The alphasmart is the dorkiest but most useful thing in the fucking world. It's super light, durable, and fast. On that ancient baby I have written countless short stories, a book about a gaybro werewolf, and about a dozen scripts for short shitty horror movies that never get made. :) The ReWrite notebooks are great, too--all recycled materials and the perfect travel size, with paper that has just enough tooth to make writing smooth but enjoyable.
Likely a word processor. Those types of devices used to be more popular before laptops were around or in the earlier days when a laptop was $3-4000.
They've made a comeback as of late as a tool for writers to focus. The idea is you don't get distracted by facebook and email and reddit and youtube and..so on.
All they can do is save text files and maybe upload them to a cloud account for you. I had an AlphaSmart Dana about 15 years ago and it was very helpful for my journaling. What's also great about them is the batteries last forever and they aren't nearly as fragile as a laptop or likely to be stolen.
The Freewrite is probably the nicest example of one of these right now. It's a retro-chic, overpriced device that screams Brooklyn hipster, but I secretly want one anyway.

It's a technological step backwards, and it has no backlight, but it's great for what it does. Maybe a little too noisy for the person beside you trying to sleep, but I'm sure there are better options out there along these lines.
I can think of quite a few actually.
AlphaSmart 3000, this allows for distraction free writing and if nothing else it's a cool novelty that shows you put some thought into the gift.
Mechanical keyboards, this is something not everyone likes and if they do it's still a matter of taste which one so it's best bought in a store together with them.
A nice pen and high-quality paper notebook, I know few people write offline anymore but it's still a cool gift.
Books are hard to recommend, but to consider. You could buy them a guide on writing erotica ebooks, that's a fun gift you can't really do wrong with.
Software could be nice as well, many people like Scrivener, WriteOrDie2 and the like, both are about 20-30$.
I think that what you're looking for is a portable word processor/notetaker like the Alpha Smart 3000 or the Alphasmart Neo Handheld or another similar product. I think they have the functionality, battery life, and portability that you're seeking.
Really old computers aren't going to have flash drives (they were made before those were invented). You would have to use a CD or floppy disk if its that old.
But you can make any computer just a writing machine, if that's your goal. Only download a word processor and turn off the wifi. I'm down with this, but I already own an Alphasmart so there isn't much point in a project like this.
