The common conception that the war was inevitable is wrong. Every year that passes following the failed assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand results in more interconnectivity and reduced desire to go to war. By 1917 Russia would become powerful enough that Germany wouldn't risk a war with them. Even before 1914 the populations of the involved countries were growing increasingly anti-war, and in 1915 it was planned (prior to the war) to have a European conference in the Hague or something to try and resolve disputes through negotiation, not war.
