As a follow up question, what mouthwash, if any? I'd heard that this was the recommended one: http://www.amazon.com/ACT-Anticavity-Fluoride-Mouthwash-18-Ounce/dp/B001349SQ4

Listerine does reduce plaque and gingivitis, but has no fluoride so it doesnt have the same effects as ACT. FYI fluoride mouth rinses are available on amazon.com

I use this, from ACT:

They have some other mouthwash that I hate, so be careful:

I'm honestly not sure what the difference is supposed to be. My only criteria for mouthwash are alcohol-free and with fluoride, which these both theoretically meet, but the second one was a terrible experience (more CPC, I guess.)

There are probably other brands/formulations that are okay, too, I stopped looking once I found this one.
