I bought the predecessor XM2 when the XM3 came out, with a hefty discount, and I am super happy about them.
Before I had the AKG N60. Loved the sound. But they are on-ears, rather than over over-ears, so less noise cancelling, but more comfort and more compact. The sound was good (better than the Sony imho), but less happy with the build quality as the foam pad (simili) leather became undone. They've now updated them, so I assume they dealt with that issue?

Source: 6 flights a month. You never realised what a godsend noise cancelling is, until you see your neighbor with his hands over you ears, switch off the noise cancelling and find out there's a kid wailing in the seat in front.
The other thing I was offered was the AKG over-the-ear headphones.

I have these by AKG. They don't have the same sound quality as my husband's fancy Sony NC headphones but they're half the size when folded. They came with a nice flexible case they fold into. They have the ability to be wired, too, so if the battery runs out, you can still use them (but without the NC). I used them for about 12 hours without recharging them (not sure how much battery was left). I find them comfortable and they did a great job for their size - for me, they're the perfect compromise. They are on ear headphones and not over the ear.
