you're fairly limited in the 400-500 dollar range. I would suggest checking out acer's aspire lineup or dell's inspiron lineup. Make sure it has more than 4gb of ram, and try to find something with an i5 or better. this is a fairly good option. If you can go a few bucks over $500, then definitely get the Acer Aspire E5-573G 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop. It would do a decent job for you by allowing you to get those targeted FPS in those games mentioned- courtesy of its decent core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and of course, its NVIDIA GeForce 940M 2GB dedicated graphics card.

Just looking at the specs You'd probably be better off buying this laptop. It was an Amazon suggestion but i don't know uh,capable the battery is or how badly underclocked the parts are for laptops.

I'm just going to go ahead and link you to r/SuggestALaptop for a better equipped suggestion, but I can give it a shot. That budget might be a little rough.

Autocad is generally single threaded, with some actions requiring more, so you'll be fine with a laptop i5/i7 (dual core without, and with hyperthreading), and won't require a HQ SKU CPU (4 actual cores). RAM is going to be a big consideration, since it's fairly easy to fill up. Autodesk recommends 8, which should be alright, but up to 16 is going to be better. The GPU is definitely worth having, but it doesn't need to be incredible. Something like a GT940M or higher is absolutely fine.

13-inch option - $1099

Premium option - $1299

Look for this Acer laptop OP. It has GREAT specs for its price. Though most probably you'll have to spend about 35k if you get this in addition with Microsoft Office (unless you get LibreOffice). Go to TipidPC for better pricing.

I know you guys can't really answer this question for me but just curious on opinions...

I'm in college and, as a college guy tends to, I like to game. What game varies: Overwatch, League of Legends, DOOM, Diablo 3, StarWars Battlefront, etc etc. I also use my laptop for school obviously, but not important right now. I initially had a first laptop, but it ended up not being able to run anything, really. Anything it could run was all low settings. I upgraded to this laptop. I can run things but usually 45FPSish at medium-low settings.

I'm thinking of possibly selling my laptop to buy some cheapo/thing Chromebook type deal for class and building one of those mini-PC things along the lines of this (although obviously a lot less nice stuff in it). However, I've never built a PC so I'm not sure how hard this would be, I'm not sure if I would be overestimating it's "portability" (it would mainly be sitting on my desk in my dorm and occasionally driven home/back), or how powerful it can be.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone done anything similar?

I just bought this one and it seems to run it just fine. I have a few things turned off, but it still looks good. It is a pretty good deal for $500, there are quite a few with similar specs that go for $100+ more. If you put a SSD in there with the money saved, it should run even better.

Aw, that's a shame. It does seem to require a pretty powerful PC. Mine meets the recommended specs (barely), but it's a laptop and cost me $550! It took a long time to save up for, but I'm sooo happy with it. If you can afford it and are looking for a nice (relatively) mid-range gaming laptop, this is the one I bought! The exact same specs aren't available, as mine was i5, Cotton White with a 17.3 inch monitor. If you don't mind black and a slightly smaller screen, I definitely recommend it! I totally understand if it's out of your price range though, believe me. Well for one, the game is PoE, and even a multi billion dollar PC would lag with PoE.

Spec wise they're good, and I can't really assess the laptops on a brand-by-brand basis though. But so far, reviews say that this is quite good. Especially for cash-strapped gamers.

TBH, I would just get this laptop Don't really look at the gaming laptop. I just found the best laptop for that price range. Not only is this much smaller, it is much more powerful then whatever you might build. Laptops are one thing I would not reccomend building unless you have a lot of experience.

Although I don't think it would be too bad to spend extra and get this which was what I was originally going to buy. My laptop does about 40-70 FPS on Low @ 1600x900 (I think, been a while since I only use the laptop when I'm away from my home.) in Fallout 4. Struggles a bit in other games. I'm sure the 2nd laptop I linked could run it at a mix of Medium and Low at 1920x1080

Lenovo G50-80. I warn you though, in some graphically intense areas(such as overdrives in FF X in pcsx2), you'll get some slowdowns thanks to the iGPU. I got my laptop for 600 dollars, and I think you can get laptops with 940ms for about that, such as this one.

Well this configuration comes with better CPU/i GPU for slightly over 550, and this configuring comes with a weaker CPU and 1tb HDD instead of SSD.

This needs more upvotes for actually sourcing and finding a product that meets the needs of the post rather than just jumping on the ship going down and then suggesting an ITX case.

luckily, I got it for around $400 on sale, but this laptop is not what I expected. I get that it's a budget laptop, but it runs WoW at 17 fps. Have a lot of software engineer buddies try and optimize it, but we found out it's just the i5 that runs the game like shit.

the touchpad sucks, and the keyboard is a cheap piece of shit. If I could go back in time, I'd drop the extra ~$100-$150 and get the i7 at least.

This laptop also has a decent build quality and a nice 1 TB storage.

This one might work. 940M 4GB and 8GB DDR3, but the HDD is slow and I have a distrust of Acer laptops. (and strangely, the better processor is less expensive)

Unfortunately, this won't work. You need to have a dedicated graphics card.

An Nvidia 940m will do just fine. I've seen a few Acer laptops with this card. You'll probably have to spend a little more, though.
