Its a regular kindle, right? Not a fire tablet? If its just a regular kindle, does the screen light up? If it does, get a case and even a small neoprene sleeve to put it in when you're REALLY not using it, or when you take it out. The lit kindles (and most or all back-lit ereaders) can bleed light when the screen gets scratched. My Nook Glowlight had it really bad, and my Kindle Paperwhite (2013 I believe), has a couple small spots as well. An ereader with no lit display should probably be fine without a case, but I'd still suggest a small neoprene pouch for them.
This is the pouch I use for my Kindle - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8T4J5C/ref=twister_B00DS4G2AW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I also use an Amazon cover that wakes up and puts to sleep my Kindle when I use it.
I use just the amazon basics soft sleeve to store and read with out a case. Keeps it much lighter
