They exist. There is even an AmazonBasics one. I think people who travel a lot (enough to care about one bag travel) don't have a problem with spending a few hundred on the right bag.

But for those who are just getting into this and are not sure using what they have or even buying a "cheap" bag makes sense.

I did a month in Vietnam recently using the €35 AmazonBasics backpack

It went fantastic. Highly recommend. Sturdy as hell, fully featured. It became my go-to travel bag/suitcase.

  • Build quality was great. Hold up perfectly. No wear and tear
  • Overall base weight was pretty high at 1,7 Kg but I never had airlines actually weighing carry on bags.
  • The thing has measurements that fit every carry on requirements I could find. But again, never had an airline measure my check in bag before.
  • Expandable. If you want some extra space (outside of what airlines typically allow) you can expand the bag to increase in size.
  • Folds open like a suitcase
  • laptop sleeve
  • Lockable zipper on main compartment
  • compression straps
  • removable shoulder and hip strap
  • backpack straps can be tucked away
  • 2 strong handles. inner mesh pocket
  • trolley sleeve
  • "middle front" pocket with some basic organisation
  • front pocket for easy access to flight documents
  • Generally comfortable to carry. Straps were padded enough and has some basic back ventilation
  • Light gray internal fabric which makes it visually easier to find things in your bag.
  • No water bottle pockets on the side, something I did miss.

Hand carried my PC build (using the Silverstone Milo ) from Boston to Singapore in this backpack. No issues at TSA and no issues with the airlines either (flew American Airlines from Boston to NYC, Japan Airlines from NYC to Japan and Japan to Singapore). Packed the keyboard, mouse, and 24" AOC Monitor into my check in suitcase.

I'll let you in on a secret, you can get away with a perfectly affordable backpacks under $100 that will meet most of your needs. Above that it is specific features and looks. People can and have travel for months across Europe with just a Jansport backpack. But a nicer more expensive bag is totally worth it for the features it offers, but you should really KNOW what you want. Some features are must have for some people and totally useless deal breakers for others. I didnt know what bag was perfect for me until I had traveled a while and and tested a few bags.

The low end is Amazon basics gets the job done for cheap if you want to test thing out this will work fine, lacks good padded hip belt so if you're sensitive weight its not as good.

One of the most common backpacking bag around, hood basic travel backpack with great quality and track record.

Chase Reeves does a good comparison of various higher end travel bags if you see something you like you can look for more reviews of it, most will be inside your budget.

For traveling, I just bought the Amazon CarryOn and am using it this summer for a two week trip to Spain/Portugal. It had pretty good reviews and I'm excited to be hands free this trip while going through airports and train stations.

For everyday, I just use this small leather crossover bag I bought at Target but have been meaning to upgrade to something larger to accommodate all the crap I schlep around.

Personally I’d recommend something like the Osprey Porter, only $40 over your budget, but comes with Ospreys ironclad lifetime warranty. (Literally no questions asked, could be 15 years old and they will replace it).

But more budget friendly option is something like an Amazon Basics.

I’d strongly recommend shelling out the extra $40 for the Osprey tho

Sounds like a solid plan. You might want more portable luggage if you're doing carry-on only, check out the newer lines from AmazonBasics and their competitors. They are super light and open like a piece of luggage. The one I have has been a life saver as I move around every 3-4 weeks.

Your insurance question will give you a wide range of responses. Check out the previous posts from the last week or two here. If you can get catastrophic-only coverage with a decent deductible, that could be a good option. For things like losing your cell phone, breaking a tooth or even a broken bone - you might be better off just paying out of pocket in Mexico.

Finding your perfect accommodations is the next step. Airbnb is the favorite but look into Facebook groups and book a month+ at a time if that suits you.

Amazon Basics makes a carry on travel knapsack that looks reasonable.

I use the Amazon Basics carryon backpack currently with my Cougar QBX ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J24H2K0/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). For LAN party trips, I am able to fit everything except the monitor in one of these.

I got the one from Amazon Basics (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01J24H2K0)

Did not want to invest a lot upfront because its my first attempt....

Hi Canadian! Are you hoping to buy any/all of these from MEC? I exclusively buy my backpacks from MEC regardless as to what they are because of their incredible return policy.

>We guarantee the quality of our products. If the quality of an item hasn’t met your expectations, you can bring it back. We also guarantee the product selection advice we give. If something you purchased based on this advice turns out to be unsuitable, you can bring it back for an exchange, refund, repair, or credit.

They really stand by the whole "product selection advice" thing. I have friends who work there, and I myself have returned backpacks years after I've purchased it because a zipper has broken, or a strap has broken and it has been replaced, no questions asked. I've returned hiking boots that DID. NOT. WORK. Replaced, no questions asked. Whatever you choose, get the advice from MEC, buy it from MEC, because if it doesn't work out, you can switch it for something different, because it did not work for you. They resell refurbished products with the same guarantee or donate them, so their returns do not go to waste.

I myself was looking at the Vapour Overnight pack. The reason I didn't get it was because I:

  • I worry I would be frustrated by how the inside is treated. Other items in the Vapour line mention that the interior has a "stickyness" to it. I can see a lot of sighs in my future with that bag.

  • didn't like that it didn't have chest or waist straps. Personally, I need them, or at least one of either. I'm 5'8" with crooked shoulders and a back problem.

  • I made and did not return a bad purchase on a recommendation from someone who does not have the same travel needs as me, and I'm feeling incredibly guilty about that purchase to buy something else before I sell it.

The reason I still want to get it is:

  • I would rather get it, find out I hate it and exchange it for something better than to learn it could have been everything I wanted.

  • it looks so very waterproof and that makes me so very happy.

  • I like the compartments a lot. A lot a lot.

  • The price is very right.

  • It's so lightweight.

Should be receiving the Peli and backpack on Tuesday, I'll try it out and report back

Might be worth checking out the AmazonBasics Carry-on. Looks pretty similar to my eBags Weekender but at sub $50, pretty tough to beat if you just need a bag for stateside travel.

Honestly that pack doesn’t look great. No brand and ships from NYC? Smells like a scam / ripoff to me. Check this one out $49:
