Is there a particular reason why you want a canister filter? If I was setting up a 55 gallon tank I would get a hang on back Aqueon filter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DDS5DS4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500600519&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=aquarium%2Bfilter&psc=1&th=1). I use this brand for all of my aquaria and love it. It would be plenty good for redclaws.
Buy an Aqueon QuietFlow. It's about $25 or so and it circulates A TON of water for the price. I use 100 micron Coralife filter pads (get about 30 pads for $11 and the pads are washable).
Cut open your filter cartridge for the 40i and empty out the carbon. Stick the filter fiber into the Aqueon.
