Not the OP, but it should be easy to find examples.

For instance, I remember an article about a book arguing that religion has pro-social effects. One commentator in /r/atheism quickly dismissed the thesis because "the author is a Christian apologist".

Recently, somebody try to show me that "you have make people believe in an afterlife to get millions of them to lay down their lives". My argument was that politics is often sufficient. He pointed to the example of Jownstown. Obviously, he knew nothing about the incident there, since the influence of religion was hardly relevant, while politics was a major factor.

Just try it yourself: Argue for possible pro-social effects of religion, or against the idea that religion is evil (maybe under a new account), and you'll quickly find that atheists can easily "shrug off and rationalize away" the stuff they don't like to be true.

Now, some anecdotes are hardly convincing, but there's no reason to suspect atheists are immune to confirmation bias and motivated reasoning. Nobody is.

Please read actual scientific work on the societal effects of religion such as this and this before you make such statements.
