The i3 C720 is only marginally faster than the newer Celeron C740, which is a lot cheaper and features some welcome improvements in build quality (the main one is they reinforced the screen lid which has a disturbing tendency to bow in on the C720s). Their Octane scores are like 1500 points apart. I don't think the 740 comes with 32GB storage though.

edit: uh OP you do know there are some serious hoops to jump through in order to get one of these to run Windows, right?

Look for a used C740. I found mine on Amazon for $150. It's in like new condition.

The Acer C740 - 4GB RAM can be found for 155 USD on Amazon, and it features the Celeron 3205U with 15K Octane scores a.k.a it performs much snappier than any nXXXX Celeron on the other budget Chromebooks (<200$) because they are basically rebranded Atom processors, and this one is based on the Haswell arhitecture which is also used to build i3/i5 processors.

It's lightweight and nicely constructed and not to mention somewhat sleek too. It's scheduled to recieve Android support (through end of 2016/beggining of 2017). The battery's around 9 hours (depends on usage, as always). The only real drawback is the screen, which isn't IPS but it's still far from the worst.

Watch & read a couple of reviews on Youtube/Tech Sites/Amazon to get a better idea of the device yourself. I've seen people reccomend the other 11' Acer but the processor is the lowest of the current low end, and for the same price you get only 2GB of RAM compared to 4GB of RAM which you get on the C740. The bad hardware doesn't make up for the IPS screen IMO which is pretty mediocre from what I've seen.

Grab Acer C740 if you can, I feel that it's the best 11.6" Chromebook with all things considered.
(Link: here)

It has >10k Octane Score, comes with Play Store but with a TN panel screen.

Hope this helps. :)

Acer Chromebook. Fucking love this little guy. Its linked to google drive so it keeps everything there. Chrome OS means no games to distract me. I just update my sheets for my training log.

Is this it? And if so, is it really 4.6 pounds?

Edit: Looks like the CDW page for the C740 C4PE lists it as 3.1 pounds. I'm not sure which one to believe.

I'm looking to buying my first chromebook too and like you this is what I have my sights on. Acer Chromebook R 11 CB5-132T-C1LK

Although I'm also considering Acer Chromebook 11 C740-C4PE this one with an upgraded ssd

If given the option, is the 2014 Dell 11 (with an i3) better than the Acer C740 (without an i3 like this one)

u/Pockets69 · 1 pointr/chromeos

yes the c740 is newer, and it is an upgrade, and it is faster as well.

The reason people are not picking the c740 more, is that crouton and chrubuntu have a few bugs and were not really optimized to run on the new processors, i believe that all has been fixed (but not entirely sure), also the c740 is a bit more "rugged" and a bit heavier than the c720.

they are not directly sold by amazon, but does that make a difference to you?

You can get the Acer C740 with 4GB RAM on Amazon. for $350 CAD, if you're willing to save up and go a little over budget.

Or you can go for the 4GB RAM HP Chromebook 11.

I definitely recommend you buy a Chromebook with 4GB RAM.

I guess I'm leaning towards the Acer C740

Is the performance as good as the Acer Chromebook 14?

I have a Acer C740 Chromebook that I purchased for $160 and running Gallium OS. It is a wonderful little device and I can get up to nine hours of battery life. It also serves as a small media center when I am at home.

My phone is a buy-it-for-life phone, the Kyocera DuraForce. For my service provider I went with Republic Wireless and their 1GB plan for $20/mo.

My desktop runs stock Windows 7 and is a eight year old HP Z800, roughly analogous to a dual-processor Mac Pro from 2009. You can pick up Z800's from ebay for a few hundred dollars and have a dirt cheap 24-GB dual-processor system.
