Listen, I understand why you're skeptical, but I've read into this. This isn't some conspiracy I made up on my own.

The Dan Ryan is unique. Like I said, building the highway didn't create racial boundaries, it solidified existing ones. There are a number of books that touch on the subject. Namely, American Pharaoh, a super in-depth biography on Daley which details the project.

im probably about to blow your mind, but Richard M Daley was in office for 22 years. His father Richard J Daley (who the book is about) was in office for 21 years. That should give you some sort of idea.

American Pharoah is another good book on him

also, This American Life did a great podcast on Harold Washington, who was one of the few mayors we've elected in recent times who stood up to the machine (although that resulted in a period of racially charged "Council Wars")

While Royko is very readable, it's his columns that really have the meat there. The columns get at the love/hate relationship, the real mixture of pride and disgust. He's also not a historian (for that, see American Pharaoh ). I'd recommend Rakove's We Don't Want Nobody Nobody Sent over it for understanding the Machine in general.

The best Daley biography I have read came out in 2001 called American Pharaoh by Adam Cohen.

This bio does NOT hide the ugly underside of the machine Daley ran. Cohen tries but never finds any sources to confirm Daley's involvement in the riots. No doubt Daley was in the Hamburg Athletic Club. (these clubs were breeding grounds for the machine that would become Chicago politics) Daley was 17 years old at the time of the riots. A ripe age for insane violent behavior but I've read a few Daley bios & none of them have pinned Daley as to taking part in the riots.

There are dozens of good books about urban planning. I suppose to answer your question I would need to know more about what you're specific interest is (or, if you want a broad overview of the field). A good starting place is Planetizen's book list - they have listed Top 10 for planning books (since 2002). They also have the Top 20 overall list, many of which you should be able to find at a library. Also, checking out the ULI publications might be fruitful. They focus more on development and tend to be on the more practical/financial end of the spectrum.

Pound for pound, if you want to learn about urban issues in real life (as opposed to theory), I would recommend American Pharaoh. It's about Richard J. Daily, the mayor of Chicago between 1955 and 1976 . This brings the issues of development, social engineering, and politics all together neatly.
