiple times, pay attention how stories are told visually, analyze them and figure out what works and what doesn't work (for you).

I think A Man With A Camera by Nestor Almendros is one of the best books on cinematography ever written, and sounds exactly like what you'd be looking for.

First filmmaking book I ever read, and one of the better ones. Journalistic approach to his whole process with great anecdotes about some of the most classic films.
