List:

Bookbag - It always changes brands but this is the layout. It held up for over a year of High school abuse for what it's worth. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S6LWPS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_U8IDDbA3M3JDJ )

Anker Portable Charger - Yes it has a lot of stickers. It doesn't have USB Type C, but it lasts me well over a week for casual charges on the headphones and some friends' phones. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JIWQPMW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IbJDDbA3Z070Z )

Breath Mints - Because speeches and girlfriends are a thing. (To clarify I have one girlfriend and multiple speeches)

Calculator - AP Calc is a jerk, but this helps. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00001N2QU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ocJDDb5R4KNS5 )

Laptop Behind Things - This was provided by my school for certain classes, and it's not too bad for the price. The charge lasts well over a day. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBGVB7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6cJDDbBPSRRYF )

Charging cord - This is fairly new to me, but works just as you'd imagine. It allows quick charging which is a plus. I also recommend Chafon charging multicables. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V8G85DY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_seJDDb9Z4CY8F )

Red Cards - If I need to write a note to a friend, these come in handy and are more useful than Field Notes (come at me bois) for my daily use. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AMO8A0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ffJDDbZFZZXEJ )

Fancy Cards - Honestly, any Theory 11 deck is fancy, good for magic which I like, and convenient for playing a normal card game with friends. I switch this out with other cards pretty regularly, but I always carry a full deck. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JMNSXRB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SfJDDbC1EHH8Q )

Wireless Earbuds - They are dated so they aren't the best anymore, but they are still kicking. They connect to my phone and laptop whenever necessary. There are alternatives but they aren't bad for the price IMO. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07582VVJR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vgJDDb83TT6MF )

"Flippy Knife" - Ever since I bought this, I haven't been able to set it down for more than a day. It's all plastic, and I only use it in classes where the teachers don't mind. (Side note to anybody who has one of these; twist rubber bands up and place them in the handles near the end to make it quieter and slightly heavier) ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CRMRJ2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4gJDDbPXHPXRF )

Not Listed - A calculus textbook, some folders, notebooks, pens, a spare FSP Bullet cartridge, pencils, a jacket in the bottom because weather, and a scrunched up gym bag in case a friend's bag breaks or I need more room than my bag allows.

I don't use my locker so I rely pretty heavily on this stuff. It's not for everyone, but hey. If anybody has any questions on the gear or any suggestions, feel free to comment. Thanks for taking the time to check out my post!

Seconding this. And I don't know why OC is getting downvoted. Unless OP is on the hook and needs his $1500 computer to get paid I don't see why one needs a computer. Ditch the laptop and enjoy yourself for the week.

I'm assuming since you're carrying around a film camera you won't be editing photos or video. If you can't stand not having a full keyboard then I suggest you do the sensible thing and use a chromebook -- at $200 you won't miss it if it gets snagged at the hostel or rained on or crushed.

u/Schadenfreude11 · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Well assuming the budget is around $1500 (based on the GL502's price), you could build something like this (I set some aside for peripherals) and get something like this for school. This desktop would provide better performance in games than the GL502 (Here's the GL502's 970M compared to the 1060 in the build), while the Chromebook would be lightweight and have a long battery life for school. If school requires any heavy programs, you could access your desktop remotely and run them on that.

u/Michiganders · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Two cheaper chromebooks I would suggest are the Lenovo Ideapad 14 for $186, and the Asus Chromebook for $197. Both of these would be very light with a good battery life (both under 3lbs and around 10 hours battery) with nearly identical specs. The main difference would be that the Lenovo is 14" while the Asus is 11.6". With a chromebook a lot of your storage will be online which some people find more convenient.
In the end it'll come down to what you think looks better/value screen size.

For $220 this Asus Chromebook is a 2-1 if that interests you.

u/AOCPS · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd recommend the Acer E5 for $550. It is a solid and well built computer.

u/bgiesing · 3 pointsr/chromeos

Well you could get the direct successor, the Chromebook 3 (currently $189) https://smile.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Other options could be:

u/Orangematz · 3 pointsr/laptops

Chromebook is a good option as long as you're cool with Chrome OS and you know the differences.

Something such as this would do fine.

u/WeebyMcWeebFace · 2 pointsr/linux4noobs

Looks like it has decent specs for what you wanna do. But you could also get away with a new (ish) Chromebook for <200, like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DBGVB7K/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496214893&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=chromebook&dpPl=1&dpID=31inMpRxCFL&ref=plSrch

Edit: that Thinkpad actually has a better process than the one I found. Bad example 😁

But my point is, take a look at some other Chromebooks too. Most of them are pretty cheap, especially if you can find a good deal for a used one.

u/sniper344 · 2 pointsr/Laptop

Hi been a while not from the US but happy thanksgiving :-), so I strongly suggest the you take a look at these. If its just work your dealing with and they are deals so get one before the deal goes.

The Dell G3 Gaming is my recommendation for a decent gaming laptop for about $800. In my personal experience Dell makes some quality laptops. I personally have an Inspiron 7577. It’s been treating me well so far. I only use it when I travel for work and want to game in my hotel room. The specs and build quality are top notch for the price. If you can squeeze an extra $200 into your budget I’d recommend going with the 7577 over the G3. The CPU is one gen older (pretty much irrelevant in gaming) but you get a PCIE m.2 drive and an upgrade in GPU. Well worth it in my opinion.

Alternatively, if you want to go the route of having a dedicated gaming desktop and a laptop for notes/taking to class; go with this build and a chromebook like this.

u/WordsfromtheWoods · 2 pointsr/writing

An example might help :)

Here's an Asus c202:

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K

It was intentionally built for the education (EDU) market. That's to say it was designed to be used (and abused) in a classroom setting. It's robust (rubber bumpers, chassis designed to take a pounding, survive a drop from desk height).

Here's something similar from Dell:

https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/dell-chromebook-5190

All the big Chromebook players make a variation of a rugged EDU laptop. (Lenovo, Acer etc)

You get the idea. Cheap, rugged Chromebooks for use in a classroom setting that can take a pounding :)

u/taerz · 2 pointsr/travel

Chromebooks! You can get a ruggedized Chromebook for sub 300 (CAD). It will do all the basic functions of a laptop, is extremely secure, and isn't so much that damage or losing it would be a problem. You'll need internet access for some things, but this shouldn't be a problem in most places.

This is a good example

u/Cereaza · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Chromebook or a cheap Win10 tablet/2in1.

Things to look for are expansive memory. If you're gonna be downloading movies or decent sized games, being able to put in a 128GB microSD card or a 256GB in a few years is very important.

Then usability and decent performance as far as CPU. Don't get a $50 tablet because it's gonna suck cock and not work well now, and definitely won't work well in 6 months.

I'd say, if you're ok with a laptop, go Chromebook (is basically a super netbook) and many chromebooks are going to be able to use the Android Play store soon so... basically a super android as well.

If you like tablets, get a cheap 2in1 ($200 is a low price range with a lot of choice and competition). You get the best of both worlds (imo), can use windows so if you WANT to use software built for a PC, you can. And make sure you get at least 2GB of ram. Many have 4GB which is obviously better, but no less than 2.

Some win10 tablets/2in1s I like.

Insignia Flex

RCA Cambio

Microsoft Surface. There are a lot of Microsoft Surface systems. Old refurbished (this one) is cheap. The new best ones are $1000. There are middle ones around $500-600. People love these machines for good reason, but make sure it works in your price range.

Acer Chromebook

Asus Chromebook

Ton of options beyond these, but these are sort of... In the Vein of what I'm recommending.

u/DrLuciferZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Asus Chromebook

Decent starting point.

What you want to seek in this category is as much RAM as you can get for multitasking.
And remembering that Chromebooks run/will run(with updates) Android Apps.

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> but I'm not sure if there's something else out there that might be cheaper/different

I would go with a Chromebook in this case. There are some new Windows laptops in this price range, but they come with only 2 GB of RAM. They will struggle if you have a handful of tabs open.

As for Chromebook suggestions:

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

You can get it for $160 from the Amazon Warehouse or $199 if you want a new unit.

u/jcoe0723 · 2 pointsr/chromeos

An Acer CB R11 might be what you're looking for.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-11-6-Inch-CB5-132T-C1LK/dp/B01J42JPJG/

11.6" IPS screen...Not 1080p, but at that size 768p should be good enough. It's touch screen and convertible...Don't know if that's something you want or not. It's on sale for $259 right now.

If you don't want a touchscreen/convertible...Here's something that's under your budget:

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

Still 11.6" and IPS (I believe), and enough for what you want.

u/Pineoranges · 2 pointsr/chromeos

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K

I haven't personally used this device, but I've heard great things about its durability and keyboard. It's $199 USD so if you went up $50 on your budget you could get two.

u/knddkkefi · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

What uses are you aiming for? If it's just light use like web browsing, you're probably best looking at some chromebook laptops.

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K is solid, but doesn't have a whole lot of local storage. It does, however, come with 100 GB of Google Drive storage.

u/Gobias_Industries · 2 pointsr/chromeos

I gotta suggest the one I have, the Asus C202. Great keyboard/touchpad and a rugged design (drop and water resistant) all for 200 bucks. If there's a downside it's that the screen isn't the greatest, but otherwise I'm extremely happy I got one.

Actually, looks like it's 194 right now on Amazon

u/payne · 1 pointr/chromeos

I love my https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBGVB7K because the keyboard is great (but not backlit) and it runs Termux.com well. I've had it since July 2017.

u/jul2040 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

At my school they make us pay $500 for this. On top of that they don't let us enable dev mode so no crouton or any of the cool stuff you see people do with chromebooks.

u/subadanus · 1 pointr/ipad

the note-taking experience with the pencil on an ipad is amazing compared to anything the chromebook could offer, i got very sick of the way google thinks a laptop should be quickly

> $100ish
> but I want to go further

Dude you are spending thousands on college, I'm pretty sure you can spend more than a mere $100 for a laptop to use.

u/Kocrachon · 1 pointr/chromeos

All of my repos combined are less than a gig, so I am not overly worried about space.

This is the one I am looking at.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

I was gonna add a 64 gig SD card to it for extra space.

u/sarah_sometimes · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If she is just planning on using the laptop for school and work, I would suggest perhaps going with a chromebook and then buying a SD card of your choosing for a little more storage. https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1494386305&sr=1-3&keywords=chromebook

u/alpacarama · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

An ASUS (a brand known for REALLY good build quality), $193: https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

A Samsung, $189: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW

Another ASUS, $194: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VUV0MG0/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B01N5P6TJW

Only the last one can run android apps, as that's still not very common in chromebooks.

u/drmcclassy · 1 pointr/laptops

$200 is extremely cheap for a laptop, and you almost guaranteed will not be happy with the result. I'd recommend to try and get to $500 range at least if possible.

If $200 is the budget though, I'd recommend a Chromebook like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBGVB7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_KZPxzb6XXNGY3

u/Blacknessess · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Get a chromebook such as this one and then spend the rest on a nice pc, You can remote desktop into your pc at home from the chromebook if you need to

u/fire_down_below12 · 1 pointr/chromeos

UPDATE: I ended up going with the Asus Chromebook C202SA. It is on its way.

Link

I’m not a huge fan of the rugganized look, but the reviews were good and the price was right.

This sub is so helpful and I really thank everyone for their detailed insight and knowledge. I will post back after a week of using it with my thoughts.

u/morkbjork · 1 pointr/laptops

honestly you're not going to get much unless its from 2013 or a chromebook, i recommend the latter. it runs google docs natively and pandora of course works with it. there's a couple options like this asus that's water resistant on the keyboard on top of being hardy as well. with the new update that's come out you can use android apps too.

u/ctarbet · 1 pointr/k12sysadmin

I tried to remove a key once and Dwayne Johnson popped out of the USB port and smacked me. Then he carefully repaired the key and jumped back into the motherboard. Also, they smell like cinnamon.

I just ordered the ASUS C202SA for $200.38 before tax by looking at the Amazon Warehouse deals. Seems to have the same innards as the new C300SA, but is 11.6" as opposed to 13". I spent a week debating between the two and opted for the smaller one because I've got a one year old daughter who will very likely try to destroy the computer by tugging the screen down. The 202SA is designed to handle moderately rougher handling by students.

Should arrive on Thursday. I'll let you know if I still feel good about it after unboxing.
