That table looks fantastic (bonus points for the cute kitten)!

Did you just have the wood laying around/in your yard, or did you buy something for the project?

As a few others have alluded to (some less helpful than others), it's generally not the best idea to have your speakers on the same surface as the turntable unless you have some sort of isolation pads. It can cause unwanted resonance and distortion. Especially because the LP60 is already not the best tracking table out there, it may be something you want to consider when you have the time/funds. I like these for isolation if you're keen to keep the speakers on the table.

But seriously, great work on that woodwork!

Get some isolation pads, that’ll tighten up the bass. Also, unless you are using the desk while listening, move the speakers closer to the front.

>cushion things that angle them nicely

Monitor isolation. Tidies up the frequency range by isolating the sound vibrations so they don't vibrate the desk/stand/whatever surface the monitors are on.

I have this brand for my 305's and they work perfectly and are cheaper than other equivalents. The ones in the link will fit your 308's.

The only function of spikes is to prevent speakers from being too wobbly on thick shag carpetting, so they serve a purpose there.
Put some foam between the stand and the speakers to help decouple the speakers for a tighter sound. Think yoga mat or children's play surface foam. Inch thick will do the trick. https://www.amazon.com/Adam-Hall-SPADECO2-Monitor-Isolation/dp/B007YFWUDO of buy those and cut to fit your speakers with a good kitchen knife on top of a cutting board. These pads and others like it allow aiming speakers slightly down, straight, or slightly upward.

When you place the stands on the hardwood floor, what you hear as 'bass' is actually out of phase resonances of the floor. Your housemates or neighbours will perceive this with much annoyance =}
Bookshelf speakers rarely have any bass to speak of though under 100 hz - getting a decent sub wíll do the trick.

If the bass is totally absent in your bookshelves it may also be due to poor placement - they may be too far apart from each other, and or the room resonances may be cancelling out the speaker's output in some areas of the room. Try placing them closer together - no closer than distance to yourself when listening - and a little bit away from the wall behind them. http://www.tnt-audio.com/casse/waspe.html a decent guide ( except for the mentioning of spikes on a wooden floor - utterly useless )

Are absorbtion plates like this worth it when you place your speakers including a big subwoofer on the table?

Hey, yeah a setup like this would work for movies on a TV just as well. Putting the speakers on stands gives you the best sound quality, but you can put the speakers on a TV stand without problems too. Though I would advise putting something underneath them for isolation (small foam blocks or something like this).

Now for movies small bookshelf speakers might not have enough low-end, so a subwoofer would be a good addition if you really want deep rumbling bass. Otherwise for normal music (non-EDM) just the speakers should be sufficient.

Yep. I got these for my center speaker. Only used the skinnier half and used the thicker stuff for some bookshelves in my office. Gets the job done.

I bought something similar to this not sure if you need it or not.

BTW your setup looks clean and amazing, one thing I don't like is the XL mouse pad :)

They're Adam Hall Isolation Pads: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007YFWUDO/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When we purchased them back in February of 2014 we paid $22.79 and shipping was free. Ignoring the price increase, my girlfriend likes them a lot and would recommend them.

The monitors are HS8's as well. Not enough low end on the HS5's and the mids are different.

You don't need separate components: send the magni back in for the Uber mod if possible, this will let you control volume from your headphone amp. If you can't, the Sys will be ok.

You should also get proper stands: if you find isoacoustics too expensive, stack a few of these or get just a pair and use something to increase the height (books or whatever).

More importantly, get JBL LSR305s (or 308s if you have the space, which would allow you to skip the sub) instead of audioengines (which are really bad for their price - the 8" sub is also ridiculous) and eventually an SVS SB-1000 subwoofer, which integrates a crossover with a high pass filter for the main speakers.

if you don't want to move your speakers, in the meantime, you can always use isolation pads. I currently have the same speaker placement but the speakers rests on isolation pads. I don't listen to the speakers often as I rather use my headphones. But eventually I'll get some nicer bookshelf speakers + stands.

I'm wondering if you can help me out here, I have a sizable 12" 300W polk subwoofer that I really love, but since moving into my latest apartment, I find I can never use it.

I live on the top floor with neighbors below that do not appreciate the room shaking. I put down about 2" of foam. 1" of carpet padding (had it sitting around) and 1" of foam from the inside of a pelican gun case. This didn't seem to mitigate the problem at all. Even at low levels the apartment still seemed to shake.

Would an isolation pad really solve this problem?

I've been tossing around the idea of suspending the subwoofer from the ceiling using a wooden platform and steel cable. I get this would transfer the vibration to the ceiling and rafters, but no one lives above me. I've found several forums where this worked great for people in apartments, I'm just waffling between suspending my giant sub or shelling out $60+ for an isolation pad. I am leaning toward suspending it because then it doesn't take up floor space and my cats cannot wreck my cone. Perhaps even suspending with a thin vibration pad.

Edit:
What of these? http://www.amazon.com/Adam-Hall-SPADECO2-Monitor-Isolation/dp/B007YFWUDO/

I wouldn't mind dropping $23 in case I cannot return them if they don't work, but they seem significantly cheaper than everything I've seen. Although the reviews are good.

I use these:

Well you would need to put absorbers under your monitors so your desk won’t vibrate.

Personally, I prefer floor stands because they give me some extra space on my desk but it’s really up to you.

u/boostnma · 1 pointr/hometheater

Put some isolation pads under them, they will noticeably improve the sound.
