I've done it using the Airport for the sharing, and some USB wifi adaptor to connect to the router.

The public access point I need to connect to is about 50 meters out of range when using the built in airport card. I do have a clear line of sight to the AP.
If you totally need a wifi adapter, Alfa makes some awesome USB Wifi adapters. Very high power, the one I'm using is capable of transmitting up to 2000mW! I am using this one and I absolutely LOVE it. I recommend these if you need a usb wifi adapter.
Linux driver support packaged on the disk that comes with the adapter.

Also if your signal strength is weak, you can use a router as a range extender. I know lots of routers (Such as the RT-N12) work well as a wireless bridge, and can boost signal strength a lot if they are placed right.
