Looks pretty similar to the Acer Aspire 5 so for an extra $70 the differences are:

256GB SSD vs 1 TB HDD
MX150 vs Vega 8 iGPU

This Acer Aspire 5? https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD

If so, then you certainly don't have a hardware issue. I would recommend making sure all your drivers are up to date and checking the integrity of the game files on your game. (just google it if you aren't sure how)

Apples to Apples the Swift is a more premium laptop the MX150 + I5 8250 Aspires go for $600 https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD

If you can go to 600$:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD

Dont go for the i7, that is a Coffee Lake i5, its already 4 cores, 8 threads, you get 8GB of RAM, a quad core cpu, FHD display and SSD, I think you can add an HDD for extra storage space.

Search this model around, because its a great bang for buck .

u/truedublock · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

For 600$ you can get her a dedicated Mx150 GPU, and for $650 she can have a 1050 Ti

$650 $600 $500 $400

Just remember everything below $600 does not have a discrete GPU, and the settings for sims might have to be turned down a decent amount.

(Or you could build a second PC for her, if she’s moved in with you ;) )

u/techstar2000 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

That laptop has the Intel 620 integrated graphics card. ..If you want a laptop with a dedicated graphics card with similar specs and appearance, I would recommend this Acer Swift 3 has similar specs but better graphics , thanks to its MX 150 graphics card.

u/ice0rb · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Considering MGS:V is arguably a difficult game to play for a laptop, I recommend the Acer Aspire 5. It's not the most beautiful or the thinnest but it is really value packed, a dGPU and a 8th gen i5 for $570. The screen and the speakers aren't the best, but for your price they're decent.

Generally speaking the MX150 is the best dGPU in this price point up to maybe $1300ish.
Here's it on MGSV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxVq24Pb_Mo

Then you might want to consider a new, more modern device. The Acer Aspire E 15 is a good option, it has a low-end dedicated MX150 graphics card. In combination with the i5 processor, you can run older games just fine. The laptop should be much faster since it has an SSD, it will make general use more fluid and boot times quicker. I think the dedicated MX150 graphics card will be benefical for your use.

I don't think going for a 9 year old Alienware would be the best option... there is a good chance that the MX150 performs better.

u/SolidCalm · 3 pointsr/laptops

That's a good laptop, but I'd save money to get a better one, for like $600 you can get a beast that will last for a lot of years.

This one is A BEAST that run games, and everything you want. Even video editing is possible here.

In my opinion you'll regret if you buy a laptop worse than this one. Cheap laptops are useless nowadays. Maybe in the future there're nice cheap laptops, but today, they're horrible.

If you are open to other option, I would recommend this [Acer Aspire 5] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KCJHMD/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because it comes with everything you may need, 8th generation, i5 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good SSD storage of 256GB for faster boot up and loading, 15.6 inch Full HD screen which is a must have for this price range, GeForce MX150 GPU that should be able to handle games on low to medium settings with good FPs, long battery life, high build quality, and it’s within the same price range.

Hi,

Based on your requirements I have made this noteb search

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

If you want another option you could check this out: Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G (2018) - Intel i5-8250U, NVIDIA Geforce MX150, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD - 4.83 lbs, over 6H of battery life - you can find it here amazon for 903 CAD with I5 and 1100 CAD with I7

u/kayile · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks. These two models had come up in my own google'ing, so good to know there's some general strength in numbers for recommendations. What was confusing to me during my search is BOTH the $350 and $600 options are Aspire E 15. Have to get down to model number for differences, and not every site listed that info. They just said "E 15".

For the $350 E 15 option, do you know roughly how much additional RAM & SSD may cost me? Is laptop SSD a different size than desktop SSD (I presume it's smaller??). I have a spare desktop SSD that's unused, was wondering if I could use it.

Lastly, during my search for different Acer lines, the Aspire 5 also came up for $550: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/

Do you have thoughts on how that compares to the $600 E 15, both of which use the MX150.

u/TheChosenFool · 2 pointsr/lowendgaming

I was on a budget and went with this one https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1527013303&sr=1-9&keywords=acer+aspire#customerReviews. I wouldn't recommended it though because the display is a TN panel. I got use to it though and don't mind anymore.

u/MoldSki · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Does your budget have a little leeway? There an acer e5 with a mx150 that can just barely run AAA games at a acceptable frame rate.

This one has a MX150 (Pretty much a 1030), Quad core, backlight on keyboard, Has num pad, 15.6 inch, and has a decent battery life. The downside is that the screen isn't very bright or color accurate for an IPS panel. At $600 dollars, it is a good deal. Either this or just have a look at $900 laptops for black friday. If you find laptops you need help with just send me a message and I'll be happy to help.

Is the 17" display something you really want/need? It makes it hard to find a good laptop for under $500 that also has a 17" display.

Here's is a 15" Acer laptop that's $550 so a bit over your proposed budget, but it's a significantly better laptop:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/

Specs:

  • Intel Core i5-8250U (4 cores, 8 threads)
  • 15.6" 1920 x 1080 TN panel display
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2 GB VRAM
  • 8GB DDR4 Dual Channel
  • 256GB SSD

If you really want that 17" display, then here's a refurbished Dell laptop for $510. Specs are kind of similar to the Acer.:

    http://outlet.us.dell.com

    Specs:

  • Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (4 cores, 8 threads)
  • 17.3" 1600 x 900 TN panel display
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • 8GB DDR4 2400MHz (1x8GB)
  • 1TB 5.4K RPM Hard Drive

Where are you purchasing from?

For what you are doing you should favor CPU, Memory, and Storage (SSD)

https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i5-8250U-NanoEdge-Fingerprint-F510UA-AH51/dp/B0762S8PYM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1511901255&sr=1-1&keywords=i5+8250u

that is $500 without an SSD, has everything else.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511901295&sr=8-3&keywords=i5+8250u+mx150

This is $600 if you can wait for it to be in stock...

That has the latest 8th gen intel. So you will get lots of battery life, 8 threads for your CPU, and the second one has a decent dedicated GPU... meaning that if you want to do anything graphic intensive it is there... which is always the problem with laptops. It will help with overall image quality, media playback, and if you decide to do anything more.

If you're able to afford it/return your current laptop, check out these options:

  • [Acer Aspire 5]

^ This is the best option if you're looking for something new. It costs $550 and since it has a relatively new dedicated graphics card, it is more than enough for school/light gaming.

  • ASUS VivoBook F510UA

^ A newer version of your laptop that has the same CPU as the Acer, but has no SSD nor dedicated graphics. Is actually pretty sleek looking for the price. $509

  • Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5577

^ Much more powerful than the other two laptops but also older, and maybe not the best for school due to its bulk. Is much much much better for gaming. Most expensive one listed here at $655.49

  • HP elitebook 8470p

^ Cheapest laptop that can run minecraft with 40 to 60 fps. Is refurbished. Has good keyboard and surprisingly built like a tank, with the most metal out of all the laptops linked, but is also a bit bulky for school. Screen is only 720p screen like your current one. Way less powerful than other laptops but CPU is still an upgrade from your current. $263.99

    Edit: spelling & formatting.
u/Kaladrion · 1 pointr/computers

First one. The other one you've sent me is even older, and its gpu doesn't support fortnite. Yes, fortnite requires GTX 660. But this laptop has GTX 660M. That M means that it's a special series made for laptops only, which lacks in performance compared to desktop counterpart because they were optimised for laptops in order to save on battery power and cooling.
In that price range, https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD?th=1, id pick this one. Not a gamer tipe, but it has quad core cpu, will run Windows 10 well, and has a better GPU than either of the two probably (gtx 765 might give it a run for its money, but since it's a laptop version, I doubt). Not to mention that this one is a new product and you'll get a warranty too.

u/max_turner · 1 pointr/learndesign

I'm not learning graphic design. I'm learning UI design and I can do it fairly well in my computer that has 2gb ram and a9 year old Core 2 duo processor.

So this one is more than enough for what you need

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD

It has a dedicated graphic card, Full HD screen and an i5 8th Gen processor and 8gb ram. You're getting more than what you're asking for in this price range.

This one is a favorite on the sub and is pretty nice - you can also take the extra 200 bucks and add more RAM or a second drive if you want. MX150 should be able to handle new stuff on medium today without issue.

> She uses her laptop mostly for internet. Rowing and video streaming. She also likse to play the SIMs sometimes. She would really like it to last for at least 5 years and hopefully more.

What do you mean by "Rowing"?

The Sims 4 has pretty low system requirements so you do not need an expensive laptop to run the game. Generally speaking a laptop can last 5 years if properly taking care of. But it is hard to predict when electronics can fail. For example, I had an Asus GTX 960 which failed less than 2 months after the warranty expired.

The Sims 4 can be played with integrated graphics, especially if it has a quad core AMD Ryzen 5 2500u APU with the RX Vega 8 integrated graphics core which is about 2x more powerful than the Intel UHD 620 graphics core found in 8th gen i3, i5, i7. That makes the Vega 8 roughly similar to the nivida 930m (assuming the system RAM is running at full speed or Dual Channel); not spectacular, but pretty good for integrated graphics. You can buy the Dell Inspiron 5575 with the Ryzen 5 2500u for $475 at Amazon.com. The only bad thing is that it seems to only have 1 stick of RAM, not two sticks. That means the RAM will be operating at half speed rather than full speed which can limit performance by 10% - 20% depending on the specific game. A simple fix though by simply install in another stick of RAM.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-i5575-A217SLV-PUS-Inspiron-5575-LED-Backlit/dp/B07BPPS7CK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1541437897&sr=8-3&keywords=dell+inspiron+5575&dpID=415VG3VrHML&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

The next bump up in graphics performance would be a laptop with a nvidia MX150 who's performance is roughly half way between the GTX 950m and GTX 960m which are the former "gaming GPUs" before the Geforce 10 series was released. The Acer Aspire 5 is currently the least expensive laptop with the mx150 and quad core i5-8250u CPU for $577.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/ref=sr_1_13?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1541438210&sr=1-13&keywords=mx150+laptop

The next bump up in performance would be something like the Dell Inspiron 5577 laptop with an i5-7300HQ and GTX 1050 GPU for $666. The GTX 1050 is overkill for the Sims 4, but nevertheless it does come in far less than the $1,000 budget. It recycles the chassis of the of the older Dell Inspiron 7559 (which has the GTX 960m).

basically anything mid tier considering they spec the reccomended equipment at a "Nvidia GTX 550 Ti" "8 gig ram" and " threads @ 3.2Ghz". the acer aspire particularity comes to mind, but anything around its range should be good.

that games had major running issues from what i know tho, last time i played it on my 1050ti it had some lag spikes s expect them no matter what.

Semi related question--do you know why the Acer Swift 3 costs $720, while the Acer Aspire 5 (Link Here) costs only $600? Granted, the Aspire is only out of stock, but the specs seem to be the same--just that the Swift has a 14" screen while the Aspire is 15.6"--but that shouldn't be the reason why the Aspire is cheaper by $120?
