You do need a prescription, but I've never heard of anyone being denied. I just asked my regular doctor, who I'd never met before, at a physical and he wrote the prescription instantly, knew exactly what I was talking about. That was years ago, never had to go back in.

So, it's sort of complicated, but like I said, Finasteride is the name of the drug itself, Propecia is the name brand most people know it as (like how Advil is actually the drug Ibuprofen). Finsateride was originally invented as a drug to reduce prostate size in men with enlarged prostates, I believe, and when they started using it they noticed all these old guys were regrowing hair, so they resold the same drug as a hair pill.

Propecia is really expensive, at least $1200 a year, possibly more. Propecia is a pill that is a 1mg dose of Finasteride. However, you can get prescribed the generic version of just plain Finasteride in a higher 5mg per pill dose, that is supposed to be for prostates. Then you use a pill cutter (I got this one on Amazon for $4) to cut the pills into 1/4th. So then it is a 1.25mg dose (my doctor said the 0.25mg extra is not important enough to care about).

I live in California, and with no insurance mine costs $9 for 30 pills. Cut each pill into 4 doses. That's 120 days for $9, and 3 bottles will get you through a whole year. So $27 a year. Same exact drug, you do just a tiny bit of work (cutting the pills is honestly kind of satisfying to me) and it's 7 cents a pill instead of $3 or 4 per pill.

Note that the pill doesn't work for everyone. I know people who had a great regrowth of their hair, and some who it didn't work at all for. But it works for most I think. For me, it just froze my hairloss right were it was, but no significant regrowth. I was going bald fast at 25, so this was a godsend. I just wish I'd gotten on it sooner.

Most people suggest you do it in conjunction with Rogiane and a Ketoconazole shampoo. Those two plus Fin are called The Big Three. For more info check out /r/tressless, which is a sub just about hairloss.

Modalert is easy enough to break up by hand, even into quarters. With Waklert, you'll probably need something like this, even to halve it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EGKTGK/

Here you go, no longer a pain to cut into quarters!. I've been using a pill cutter for a decade.

no definitely not confusing. I used to take medication and it was the same for me. Lack of appetite and felt like compete shit after and a little bit during as well. like i felt off during. but i say get a lower dose and try using caffeine it’s a natural stimulant that may or may not help. You’ll probably need a lot. like. a lot. but could work definitely has helped w me and if it makes you tired don’t be surprised it’s kinda weird w adhd my ex’s dad told me how it’s the opposite in the brain bc ADHD ppl take meds to calm them down where as if other ppl take them it’ll do nothing or hype em up. If others drink coffee they get jittery and we chill tf out. but in summary that dosage is very high and could be too strong. if you wanna make the most of it I say get a pill splitter like this one https://www.amazon.com/Apex-Ultra-Pill-Cutter-Retracting/dp/B000EGKTGK and take 20 mg in the morning and 20 at lunch or something. and tell guardian how you think it’s too strong. best of luck.

As far as splitting concerta goes, I'd call your pharmacist and ask. Then, if the pharmacist says no, you have it from his mouth, and not strangers on the internet, and you can go back to your psych with that.

About cutting pills in general, they make pill cutters that you can use to cut pills in half.

Way too fast. Typically it's not a good idea to alternate the dosage when withdrawing from an SSRI as it puts your brain/body in a yoyo state of withdrawal. However, since everyone is different - the only way to know if alternating works is to try it yourself:

Before you start - get a pill cutter: https://www.amazon.com/Apex-Ultra-Pill-Cutter-Retracting/dp/B000EGKTGK .

  1. Once you have a pill cutter and assuming you have 10mg dosage size - Alternate 10mg / 5mg [cut 10mg in half] for a week, then take 5mg for at least 3 weeks and continue to take it until you feel mostly OK for at least an additional week [minimum time to take 5mg is 4 weeks].
  2. If you feel mostly ok, alternate 5mg/2.5mg [cut 5mg in half] and take it for a week, then take 2.5mg for at least 3 weeks and continue to take it until you feel mostly OK for at least 1 additional week.
  3. If you feel mostly ok, alternate 2.5mg/0mg for a week then stop. This is when the discontinuation side effects kick in and typically last 4-8 weeks. If at anytime the side effects are too brutal [keep you bed ridden], then only way to resolve side effects are to reinstate 2.5mg for ~3 weeks and then alternate 2.5/1.25 for a week, then take 1.25mg for at least 3 more weeks, then stop.

The preferred method of tapering off:

  4. Drop down to 7.5mg and take it for at least 4 weeks.
  5. If you feel mostly ok after 4 weeks, dropped down to 5mg and take it for 4 weeks.
  6. If you feel mostly ok after 4 weeks, drop down to 2.5mg and take it for 4 weeks.
  7. if you feel mostly ok after 5 weeks, stop.
  8. If at anytime the side effects are too brutal, reinstate 2.5mg, take it for ~2 weeks, and reduce smaller amount 1.25mg for at least 4 weeks.
  9. Then try stopping.

I'm in a similar situation, I'm taking a dose of 15mg, my doctor forgot renewing my 5mg prescription so I have to split the 10mgs for a while.

there is something called a "pill cutter", I think it could be worth checking your local pharmacy if they sell one, otherwise you can split the pills with a sharp knife (which is what I will be doing for the next couple days).

if my geometry skills arent completely garbage, try cutting along the line of the the letter "T" on the pill (I made this image)

I tried cutting exactly between the letters "T" and "L", and the left part came out as bigger.

If it's big enough, you should be able to do fourths (with a pill splitter) and get a good dose. These are a god-send.
