This is the commonly accepted reading list.

The place to start is Annihilation. (Or digitally. Note that this has Annihilation: Conquest too.)

The comics are NOT like the movies. We don't have a script for the MCU Infinity War so we have no idea which comics it will borrow from. If past MCU movies are any indication, it will borrow from many different series spanning decades.

That said, there is a very popular 90's event(s) called Infinity Gauntlet that was followed up by the Infinity War:

[optional] Infinity Gauntlet/War Prelude:

So I wasn't really into comics at all six months ago. I picked up the Annihilation Omnibus when I saw the GotG trailer and now I am totally hooked. It remains my favorite run to date and I can't recommend it enough.

The Annihilation Omnibus releases in a few weeks. It up for pre-ordering now.

The Annihilation Omnibus would be a great place to start for modern Cosmic Marvel: http://www.amazon.com/Annihilation-Omnibus-Marvel-Comics/dp/0785188894

Somebody posted these in a GotG reading recommendation thread a while back: one and two. They're basically two versions of the same thing.

I haven't read any of this, but I'm probably going to get the Annihilation Omnibus and the Guardians of the Galaxy Complete Collection vol 1 pretty soon. Both collected editions were released this year, so hopefully an Annihilation Conquest Omnibus will be out soon, as well as vol 2 of the GotG Complete Collection.

I would recommend starting with the annihilation story arc.

printed version: http://www.amazon.com/Annihilation-Omnibus-Marvel-Comics/dp/0785188894/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407095502&sr=1-2&keywords=annihilation&dpPl=1

available much cheaper digitally here: https://www.comixology.com/Annihilation/comics-series/814

It doesn't tell the origin of the Guardians exactly, but it is a great intro to marvel cosmic, Starlord features prominently and it leads into the next big event, Annihilation: conquest, which explains the basic formation of the team. That leads into the ongoing series, which is also great.

I would definitely not recommend starting with war of the kings as an earlier poster recommended because it is way lat (like a few years) into the comic series and would be confusing as well as spoil a lot of big events.

No worries, we were all noobs at one point. Annihilation was the start of the Marvel cosmic reboot. This is a reading map for it.

Annihilation is collected in this omnibus. Or you could get the trades or singles, but they're kinda pricey due to being out of print.

edit: changed to a better map

And if you want to see how these Guardians got together in the first place, you have to check out Annihilation. This is one of the best stories in comics. Got over-shadowed by Civil War.

So you could start with the Marvel Now Guardians which is admittedly a good point to jump on with no real prior knowledge. Some people enjoy the Marvel Now version, but people who have read the 2008 Guardians tend to dislike it. It's up to you. For information on the 2008 Guardians, who the Movie was essentially based on, there is this chart. While it doesn't strictly focus on the Guardians through out, it is a introduction to Marvel Cosmic, with lots of cool people in it, like Galactus, Silver Surfer, Ronan (villain from the movie, bit different in the comics), and Nova.

Specifically for the Guardians, while they don't get a comic until the War of Kings series, they are slowly introduced in Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. In Annihilation you meet Star Lord, Drax, and Gamora, and in Annihilation: Conquest, you get Rocket and Groot. In War of kings forward, they do really coalesce as the actual Guardians. So while they're not strictly speaking in Annihilation and :Conquest, it serves as an introduction to them, and thus considered a good place to start.

So as for reading this, you could start with the omnibus which is the full collection of the Annihilation story. Past that things get a bit hard to find cheaply, so another option, particularly if you don't want to spend 80 dollars outright, and don't mind digital, you could go with Marvel unlimited, which is like Netflix for Marvel comics.

You can grab a new one here for less than 80

Got Annihilation Omni too. So excited to finally get it. I found it here:

http://www.amazon.com/Annihilation-Omnibus-Marvel-Comics/dp/0785188894/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1419612689&sr=8-2&keywords=annihilation

The price has definitely gone up recently, but they have new and used available from other vendors for cheaper.

This was recently collected into an omnibus that is EXCELLENT:

Not too many TPBs for the older cosmic stuff, unfortunately, but Marvel's been putting out some collections the last little while.

The Annihilation Omnibus is a bit pricey but a good buy nonetheless. I expect Conquest will be released soon - it heavily features Ultron, so it'd be foolish not to have it out for the release of Age of Ultron. Likewise, the Inhumans are a big deal in War of Kings so I'd expect that to get a release as well.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Complete Collection is a bit cheaper (Volume 2 next month!) but, while it can stand alone, it's really best after reading Annihilation and Conquest. Conquest has a couple of scattered trades around but they're harder to find.

For Thor I would start with the new Marvel Now Thor run, it's a pretty badass version of Thor and is very new reader friendly.

As for Guardians of the Galaxy there are a few places you can start.

Annihilation is a really good series and is the start of the Gaurdians of the Galaxy something I would definitely recommend. However it's not exactly going to be the cast that you might be hoping for because there is no Groot or Rocket Racoon yet. They come during the sequel to this book which is also another amazing story.

There is also the Marvel Now Guardians of the Galaxy which from my understanding is new reader friendly and has the same characters from the movie.

As for Hulk, I'd start with Planet Hulk and go onto World War Hulk.

Amazon Canada might be a good way to do it. Amazon packing though.

Ah, I misunderstood, I thought you wanted a complete list in order. Around 2005, Marvel re-vamped their cosmic line with a series of consecutive major cosmic events. However, none of these had any direct effect on the Marvel line - only tangential. Basically you can use the years to place where each event was published, but don't worry about having to read them in any specific order with the rest of the Marvel Universe or X-Men events. As you may have heard, these events introduced the modern Guardians of the Galaxy which inspired the recent movie.

This is a fine place to start. Though I'd recommend starting at Annihilation for the whole story. But it's only in print as an omnibus right now.
