I use a DJ light, provides a nice wash.

What I did for my band - and it drastically improved our shows - made them feel more like 'concerts' - is invest in lighting of my own - at the link below you can see plenty of ideas and packages which would be a perfect starter set for a local band - the one I got was linked below and it came with a foot pedal which you could use to manually control the color/fading/on-off/or sound mode

Also got a couple of these 'mega-pars' for the front of stage floor -
you can link them with a DMX cable and they will be in sync https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045EP4WG

There's a lot of ways you can go here. You can get by with the cheap eBay LED lights if you really want, or you can at least go with Chauvet or ADJ LED pars so you've got warranty. Keep in mind you need to get power to all these, and data if you want anything other than static colour.

Or, if you need quick setup times and/or not having any cables to worry about, you could go something like this. Uses an internal battery and D-fi (Chauvet's wireless DMX) to not need any cables. I expect other companies have made similar fixtures, I'm not a shill.

Beyond that you could go for LED bars like this, if that fits with what you tend to be uplighting.

Anyway, my point is you've got a lot of options, the higher price you go you're likely to get far higher reliability and longer lasting, proper warranty, more than just RGB (amber, white, and UV being added), battery and wireless DMX capabilities, so on.

Going with a legit, albeit fairly low end brand like Chauvet, expect to get no more than four no-frills RGB lights for your few hundred $. At that feature-set, expect about $100 per.

PAR DJ lights could possibly be a more affordable solution than grow lights if it's just aesthetics you're going for. I'd recommend using multiple fixtures for a better effect. Here are some suggestions:

I personally use these and I especially like them because they have a built-in black light.

This one looks nice because you can customize the color sequence with a remote.

If you're looking for something that's a little more budget-friendly, this set has some good reviews.

DMXable, can run in auto or program modes, 7 channel light. Nothing too terribly crazy but bars can be used to good effect if you've got an eye for placement.

What kind of mobile dj company, assuming you're hiring one, doesn't bring lights?

For your average size basement, less is more for lighting. I'd recommend setting up the following, to make it all easy and turn-key able:

2 American DJ Mega bars
http://www.amazon.com/American-Supply-Mega-Bar-Remote/dp/B0045EP4WG
These will give a nice wash of color around the room, more so if you space them out. They can be connected master-slave, allowing both lights (or more!) to be the same color at the same time. They also are sound active, allowing them to follow the beat to pre-built shows.

1 (or 2, depending on size) Chauvet Mini Kinta:

these little lights send out a good 100 dancing light beams, again to the music. They can also be sound to light, allowing it to follow the beat.

  1. American Dj Micro 3d Laser http://www.amazon.com/American-Supply-Special-Effects-Lighting/dp/B005MN0262/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1459173823&sr=1-2&keywords=american+dj+laser

this thing will cover your basement, I don't care the size. it'll shoot out red and green dots in an array that covers your space and moves to the music.

  2. American Dj Hazer
    http://www.amazon.com/ADJ-Products-Haze-Generator-American/dp/B0002EOIR0/ref=sr_1_5?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1459173883&sr=1-5&keywords=hazer

A hazer will make these lights pop. Without a hazer, you only see the end result of the light on the wall. The haze lets you see the beams. Don't cheap out and go with a fog machine. haze lasts longer, and doesn't clutter up the air like fog does. It's worth it.

And for real fun, throw in a few http://www.amazon.com/ADJ-Products-ECO-UV-BAR/dp/B00KZHRY9I/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1459173946&sr=1-4&keywords=american+dj+black+light

Cuz who doesn't like black lights?

Source: Mobile Dj for 10 years. This is a bare bones setup of equipment I bring to house parties, exactly. Can all run off 1 15amp circuit as well, due to all being LED.
