American Optical Original Pilots are sharp and affordable. I've owned a couple pairs and have been happy with them. They come in different sizes and colors, but I like the gold frames, green/grey lenses, and spatula or bayonet temples. They're available from many online retailers for around $40.
For example:

Brand/Model: American Optical Original Pilot
Price: 40-50
Build Quality: Very High. Superior to Ray Ban etc.
Effectiveness: I have a small face, so regular aviators don't work for me. These are small enough that they don't look ridiculous.
Other thoughts: These sunglasses stand out in a world dominated by Ray Bans. Even better, American Optical has a rich heritage; Original Pilots were the officially issued sunglasses for the Air Force, and astronauts wore them to the moon.

American Optical - Original Pilot
American Optical makes very high-quality glasses, and they're right in your price range. These and Randolph Engineering are some of the best sunglasses on the market, and AO's are way cheaper. If you search through the Amazon listings, you'll find different frame sizes, frame colors, and lens colors.
>I think 54-56mm would be best because I have a large head but I honestly have no clue
So go find out! Get a ruler, stand in front of a mirror, and see what your head measures from temple-to-temple.
> big for my head, I think).
I felt the same way about aviators until I found the American Optical version of these. Like the Randolph, they don't have as much of a "teardrop" on the bottom which really helps them to not cover your whole face. Same basic design but almost $100 cheaper.
Also, these cool dudes wore them. :)
