This book was used for learning Hebrew in my Conversion course: http://www.amazon.com/Aleph-Isnt-Tough-Introduction-Hebrew/dp/0807407267/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1405438671&sr=1-2&keywords=aleph+isn%27t+enough
I supplemented it with the next book in the series: http://www.amazon.com/Aleph-Isnt-Enough-Hebrew-Adults/dp/0807407488/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1405438702&sr=1-1&keywords=aleph+isn%27t+enough
And the 3rd: http://www.amazon.com/Bet-BReishit-Hebrew-Adults-Introduction/dp/080740845X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1405438714&sr=1-3&keywords=aleph+isn%27t+enough
And the 4th: http://www.amazon.comITorah-Introduction-Hebrew-Adults-Paperback/dp/0807408476/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1405438714&sr=1-4&keywords=aleph+isn%27t+enough
If you master all of these books- you will be able to read Torah.
I also used Rosetta Stone for Hebrew- but this will not be biblical Hebrew and will teach you modern terms you won't need to know for prayer etc.
To learn the Hebrew alphabet, I recommend:

Deuteronomy 9:3 - Does it make sense to drive out and exterminate? Exterminate means to kill them all, in which case "drive out" makes no sense. Let's look at the Hebrew:
http://biblehub.com/interlinear/deuteronomy/9-3.htm
The key word "and destroy them" "v'haavadtam" whose base is "avad" which means to perish. So "haavadtam" literally means "their perishment". Combined with "drive out" the meaning to me is that they will cease to be there, their community in Israel will perish/disappear. And this makes sense in the context of Deuteronomy 9:1. The main goal isn't slaughter, the goal is to clear the land.
I haven't read "Paradise Lost". I am reading the Quran now which is difficult for me to get through. Afterwards, I will probably read some writers from the Islamic world to have some useful references for conversations at my mosque.
I have completely given up on Western (post-Christian) culture. My focus is on Islam which seems to be the only hope at this point. I have a new site which I will post to regularly:
http://www.friendsofislam.org/
But that depends on my internet service staying up, which seems beyond the capacity of Western civilization to reliably do at the moment. (My internet keeps going down.)
