Have you considered testing or building yourself a Gentoo Linux install? Protip use systemd for familiarity and similarity to ubuntu benefits.

You have fairly new hardware with an 8th gen intel cpu and a 120Hz 15.6 display which could clearly benefit from nvidia's binary drivers having been configured correctly.

Personally having used Gentoo for 16 years this similar scenario can be common for "generic precompiled or preconfigured" distros to face additional challenges on certain hardware devices.

If you could run a 5.3 Linux kernel on Gentoo that may help significantly with driver support that ubuntu may not support for another year and allow you to build the install config specific to that laptop.

Custom driver coding can be accomplished but kernel drivers for devices also often require userland software supporting or recognizing those custom kernel drivers which can add to the challenge as well as your faced with then maintaining that custom software on a distro designed to resist being customized as a result of being precompiled.

I'm always keen to help someone learn Gentoo and occasionally have been known to remotely assist interested and willing users with install builds.

Ubuntu and similar precompiled distros are great but they can all have usability limitations due to overabundance of generic device and software features having been supported.

/u/Kothnaaken experienced this complication that Gentoo was able to accommodate when i offered to aid him with installing gentoo on an "obsolete" HP server that no distro's livecd installer would work on.

For additional consideration this thread from /r/linuxquestions last week offers an abundance of perspective.

Added bonus here being you already have a running Linux install on that laptop and gentoo installs can be prebuilt in a chroot directory for any other or the currently in use hardware device then upon completion repackaged into a gzip tar file using a bash script then backed up on a usb stick or other pc after which you boot from a livecd then progress with reformatting the desired install disk then configure the unpackaged files to boot that pc or laptop.

Often using a more flexible and moldable Linux distro can yield more satisfactory results.

Sounds like you can get a GTX1050Ti, although Linux does run better on AMD chips. If you have your mind set on running Linux in the future, I can only say to get a Lenovo ThinkPad as those run Linux exceptionally well, I have the ThinkPad E585 in mind, but if you want to stick to Windows and get some excellent gaming performance, go for one of these:

  • Asus VivoBook Pro
  • Dell Inspiron
  • Asus GL503GE

Just note that the ThinkPad isn't as great on Windows because Ryzen Mobile has some driver issues that only seem to affect Windows, so the ThinkPad really is a great option for Linux users, but less for Windows users at this price point.
