That portable console device is only 720p. The above is 1080p. Not to mention it has an i7 cpu, an SSD (so load times are a fraction of that of the console), a battery so you don't always need to plug it in and a vastly superior display. And like I said much lighter and easier to transport.

That took me 60 seconds to find. Given more time I have no doubt you could find an even better deal.

I would say go for the Asus K501UX or wait for the Asus K501UW to come back in stock. The only serious difference here is the SSD size.

Both are 4.4 lbs, have 15.6" IPS displays, up to 8 hours of battery life with regular use, and Nvidia GTX 950M dedicated graphics. You could replace the SSD easily enough if you chose to as well and put something bigger in there. This is plenty of performance for your gaming and video editing. I wouldn't worry about getting a full TDP processor unless you knew you were going to work on really long and complicated projects, and then you would need to sacrifice your weight requirement or add more to your budget.

I bought this a couple months ago as a travel laptop. Its the best value laptop i have come across, it can be had for $650 if you are willing to buy a "used" on from amazon(i learned that the used ones just have some packaging damage and aren't really used). The touch pad isn't great, and the screen is so-so but every thing else is top notch.

This dell was my second choice, also a great computer, has a better processer then the asus. I went with the asus because I was able to get it for $650 and people always speak bad about dell, looking back I think I would have preferred the dell.

u/heretodiscuss · 3 pointsr/australia

Consider this one instead (you'll have the same problem with shipping).

i7 instead of i5, only has a GTX 950M rather than a 960, but even according to the NVIDIA site you'll get the same maximum clock speeds (check out the specs section). Long story short, more bang for your buck, plus, call me a fan-boy all you want, but ASUS>Dell.

Either way, unless you're heavily on the move, just build your own PC, you'll get WAY more for your money.

u/hexane360 · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

I got that. Great laptop and plays year old games well. The i7 is not as good though, not to mention the graphics.

There's also this now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0146DD02G/

u/VicRattlehead58 · 3 pointsr/wow

I think it should be good. I've had this Asus for 3.5 years and still play wow on it.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0146DD02G/
And the MX250 does outperform the 950M
https://technical.city/en/video/GeForce-GTX-950M-vs-GeForce-MX250

now, it also depends on what exactly you mean by playing wow. I don't raid or do competitive pvp on it. But for questing, low level bgs, playing the auction house, solo old raids for mounts, etc. it is perfectly fine.
I still play overwatch on it on lowest settings, but it does occasionally feel like it lags a little. It did ok for fortnight too but havent played that in quite a while.
For mine at least, and maybe it's partly battery age, but I pretty much use it as a portable desktop. I have it plugged in, external monitor mouse & keyboard. It struggles hard when not plugged in.

If it is to be your primary comp and you intend to raid or competitive pvp, you should definitely try to get a better opinion.

Hope this is helpful :)

u/OddLawnGnome · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

As the guy who is allergic to traditional hard drives, I prefer the variant of the Dell i7559 with a pure SSD. You lose storage space, but exponentially increase the responsiveness of the laptop. Both versions are a little heavier at 8 pounds though.

If weight is a serious concern, there is this Asus at 4.4 pounds, however you sacrifice quite a bit. Dual core instead of quad core CPU, and a GTX950M versus a GTX960M. Here's a quick breakdown of the difference, which is significant.

If you can deal with the extra weight, the performance and overall useful lifespan (how long you will want to actually keep the laptop) on the Dell make it a much better deal.

u/SaneBRZ · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> Any reason to avoid this particular laptop?

Yeah, it's way overpriced.

The AMD A8 APU is quite weak. You can find it typically in laptops for around $300. And it doesn't have a dedicated GPU. It will struggle, even with older games like Skyrim. There are far better choices out there.

u/AdityaRav · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think Asus K501ux might be your best choice in canada unless you can import something across the border from usa.

It costs 1179$ CAD and has latest skylake i7-u processor and comes with GTX 950m graphics, 8gb/256gb SSD and good battery life(5-6hrs general usage). It has a good build and a slim and sleek look. You can swap in a HDD if you like for about 20-30$.

It is enough to handle your games but not at the your frame rates. It will be able to run overwatch/LOL at 35-45 fps on medium and upto 60fps on low.

ASUS K501UX 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop, 6th gen i7 and a GTX950m. $749

Lenovo Y50, 4th gen i7 with a GTX 860m. $900

Another Y50 variation. 4th gen i7 and a GTX 960m. $1019

Lenovo Y70, choose between i5 or i7 4th gen variations. GTX 860m. $1129. Difference form the other 2 is the bigger screen

These are the ones from my bookmarks on my phone browser. I couldn't suggest more (sorry) since I'm outside and phone internet life is hard. Anyway, as /u/Eckophix suggested, go to /r/SuggestALaptop. Bought this for my wife and its been great for the past year. plays gta v great with no issues (thats just the most graphical intensive game its played, so nothing else to compare it to). overall good PC. i would recommend doing a clean OS install though, comes with some bloatware. good luck!

u/Blue_Faced · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

That seems pretty high for a pc with a dual core. And there's something off with the specs. It says there's a 16GB SSD, but I suspect they mean 16GB RAM but it says 8GB RAM, so something is off. It likely either doesn't have a 16 GB SSD, no SSD at all, or a bigger SSD and no TB HDD.

Edit: did some research. This model usually has a 256 GB SSD and no TB HDD https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0146DD02G

u/CincinnatiCobra · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I have found a couple of interesting options and am hoping someone is able to provide a bit of feedback on them.

The ASUS K501UX has what sounds like a solid build and from the benchmarks I found, it appears as the 950M can handle even the most recent game releases on medium settings. Some of the cons that I have read include an uncomfortable touchpad (something I may not use frequently) and some units shipping with a bad CMOS battery.

Alternatively, there is the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK. It is currently $70 more than the ASUS, but it has a slightly superior CPU and GPU. The build quality is mentioned as being lesser (fully plastic), but I do like the overall appearance. Reviews are similar, though slightly more negative, and I am hesitant to go with a Dell after reading more about the certificate issue and general difficulty with their bloatware.

This Dell XPS 13 9343 is also intriguing since I like the minimal bezel and the fact that the Signature Editions from the Microsoft Store come free of any added software. Unfortunately, it was $100 off as part of yesterday's deal on the site and I was clearly not ready to commit to a purchase before it ended.

Lastly, I found this ASUS GL551JW-WH71 though it comes with a 1 TB rather than an SSD which I would greatly prefer. It only comes with one HDD slot, so I would have to upgrade rather than add an additional drive. If accessing the drive bay is easy this would add less than $80 to the cost.

There is also the SAGER NP5652 with similar specs as the above ASUS but I am unfamiliar with the brand, though it appears to be recommended here.

Any additional input would be greatly appreciated!

u/stnam1994 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The most optimal setup for your case would be to have all your music/pictures on an external drive, and all your games and your Windows OS on an internal SSD drive. Especially if you don't need to access your music/pictures frequently, it should noticeably speed up your games and boot time.

That being said, here are some of my recommendations:

I'm working on the same thing right now, in the same price range. My strategy is to get the most powerful processor I can, as well as much RAM as I can afford. Right now I'm looking at:

Have this laptop and can confirm that it works very well. Takes maybe 1-3 minutes to load game, and then the same to load a save. Use the best graphics possible with 1-2 mods and 1 family with no store content. Have Generations, Uni Life, Late Night, High End Loft Stuff, Seasons, Ambitions and use all of them.

I don't know which of us is the exception but I have no issues and play in Bridgeport and Sunset Valley.

This is slightly over $700 but it looks like a macbook in design and has an actual quad core (as opposed to 2 cores hyperthreaded) Skylake i5 with a 950m.

13 inch isn't really that possible but 15 is.

u/techneeeq · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you can go with a slightly bigger screen, then the ASUS K501UX 15-inch Gaming Laptop would be an excellent choice....If it weren't for the screen size and the weight of the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK 15.6" Full-HD Gaming would be for the same price and a more powerful laptop ( it has a better graphics card).

u/Abdullah719 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Specs wise, the ASUS K501UX is the best by far. It's a popular option for budget conscious gamers. You can check the reviews here to get an idea, though this one has slightly different specs. This one on Amazon has a better processor and a larger SSD (but no HDD).

Since you are neither doing very intense video editing nor gaming, then this ASUS K501UX 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop would be perfect for you. It has a nice processor, 8 GB RAM which will be fine for you , as well as a great 256 GB SSD which will bring much needed speed to this machine.... It also has a nice GTX 950 dedicated graphics card - powerful enough to run those games you mentioned above on decent settings.... It also has a decent quality build with solid keyboard, nice touch pad and of course , nice finishing... It's price should also be ideal for you.

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Ok so if you need a decent laptop for school purposes, especially since you are going to be doing some amount of CAD as well as a bit of gaming, an i5 or better processor would be great, at least an 8gb ram, an ssd would be a big plus as well and a good battery life.

i would recommend this decent asus laptop. it come with a powerful intel Core i7 cpu, and a decent 8gb ram which will be great for CAD, a nice 256GB SSD for fast programme launches and booting speed, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M gpu. it just 4.4 pounds and it has a good battery life as well.

This Asus laptop might be up your alley. Little less than your budget which is good.

u/cadtek · 1 pointr/computers

Well, you first need to look for a laptop that has dedicated graphics, at least 8GB RAM and either i5 or i7 CPU.

Also, a laptop made for gaming isn't worth it in college, especially if you'll carry it places - too bulky, heavy and usually only a 17" screen.

The laptop I have can run Minecraft just fine, over 60fps, it can also run most of the games in my Steam library. I ran Mortal Kombat X and it maxed out the CPU but it ran.

You can get one for under $1000. Here are a couple suggestions:

ASUS K501UX

u/LethalCS · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you don't need the 4K resolution and 16 GB of RAM, you could get the this specific K501UX-AH71 with 1080p and 8 GB of RAM, which still has the other specs of the 4K one from the looks of it. You'd save $170! If you need to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB, you can. The resolution clearly can't so in my opinion it all depends on if you really need/want 4K. Both are good computers, and you can't really go wrong with ASUS computers, especially in this price range.

I was actually referring to the $800 Dell gaming laptop from the parent comment, with the battery life. The XPS 13 that you're referring to should actually be good for about 10 hours, if not longer.

For some reason I thought you were actually referring to a different Acer, too (http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Acer-Aspire-V-13-V3-372T-5051-Signature-Edition-Laptop/productID.328881700) . It's in on stock on Amazon, albeit a little pricier. Seems like a pretty great value for what seems to be almost an ultrabook. This one is lacking a backlit keyboard, but it's also more compact and has an SSD.

I'd also recommend this Asus (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0146DD02G/ref=s9_acss_bw_cg_147ECL_4a1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-top-3&pf_rd_r=1AHEHQ2YXQ80E2KZ50QN&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=2333201242&pf_rd_i=11392907011) which is a little more expensive than the Acers but is capable of playing more than casual games while being somewhat thinner/lighter and cheaper than the Dell gaming laptop.

P.S. Those 10 free games are nice, but IIRC only a few are really worth anything.

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/reviews/B0146DD02G/ref=cm_cr_dp_aw_see_rcnt?ie=UTF8&s=sd (the i5 version should fit within your budget, but I'm not familiar with Canadian webshops).

The asus k501 lx (comes with i5 or processor) or ux might fit your needs. It's an 15.6 inch laptop that only weight 2 kg and is very thin. It has a nvidia 950m video that can handle up to light/medium gaming. Mine currently lasts for about 6 hours during light usage on medium low brightness. It also fits your budget.

The build quality feels really good. The strong plastic body is covered with a thin aluminum plate and the backplate is aluminum.

The ssd helps with making it boot in under 10 seconds and it is very fast in general.

It does have a few downsides:

The screen is a decent tn screen, so vertical viewing angles and contrast aren't great compared to an ips screen. It is still good enough, especially with the hardware and weight at the price it us at.

The keyboard hotkey and multitouch touchpad drivers are broken by windows 10 and need to be manually reinstalled (but work fine after doing that). You also need to disable windows 10 dpi scaling since it makes text blurry.

The fans run for a few seconds when you launch a program. It is very quiet during light use beside that and it doesn't generate much heat, even under load.

So, if you think the screen is good enough, it is a really nice portable 15.6 inch laptop with powerfull hardware and good battery life.

Looks great, that's the kind of recommendation I was looking for. Thanks! But can you give me your opinion on this Dell laptop? It has a better GPU, and otherwise, it's not that far off from the Sager one. It's also $100 cheaper, so right now I don't see anything that's worth the extra $100 for the Sager, even though it does look cool. What do you think?

EDIT: $735 here! Seems to be a dealbreaker for me.

EDIT2: Checkout page is broken, never mind..

EDIT3: Last one, promise. What do you think of this? Good GPU and CPU and all that, but cheaper and lighter. Which of the 3 laptops is most cost-efficient?

u/throwaway_the_fourth · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Hey /u/blowjobburglar, try this $779 laptop or this one for $699. They both have 15" screens and i7s and are around the cost of what you linked, but they have good screens and dedicated GPUs. The one for $699 has a fairly poor hard drive, but so did both of the ones you linked. The more expensive one uses a lightning-fast SSD for speedy data access.

Edit: I trust /u/PonkyBreaksYourPC and strongly recommend this one with a solid state drive.

u/ruybropez · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I have one and it's quite good besides the bloat issues I mentioned. I was looking at this before I saw the dell, and even though I certainly trust ASUS more in the build quality/not installing dumb shit on your computer category, it's hard to argue with the specs increase for another 30 dollars. ASUS has a pretty similar offering in terms of hardware, but it's a bit more expensive, no 4GB RAM version on the 960m (probably barely matters, but, y'know), and it doesn't have an IPS screen; something I kind of wanted.

I haven't tested the gaming performance much, but I was getting above 50fps in MGSV for reference. It's no 970m but once you get into that category and beyond you're looking at at least a grand, and just the keyboard section of the laptop will be as thick as the inspiron is closed. Not to mention heat or noise. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, as someone who was looking for middle of the line gaming laptop and not a 1200 dollar desktop replacement.

u/ndralcasid · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah thanks!

Actually I do have two other Asus laptops I'd love your input for comparison.

First is this. Is the processor a significantly better, or would I basically be paying more for backlight and touchscreen?

Second is this. It seems more geared towards gaming, but the specs are nice. Not sure if the processor is significantly better enough to sacrifice what it seems like twice the bulk and half the battery life. I do think the prospect of potentially playing some higher end games seems nice though.

The first has a 960m, second is a bit cheaper and a 950m (still about as fast as a 860m I beleive), the last is my preferred amount of portability.

I received an Asus laptop as a gift. The screen broke after a week.

Then we got this from Amazon but it had CMOS battery problem. Got a replacement but that one had the same issue. BIOS was not remembering the time after each reboot. It was causing some secure websites not to work. I should have read the reviews before buying.

u/threewordsnospaces · 1 pointr/Laptop

I was looking at that one earlier today. Would this one be any better?

Just browsing quickly I found this which has the same graphics as the laptop I use and it runs fine on high graphics. Not sure if that's what you're looking for though.

anything over 8 lbs I think would start to get excessive. I found this: http://www.amazon.com/K501UX-15-inch-Gaming-Processor-Windows/dp/B0146DD02G/ and it matches a lot of my requirements. The only thing I wish is if they had a similar priced version with an 1TB HDD instead of the 256gb SSD. Not that I don't want an SSD but carrying around an external harddrive for all of my samples is less than ideal.

u/Mocha_Bean · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

>I personally don't care if my laptop weighs more because i just need to take from point a to b in a bag. Somebody might think that weight is a key factor.

Then there's no point in even arguing about it. If you don't need the Macbook's portability and build quality, then you don't buy a Macbook.

>All of these are 500 to 700 with similar specs.

It's 4.4 lbs and 0.85 in. thick. It's not lighter, although it is fairly light.

You have not proven anything, other than that portability costs more. And, since Macbooks are portable, they thus cost more. You haven't yet convinced anyone that they're overpriced.

u/xXGuyOnCrackXx · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yeah portability is a key factor but it's not the end of the world. I personally don't care if my laptop weighs more because i just need to take from point a to b in a bag. Somebody might think that weight is a key factor.
Also we are talking about a jump from a i5 to an i7 which is a huge jump plus a dedicated graphics card. The built-in Intel graphics is okay for basic needs but it's nowhere close to a dedicated graphics card.

It's an ASUS K501UX. Had it for about a year now and I've been able to play all the games I wanted to fine(except forza horizon 3 but that game had issues). It all depends on what games you want to play.

If SSD is not a concern I would get the first one $999 - $25 with promo VCOBX16 if you use VISA. Free shipping if you sign up for Primier trial. It still has a 128 SSD which imo is important as your boot drive, and gives you room to install applications on, + 1TB HDD to collect your porn on.

It's only a tiny bit more expensive than the one you linked, but much much better. (Newest generation cpu, way better graphics card, better screen resolution etc.)

As far as brands go, you can't go wrong with an asus or a lenovo. I build most of my own computers but if I need a laptop I go with either of those two. Make sure the computer has at least 8 gb of ram, a 900 series gpu, and at minimum an i5 processor. At that price range you could also probably find one with a solid state drive as well and that would greatly improve quality of life. (it wouldn't really help running the game faster or better, but it will definitely improve load times and the computer booting/loading faster.

I actually bought this laptop as a gift for my wife a few weeks ago, I installed wow on it and it ran great on medium settings with 100+fps. You could probably run on max if you wanted to, I just tried to keep it lightweight to save battery life.

http://www.amazon.com/K501UX-15-inch-Gaming-Processor-Windows/dp/B0146DD02G/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1458920626&sr=1-1&keywords=asus&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289793011%7C2289792011%2Cp_89%3AAsus%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A7817224011%2Cp_n_feature_twelve_browse-bin%3A9521908011

^^ this one has the 6th generation i7, 900 series gpu, and a sizable solid state drive for 800$ even.

u/TehWildMan_ · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

Mainly because numbers alone don't tell the whole story.

With CPUs, clock speed has been of lesser importance. Newer generations of processors can process more instructions per cycle at a greater energy efficiency.

For consumer laptops, above 6-8gb is largely wasting money, so capacity is rarely above that range. Some speed improvements have been made

Hard drive capacity may appear to have gone down, as Solid state drivers are vastly more expensive per GB, but due to their speed and power consumption, have nearly replaced hard drives in mainstream laptops.

here is a random $800 laptop on amazon, which is clearly above where laptops where 4+ years ago.

u/ExtraSmooth · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Okay, so out of curiosity, how does this Dell stack up compared with this ASUS, which doesn't have a disc drive, and this one, which does? As far as I can tell, they're both equal or better at a lower price, but I imagine I'm missing part of the picture.

u/Audience · 1 pointr/nyu

Howdy!

I am a sophomore in the game design major, specifically David (also to some chortle!). First of all, welcome to the BFA! I had a similar predicament when I was approaching my freshman year last year and so hopefully I can help you out.

Second of all, I just want to let you know a few things as a person who worries about money and making the best purchases!!!

NOTICE: If you are not taking programming for games first semester, you can get away with not having a laptop for a semester. Ultimately, would not recommend, but it gives you a unique look on the world and your personal use of technology! I spent many a nights late at Bobst because of this!

You probably want a laptop that weights 5 pounds or less, but also one that is relatively thin.

My first purchase with my financial aid money was a chunky little sager that was a beast of a machine. There's a certain luxury to being able to carry around your laptop with one hand. I think that is the plus of all the people using Macs, but I certainly cannot afford that. It was too chunky and too small for my tastes and leads me to my next tip.

You probably do not want a gaming laptop. Well... a ~super powerful gaming laptop~.

Depending on your habits, you might be spending a lot of your time freshman year not playing games (you will find out this is a good thing!) or just playing games for games 101 (history of games basically). There is also a game library in both Manhattan and Brooklyn which both have gaming PCs as well as a bunch of consoles. If you do fancy yourself a lot of games and think you'll be playing a lot in your room, I'd totally recommend just building a desktop along with getting a laptop. I'm still using a $600 build I made in middle school which plays games fine on a 1440x900 screen.

Lastly, you should get what you're most comfortable using OS wise and you probably want to get it before the year starts.

I grew up using PCs because my parents couldn't afford macs and just being comfortable using your computer is probably the most important part. A lot of the professors use macs, but a large percentage of the BFA student body has PCs because a lot of games are made for Windows and I guess they wanted super gaming laptops?

This is what I bought.

I can firmly say that you do not need anything more powerful than this graphically or processor wise. Feel free to get something beefier or more expensive. That's up to you, but this runs everything fine for me (as well as my buddy Simon, ayy shout out to Simon!). Only thing I miss is having 16GB of RAM, but I am soon upgrading the 8GB to 12GB which should be a bit better (8GB was completely fine). You know yourself much better than I do so if you need more storage space, look for something with more!

Don't worry about your computer not lasting either? As long as you get a good warranty you should be fine. A lot of the development that you will be doing computer wise will not be as graphically intensive as the games that come out!

Good luck and feel free to PM me! (please do !!! us first years are itching to meet the new crop :^)

OS X is definitely the worst platform for gaming right now. Windows is the default, and Linux has been maturing very quickly. Meanwhile, on the OS X side of things, OpenGL 4.1 (circa 2011) is the latest graphics API supported, with Vulkan nowhere in sight and Metal not being relevant for just about anything. OS X is also way behind on graphics driver updates a lot of the time, because Apple simply doesn't care about those.

Edit: also, the best graphics card you can currently get on a MacBook is an R9 M370X, which is based on an old architecture and is slower than a GTX 950M, a graphics card you can get in a $800 budget multimedia laptop.

Alright, there seems to be an issue for me with Newegg, but here's a link to help you get started, keep in mind an i7 'HQ' processor is much more powerful than an i7 'U' processor. With that accounted for, I can vouch for the Dell i7-559, it's one of the best in the price range, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports and the RAM is upgradable.

EDIT: Here's a cheaper option, albeit without dedicated graphics, and a slower (but still i7) processor. Here's the same thing with dedicated graphics (could be useful even if you aren't gaming)
Here's some other decent options: 1, 2, 3

I disagree heavily here. Not all gaming laptops are "huge and hot and heavy." Saying that ultrabooks are strictly better is not very accurate. How many ultrabooks are there with dedicated GPUs that don't cost an arm and a leg? Take this laptop for example. It is not massive by any means and it is not "angsty" looking. If you are looking for a portable device with more power than many ultrabooks at a fraction of the cost, there are options out there.
