As much time as you're spending in that closet, it might be a good idea to get yourself a dog bed to put in there. Think of it as getting crate trained. ;)

Have also used these for crate overnights: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Padded-Pet-Bolster-Bed/dp/B00QHC06UO. The mat part is thin, slightly padded, but the bolsters still make for nice cuddling/pillows.
Both go in the wash regularly and have held up well.
