> It somehow came out of the cpu socket even though the cpu latch on the mobo was down

Welcome to the world of PGA CPUs, it's been that way for close to 20 years. For future reference, you want to do something to heat the CPU up before you remove the heatsink and, when you do, gently wiggle the heatsink back and forth (don't violently twist it, just wiggle) before you pull it up.

If you used the thermal paste that came with the cooler you don't have to worry about getting every speck out of there; NT-H1 is non-conductive as most thermal paste is. If the pins themselves are clean and the paste is only on the substrate (the green PCB), it may work without being cleaned. If there is any on the pins, you can try removing it with a soft brush (I've seen these be recommended before) that's been dipped in high purity Isopropyl (91% or so). You can also use toothpicks or really any small instrument that won't scratch the CPU or bend the pens as the paste should just flake off. There's also thermal paste remover, it's not recommended often as you can usually accomplish the same thing with some IPA* and a bit of elbow grease, but for situations where you have to be a bit more delicate (like this), its usefulness climbs up.

It's pretty easy to reapply the thermal paste, I have the day one model PS4 too. After a bit of research I went with this paste, I also bought this to remove the old paste and clean the surface. I also got these thermal pads to replace the existing ones (on what I think is the RAM?). A bit of compressed air helps clear the dust from the fans. It did make a noticeable difference to the noise whilst running games. I have noticed that it recently has started to creep up again, around 12 months after reapplying the paste. I do keep my PS4 in a cupboard (with the back removed) which won't help.

I would get this Arctic Silver ArctiClean Thermal Material Remover & Surface Purifier 60ml Kit https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BKP306/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sDq4DbN5ZQ61V

Stuff works great, lasts pretty much forever and you dont need much to clean a cpu/gpu lid.

Then just some lint free cloth or kitchen towel. Dissolves ceramic and carbon based thermal paste easily and smells like citric vodka, never tasted though.

To be honest, I stopped using Afterburner. I was noticing weird power and heating issues. Now I just use the Adrenalin in-game menu (Alt-R) to change Wattman settings and other things if I want to. And the in-game overlay to monitor temp and FPS (Ctrl+Shift+O) Generally I haven't even been overclocking anything. Just using Chill. IT makes a "boopy-beep" noise when it is enabled. If you use Chill...make sure to disable vsync. I had the same issue as you with certain games when using Afterburner and messing about with some overclocking and power tweaks, so it might be worth uninstalling it, and doing a full clean of your AMD drivers with DDU then get the latest version. I've lerned that Afterburner doesn;t really work well alongside Wattman on the Adrenalin drivers.

Make sure you are using Vulkan as the API in game, and try lowering the resolution scale to 90% also. This will look blurry, but it might tell you if your GPU is just being pushed too much to handle things.

I also use a program called AIDA 64 which has a desktop gadget which gives me on screen display of all my temps, fan speeds, CPU/GPU speed, memory use etc. This can be displayed on my second screen. The AMD overlay works just as well for the GPU at least. Note: the FPS counter only seems to display when in fullscreen mode.

So in summary.... try getting rid of Afterburner and reinstall your AMD drivers. Keep Ambient Occlusion off. Consider re-pasting your GPU. Its probably out of warranty by now anyway and it really helps.

The H100i comes with thermal-paste pre-applied as per the picture here

If you want to use a higher quality thermal paste like Arctic Silver for better heat conductivity then you will need to remove the pre-applied thermal paste with some cleaner like this

You can do this pretty easily and I did it with my Kraken X60 and saw a few degrees of temperature difference, so worth it in my mind, but it's up to you.

Could always try this, used it on my last upgrade and works fantastic.

I've always just used this to clean off the paste.

But rubbing alcohol is a very common item. Tesco will have it.

> isopropyl alcoholo is really hard to buy in the UK and cant be bought from pharmacy without prescription

Huh, weird.

Maybe it's worth paying the price for this stuff: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Silver-ArctiClean-Material-Purifier/dp/B000BKP306

No idea about that tape head cleaner, it might or might not have other stuff in it.
