It's pretty cool to see a product you worked on ship. I wrote some software for the Amazon Fire TV as an intern last Summer. Though I probably won't even buy one. The Chromecast is good enough for me.

I just found out they made a commercial with Gary Busey. Check it out. It's pretty great.

u/IdRatherBeLurking · 10 pointsr/Games

Unfortunately Amazon will likely not support chromecast, since it is currently pusshing it's Fire TV

It's basically an Apple TV but in an open ecosystem, based on Android. Also has a remote, a separate game controller and a dedicated GPU so the Plex experience will likely be better than the Android app.

$100, shipping today.

Nexus Player is like the Amazon Fire TV, only with Google stuff on it.

u/renational · 3 pointsr/Roku

still, it's very compelling even if you are not an amazon prime member. if i didn't already have a roku3 i would buy the amazon box, since i'm just watching a third party subscription on them (netflix+hulu), so who provides the $100 box means nothing as long as it's got the best possible specs inside.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CX5P8FC

amazon's comparison chart has a few obvious mistakes. i do get bloomberg tv and pandora on my roku, while hbo go only works in your house if you already have a cabletv subscription in your hose. i think roku will finally have to come out with a keyboard if they want to compete with voice recognition.

u/BillDaCatt · 3 pointsr/microcomputing

It depends on what you are looking to do.

Some people are happy getting an AppleTV.

For $30 you can get a Google Chromecast and stream all kinds of HD programming over the internet or locally via Plex.

Or you could get a Raspberry Pi and run one of the distros with XBMC. (A basic understanding of Linux will be very helpful here.)

You could also get an Intel NUC and build a mediacenter PC with that, but once you buy RAM and a hard drive for it, your cost could be close to $400.

You could get a Roku.

There is also the Amazon FireTV.

The last option I can think of is to buy a new Blu ray player. Many of them have a host of mediacenter features built in including Vudu, Youtube, Hulu+, and Netflix. Some even support Amazon Prime.

I have a ChromeCast and a Raspberry Pi running RaspBMC and they both work well for me. The only thing I can't watch with either one is Amazon Prime video.

u/SoberIrishGuy · 2 pointsr/apple

I don't believe the Amazon video app supports the Chromecast, so out of those two devices the Apple TV would be your best bet.

Those aren't your only options though. The Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, and Nexus Player are all worth considering. The Roku even has native apps for all those services so you wouldn't have to stream anything from your phone.

u/jamvanderloeff · 2 pointsr/buildapc

You could use a Fire TV. Cheap and has a nice remote based interface. Runs android so you can sideload apps like NFL Game Pass that aren't on the amazon store.

u/JimboLodisC · 2 pointsr/Chromecast

A Nexus Player for $99 would be an expensive option, but it comes with a physical remote while still being able to accept casts like the Chromecast does. So they can use the remote, and anyone with a smartphone can use that to cast.

And FYI, the Fire TV stick doesn't have voice-search. You have to buy the voice remote separately for $30 or download the free mobile app. $40 stick + $30 remote = $70 .... and the Fire TV box is $99, which comes with the voice remote already... and then there's the AppleTV which just got a price drop to $69. That comes with a physical remote as well...

Here's a couple product comparisons:

u/nealosis · 2 pointsr/ps4homebrew

Whose talking about a shitty firestick? I’m talking about the FireTV, which is a stand-alone box and yes it’s way better than the Pi 3, which I also have.

https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Previous-Generation/dp/B00CX5P8FC

u/ameoba · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

It's basically the same thing as a Roku or the Amazon Fire TV.

The big difference is that it's an Apple product & ties in a little better with Apple devices & services.

u/txmed · 2 pointsr/Cordcutting

Might have more luck in some other forums which are more active like /r/corcutters

However, in my mind it comes down to:

Roku vs Fire TV vs Apple TV vs XBOX360 vs Chromecast vs an Android Box vs Computer connected to television

I'm pretty sure Netgear's NeoTV and Western Digital's WDTV don't have native Showtime Anytime apps. Plus those are dying quickly, their market share is something abysmal. Future support and app development is going to pale in comparison to your options above.

I'm not aware of any smart televisions, except maybe the new ones launching with Roku as a back OS, that have native Showtime Anytime apps.

Getting Showtime Anytime onto say a Ouya or Raspberry Pi running XBMC seems like it would be difficult if not nigh impossible.

So that leaves us with the list above. It's in order of preference. But working backwards:

  • Computer: You could just connect a laptop or another box to your television via HDMI and then use a wireless mouse/keyboard and either just pull up a browser everytime you wanted to watch Showtime or create a complex setup with a media center software like XBMC. Although to watch Showtime Anytime within XBMC you're still going to have a create a setup where the media center software essentially launches a browser. I'm not a big fan of this if the primary goal is to get Showtime Anytime onto your television. It's not simple
  • Android Box: I've never used an Android box but they don't save you a lot of money and they don't run apps native to your television. I can think of situations where they might be interesting but I don't think watching Showtime Anytime through the android tablet app is one of them. Still, it would be functional.
  • Chromecast: I really like my Chromecast. I primarily use it for tabcasting sports from my computer as plenty of legit sports apps like FoxSportsGo and NBC Live Extra and the Pac 12 Network lack native apps for any box and lack Chromecast support natively. Showtime Anytime also lacks native Chromecast support, although you have to figure it will come eventually. Tabcasting from my computer has always worked great for me. What has not worked great for me is screencasting from my Nexus 7 tablet. I don't know why that is - whether its a function of the Nexus 7 or its a function of my network (although tabcasting works great) or its a function of the apps I've tried it with (they've been the sports apps listed above, I've never tried it with Showtime Anytime). So, screencasting Showtime Anytime from your Note3 would be an option and perhaps you'd have more success with it but I can't highly recommend it since I've only had poor experiences with it (choppy, lagging, dropping the cast often).
  • XBOX: If you've already got an XBOX 360 lying around then there's your solution. Sign up for Gold (although I think I read you might not even need that nowadays) and watch Showtime Anytime natively on your game system. I'm not sure I'd run out to buy a used one for that reason but hey, plenty of people have game systems sitting around not doing a lot.
  • Apple TV: All I can say is I like my Roku box a whole lot more than my old ATV2. But Apple TV literally just got Showtime Anytime as a channel, so it would satisfy that need nicely. I would say in long term regards ATV is falling behind Roku and Chromecast. Despite Apple's size, the ATV is routinely nowadays getting channels later than Roku or Chromecast (just look at how long it took to get Showtime Anytime). Its channel selection, as compared to the Roku, is also worse. Unless you own a lot of digital iTunes content (movies, tv shows, music) I think there are better boxes.
  • Fire TV: I never used a Fire TV but it has plenty of proponents. It's got good reviews, a good and growing channel selection, cool things you can do with it rooted and, most importantly, Showtime Anytime. It might be a great option.
  • Roku: It only tops Fire TV since I have one and enjoy and I've never used a Fire TV. It has a native Showtime Anytime channel which works great for me.

    That's my vote.

The Amazon FireTV is essentially a mini computer, just like the OUYA, that you can run XBMC on. http://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-streaming-media-player/dp/B00CX5P8FC

In my opinion (and the popular opinion I think) is that the FireTV is a much better value for an XBMC box than the OUYA. It only costs around $30 more, but it is so much more powerful it'll be able to handle just about anything you throw at it mediawise. The heaviest of skins can be a tad laggy at times (I had to switch off Aeon MQ5, but some people say they run it fine) but it handles Aeon Nox for me flawlessly.

Synology is a brand that makes NAS systems. They are a bit more expensive than competitor brands (and much more expensive than building one yourself), but they have unrivaled reliability and easy of use.

I use an Android app to run an FTP server on the FireTV so that right now, using a non-NAS setup, I can leave my USB hard drive plugged into the FireTV and be able to transfer over new media wirelessly (rather than unplugging, transferring, replugging, and remounting the drive). This won't be a concern once I have a NAS system setup since everything will be accessing the storage wirelessly (or through an ethernet connection) at that point.

We use roku and apple tv. Amazon also just came out with this which looks quite amazing. I've only missed cable a few times since we got rid of it. We suscribe to netflix, hulu and amazon prime. Between all of those, we don't miss too much.

chromecast requires you to "cast" your media. it's basically google's airplay. Not everything is supported by chromecast, and you will always need a device such as a smartphone or laptop. Based on what I read and my personal experience, your best bet is to go with an Amazon FireTv. You do not need to root(jailbreak) for access to XBMC, so you can stay up to date with their current firmware. Rooting does give you access to use the USB port for storage, and some other goodies. You can find a lot of easy guides at http://www.aftvnews.com/.

For what you will spend on 1 jailbroken ATV2, you can buy a FireTv, apple tv 3, a wireless keyboard/mouse, and flicr that allows you to use a ir remote to control your firetv.

How about putting together a comparison chart like many items on amazon (so you can show the benefits in a chart against competitors). It would work well vs people having to dig into the details. Just a suggestion, like the Amazon FireTV example.

u/cityzenkeys · 1 pointr/thesopranos
u/FumpleThumb · 1 pointr/Roku

Yes! Most people here probably won't agree (in the wrong subreddit lol), but I am looking to make the switch away from my Roku 3.

The Roku 3 was awesome when it came out, but the competition has surpassed it since it's launch. If you are very price sensitive and you can get a Roku 3 for ~$60 then I think it's justifiable. Otherwise hell no!

Here are the alternatives:

  • Chromecast - $35
  • Very compelling price. Much cheaper than a Roku 3
  • BUT it requires another "smart" device to do anything
  • Nexus Player - $99 (Not confirmed)
  • Just launched today!
  • Don't have all the information, but it appears to have a solid SDK for 3rd party development. In comparison, developers don't seem to enjoy working with Roku's SDK. The result is a lonely app ecosystem outside of major (although most important) big providers like Netflix, HBO Go, etc.
  • This is what I will probably switch to
  • Amazon Fire TV - $84
  • Great if you are already in the Amazon ecosystem (have Amazon Prime, a Kindle, etc.)
  • Retails cheaper than Roku 3
  • Apple TV - $99
  • Great if you are already in the Apple ecosystem (have an iPad, use iTunes, etc.). Check out airplay to learn more.
  • Can't use airplay unless your using an Apple device. Pretty exclusive ecosystem.

In my opinion ANY of the above devices are better than the Roku 3. I got mine before the Chromecast launched. Since then the Amazon Fire TV came out and now Google Player has launched. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Roku when I first got it and I think it was a damn good device in its day. But it is clearly in need of a refresh, and I'm not sure Roku is up to the task of competing with the 800lb gorillas that are fighting tooth and nail in this space.

Just for good measure here are some major gripes I have with my Roku 3:

  1. The interface. This thing is on my 50" TV in my living room and the interface is hideous. It's unacceptable.

  2. Lack of cool apps (channels). Roku has been unable to foster a vibrant development community. As a result, I haven't seen more than a handful (and I think that's being generous) of useful channels outside of the big content providers. I consider apps like Netflix and Hulu to be a given when buying a set top box, but where are the apps that come out of left field and wow us? These 3rd party apps nobody sees coming are the result of cultivating a thriving ecosystem of developers who are empowered to create awesome stuff. I am hoping that's what Google's Nexus Player achieves, but if history is any indication Apple will be the first to make that happen. Either way it will be a tech behemoth that has the intense resources required to make it happen.

  3. Lack of "casting". Now I should say that a week or so ago Roku had a blog post about how screen mirroring has been added in an update that is rolling out as we speak. My box has not received that update yet, so I haven't had a chance to give it a try. That being said, this was likely made a priority as soon as the Chromecast launched and started eating into Roku's sales. It took them this long to provide their response to that market pressure. This is what I mean when I'm talking about Roku not being able to compete with the likes of Google and Apple. I don't necessarily blame them for it, but it affects their users.

TL;DR: There is no reason to buy a Roku 3 at this time.

Just right click the Folder in Windows? Do I need to create a network Homegroup? Also, what is the procoess of putting XBMC like? Is there some sort of input on the device that can connect it to a PC?

Also, is this it? http://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-streaming-media-player/dp/B00CX5P8FC/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1415771397&sr=1-2&keywords=fire+tv

FireTV $99 or less. Runs XBMC 13.1 quite well in my limited testing. Getting it set up to replace the Amazon home screen is a bit fiddly, but probably well worth the effort.

u/mtndewforbreakfast · 1 pointr/gadgets

To echo others in the thread, most tablets and laptops will be more expensive than some of the small set-top boxes for digital media, like the Roku 2 XS, Roku 3, Amazon Fire TV, or WDTV. All have their trade-offs, but I know the first 3 at least can connect to a few varieties of media server on a separate computer, such as the very popular Plex, or play local media from an attached USB device. They all sell at $100 USD or less right now.

I have used both the USB and Plex options personally on Roku 2 XS and Amazon FireTV and really enjoyed the experience, though my preference of the two is Plex for a home setup, while USB is fairly convenient if you want to go binge a show at a friend's house.

The Plex client for the device should support more than one server machine, so if you have other members of the household with their own media, they can fire up a Plex server of their own when they want to watch on the set-top box.

I cannot say anything about the WD TV from first hand knowledge, only the Roku series and Amazon Fire TV.

  • Here's some of the specs for developers.

  • A detailed info page with comparison to other devices.

  • List of supported apps (most of it coming soon and not part of the launch) which includes the youtube app.

FireTV doesn't support iTunes and Google Play though. The only one that plays iTunes, Netflix and AmazonPrime is PS3 but has shit UI. The primary drawback for me with these devices is navigation and loading time. Fast functionality and a better interface is their main selling point, so they better deliver. But I'd love to see how it works in real time first rather than deciding from just seeing the ads.
