I use an Asus Zenbook UX305FA which is a bit more than $500, but runs totally silent with a Core M processor and has an SSD unlike most machines at this price. It runs Ububtu great, I currently triple boot it with Fedora, Ubuntu and Win10.

For about the same price, their new model has a Core i5, USB C and a fingerprint reader: UX330

Asus zenbook is your best choice, it has amazing battery and really good performance, SSD, 8gb ram, i5 7th gen. It's on sale right now, definitley worth a look. https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-UX330UA-AH54-i5-7200U-Windows-13-3-Inch/dp/B01M18UZF5/

Take a look at the Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH54. Aluminium chassis, new Kaby Lake CPU, enough RAM, SSD, fingerprint reader, USB-C. Everything you need for under $700.

u/DistinguishedTrout · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'm thinking that the XPS 13 would be perfect for you. Great build quality, great battery life, and it's the right size. The HD 620 iGPU in the lower tier models should be able to give you close to 60FPS on Medium settings according to NotebookCheck.. Here's a video of the someone testing Sims 4 on medium on the exact specs and it's running great at medium.

If I were you, I'd go for the i5-7200U version, but the i3-7100U would be fine. You may also consider upgrading the 128GB SSD to 256 for 100$ more on Dell's website. That would put you anywhere between $791 for the i3 and 128GB SSD to $1089 for the i5 and 256 SSD.

The XPS 13 really is top of the line in its class though, and that is reflected in its price. There are budget options that can take care of your duties for cheaper.

  • Acer Spin 5 - 13 inches, same specs, $589, but has touch screen

  • Asus Zenbook UX 330UA - Same shit, except no touch screen, slightly better build, and $699.

The XPS is nicer, but it's not inherently better. I'd be tempted by the Acer and Asus if I'm being honest. Same specs and can be had for cheaper.

/u/The---Technician is the expert here, but I found a couple laptops you might be interested in. Here is an Acer 14 inches and here is an Asus one that is very light and portable but it's $700. You can always get an SD card and have it in the laptop at all times for more storage.

Again, these might not be the best at this price point or they might be. /u/The---Technician knows more than I so maybe he can suggest a better one.

I would go with the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54 13.3-inch Ultra-Slim Laptop its really light 2.6lbs,the incredibly Powerful with Intel Core i5 2.5GHz 7200U Processor and 8GB DDR3 Memory gives a wonderful performing laptop with 256 GB SSD which gives it boost in opening up programmes.

u/The---Technician · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54 would be a very nice selection. It is very light weighted, has a full aluminum case, a nice battery life an of course , it is a decent performer with a solid 7th generation i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and a fast 256 GB SSD.. I must also mention that it has a very nice 1920 x 1080 display and it's sleek appealing aesthetics PUT IT ABOVE OTHERS.

u/Michiganders · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

My best suggestion would be the new ASUS Zenbook UX330 for $760. It's a newer version of the UX303 that you linked with updated hardware. It includes a new Kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of DDR4 RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It also has a full 1080p IPS display, an all aluminum build and casing, a backlit keyboard, and a long battery life. It's also much lighter at 2.6 pounds, making it extremely portable.

u/jackarooh · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I am a CS major (US) and also looking into a new laptop. I have found two that I like and aren't expensive. If price is not a major factor for you, I'd go with the Dell XPS line, or the Inspiron 7000 series. Notice: these are the US links, so I don't know about availability for Canada.

I prefer a little cheaper (~500-700 USD), so I've found an Asus Zenbook, 13.3" Ultrabook, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. Or something more upgradable and larger, the Asus F556UA. It's a 15.6", with a CD/DVD drive, can add an extra 8GB of RAM for up to 16gb.

Everyone says to go for the SSDs in laptops, but I don't mind a bit slower HDD, but probably because I've never had a laptop w/ an SSD.

Edit: Did notice /u/toppleganger's comment, and if you only need Linux, a Chromebook would suffice, otherwise you can dual boot Windows & Linux.

u/WheresMyOh · 3 pointsr/laptops

I'm actually looking at the Asus 330UA myself. All my research points towards the XPS being a bit better in screen/display, performance, and battery life. However, it is more expensive and a think a bit bigger/heavier.

Let me know anything you decide on, I'm having trouble with the decisions myself haha.

Edit: looks like your version has an updated QHD+ screen type, which I believe does drain battery faster. This is the one I was going to get with just the FDH screen and excellent battery life:

For what you need there is no need to spend all of your budget the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54 can do all you need it to and last a very long time

  • Display: 13.3-inch Ultra-Slim Laptop 1920 x 1080
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-7200u
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3
  • Storage: 256GB SSD
  • Weight: 2.65 lbs
  • Battery Life: 11 hrs +

The aluminum body and weight makes this laptop ultra portable which makes it ideal for students. This system is not meant for running intensive programs or playing AAA games, it is meant to have a good build quality that can last 4+ years to see you through college. A game such as League of Legends can run pretty well on this system without lag as well so no need to worry about that
u/LonerIM2 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I can't think of a laptop that's under 3 pounds and will run those games nice but I think your best option would be the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA because it comes with everything you need i5-7200U , 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD screen which is a must have for this price range and it's 2.6 lbs.

Wouldn't the Zenbook UX330 be better for $20 more than the UX305? And how does the Acer Swift 3 compare to the Acer Spin 5? Besides the Spin 5 having touch, the specs look the same, but the Swift 3 looks nicer to me (and I don't have a need for touch). And how does the Acer Aspire S 13 hold up to the Swift 3? Again, specs are the same (if comparing the non-touch version).

I guess I'm trying to see if you think any of those choices gives better value than the Swift 3 @ $525.

Hi, these are the best models I found based on your requirements:noteb search result

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

I would recommend the: Asus ZenBook UX330UA (2017) with an LED IPS Matte display for better viewing angles.
Another option would be the: Lenovo Ideapad 710S (2017), it is similar to the ZenBook, just that the display has better colour reproduction for Photoshop, though it will need calibration.

Both of them come with good specs, build quality and battery life.

You can buy the Asus from HERE.

You can buy the Lenovo from HERE.

Most PC laptop companies have the poor habit of offering superfluous upgrades over already-good CPU/RAM/etc. specs, while at the same time upholding very poor standards for "base" screens. It's a significant issue in the market but it can be avoided if you know what to look for, and will hopefully be lessened overall as more buyers become aware of the issue.

This ASUS UX330UA has a very solid display in addition to those models you're looking at. Perhaps better than the one in the XPS 13 FHD model, except the bezels aren't as slim. The contrast is almost as high, and the sRGB coverage is around 93% instead of 77%. https://www.amazon.com/UX330UA-AH54-13-3-inch-Ultra-Slim-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B01M18UZF5/

This is the UX330UA FHD model. The UX330UA QHD+ model uses a PenTile (RG/BW) not-true-3200x1800 display like this, regarded deceptive marketing. Its contrast and sRGB aren't as good as the FHD Zenbook either. This is as opposed to the XPS 13's true 3200x1800 display in its QHD+ model.

Yoga 720 and 910 are good too, however I'd skip the Yoga 900 refurb deals in case you were to see those, since it's also a PenTile display with an incomplete matrix as well as mediocre contrast and saturation.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you've got a PC at home to do heavy tasks and gaming, I'd stick with something such as this.

I would avoid both of those options because they seem to have TN panels. (See sidebar for more info)

u/LittleTinGod · 2 pointsr/laptops

I just got a UX330A a week ago, I love it so far, the battery is insanely good and its extremely quiet, only heard the fan once during the Windows Anniversary edition update. https://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX330UA-AH54-13-3-inch-Full-HD-Fingerprint/dp/B01M18UZF5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482611827&sr=8-1&keywords=ux330+7200u

u/Rutgerss · 2 pointsr/rutgers

Nothing specific, but there are definitely good and bad suggestions. Do not get a Chromebook, for example.

You definitely want something with an SSD and a decent display (1080p IPS display), battery life, and CPU (i5 or i7). Backlit keyboards are also nice. I personally don't care about touch screens, and prefer laptops without them, but that's completely subjective.

You won't need anything super powerful just for CS. You pretty much only need a very powerful computer if you plan to play a lot of games or do serious rendering (so 3D modeling, video editing, etc.).

For $707, this Dell laptop is a very good option. It is powerful enough to not be useless after a few years, has a backlit keyboard and a solid display, a 256 gig SSD, a 2.3 GHz quad-core i5 processor, and 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM. It can even be used for moderate gaming. The biggest drawbacks are its weight, and for you, the price.

This Acer is also pretty good, and it costs a little less, but I don't think it has backlit keys, and it has a worse display (TN instead of IPS, meaning it will have worse colors). It actually has a better CPU, though.

For $700, this ASUS is a solid choice. It is lighter and smaller, has a good display, backlit keyboard, and it even has a fingerprint reader.

You should also look at Lenovo's ThinkPads. They're very customizable and you can open them up and upgrade them in a few years if you want. The good ones cost more, though.

u/cesarmac · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

That seems very expensive but then again I can't be sure since I don't know the prices of your country. That same model was selling in American stores for cheaper. I can provide a link to a an Asus Ultrabook with the same hardware for $699.99 US dollars, maybe you can use if for as a reference.

Check out the asus zenbook series. I had the same budget as you and went through XPS, surface pros, Spectres but settled on asus. An i5 7200 cpu with 8gb can run rocket league and csgo at 60fps. It cost me around $700 I believe. Only downfall ive found is that the ram is not upgradeable (atleast on the model I linked)

Something like this should be fine for what you're looking for. Solid build quality, good keyboard, and will be able to play civ 6 on low settings with playable framerates

u/by_a_pyre_light · 2 pointsr/laptops

Are you definitely wanting the DVD drive?

If not, you can get a much better laptop in the ASUS Zenbook line for around the same price. You'd swap 16GB of RAM for 8GB of RAM, but you'd upgrade to a 1080p IPS display from that crappy 1366x768 TN panel on the HP, you'd shave about 66% of the weight off, get a much better build quality and sexier design, and longer battery life.

And the RAM thing is a non issue - with the specs of these laptops, you're not going to be doing anything so intensive that you'd run through 8GB of RAM.

If you're definitely wanting to keep the DVD drive, same CPU and RAM, then that will probably be one of the better prices. I am not as familiar with that market because it's fairly flooded by a lot of similar products and there aren't too many requests for laptops with optical drives these days.

u/Hntr · 2 pointsr/UofT

For the CPU you don't need an i7. The only distinct difference is that i5s don't usually have hyperthreading, but that's okay because most applications never use hyperthreading. Unless you do a lot of video editing, but I wouldn't recommend a laptop or even a sub $1100 solely to edit videos.

As for 7 hours of battery life, that'll be hard to find in general. Companies advertise x hours of battery life but that's with unrealistic scenarios like brightness at low, not connected to internet, with only video playback.

All in all I'd suggest something like this or similar: https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-UX330UA-AH54-i5-7200U-Windows-13-3-Inch/dp/B01M18UZF5/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483381950&sr=1-2&th=1

Hey there - so I got the HP Envy and for some reason it was overheating very much - the area above where the processor sits was very hot to touch so I figured I may have got a defective unit. The WiFi was also less than stellar. And the fan noise was extremely loud in the unit I received but that may have been due to the overheating at rest. In doing some more research I came across the Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 which is on sale for $679. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M18UZF5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The specs of this Zenbook model are comparable to the Envy (i5, HD screen, 12 hour battery life, backlit keyboard, lightweight). How would you say it compares in your opinion? Any insight into that?

u/TacticalBastard · 1 pointr/laptops

I want you to read this before choosing.

Now that's that out of the way, if you don't want to spend money you could easily stick to the MBP, and I wouldn't go to Windows. Developing on MacOS and Linux is so much easier than Windows.

However if you do want a new computer. I would look at something like this if the light and portable is really your thing.

  • Intel Core i5-7200U
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • 1.3cm thin / 10hrs battery life

It's an excellent small and portable laptop with a very good build quality : aluminum chassis. It packs decent performance and has the best Wifi adapter you can have in a laptop (802.11a/c WiFi) and lasts over 10hrs of battery life.

If I had to choose between the two, I would personally go for the Lenovo. Not only is the Thinkpad equally as powerful if not more powerful than the Dell, it is cheaper and comes with an SSD. However, like Astec said, the Thinkpad seems somewhat expensive for what it actually offers. Furthermore, since you are not going to be gaming on your laptop, I would consider getting a lower powered, cheaper alternative. Laptops with less powerful hardware tend to have an extended battery life. Considering your circumstances, you should be looking for a laptop with a decently powerful graphics card and processor and a high-end storage system. A laptop that you should consider buying is the ASUS ZenBook UX330UA-AH54. Not only does it have a SSD, it also has a powerful core i5 and 8gb of memory which makes it ideal for multitasking.

Per previous suggestions, would you say the [Asus Zen Book] (https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-UX330UA-AH54-i5-7200U-Windows-13-3-Inch/dp/B01M18UZF5/ref=sr_1_1?m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1482451877&sr=1-1&keywords=ASUS+ZenBook+UX305FA) fits the bill? Not too expensive (for an Ultrabook, it's quite cheap) and has good reviews.

u/malvinvnv · 1 pointr/laptops

I see. I really apologize for my writing earlier, as it wasn't responded yet there's another thread that looked similar. I assumed it was the same person (Perhaps it is, perhaps it's not). The M-series should do you well, but it will leave you wanting a bit. I was worried at first that this is going to be the main machine (In that case, you might get frustrated once you got big code or a long equation going on there. It might take ages to process)

Anyway, if you're in the US, there's a lot of good options out there such as this Asus and this Dell

Now, the Dell has a touch screen but it lacks in terms of build quality (It's very plasticky). The Asus has the premium look and build due to its metal construction. It's also reflected in its pricing.

If you're okay with no touchscreen, then I would strongly recommend going with the Asus, actually. The ZenBook lineup (the model I linked to) has much better build quality. Can't say it's Mac-like, but it's reaching that levels.

Anyway, this Asus should have a touchscreen but I am not sure about the legitimacy of this link. You might want to recheck it with your local retailer too.

If you're ok with non-M series CPU, this one is going to be much more powerful. It's not as heavy as you might think too, but it might be a bit shorter in terms of battery life as the CPU draws 2x more power.

Recent Asus laptops tend to work well with Linux and the Asus UX330 is a good option for long battery life. It's not going to be gaming-capable, however.

u/ajaxanon · 1 pointr/tablets

I think you might find it cumbersome navigating note taking on a tablet and then porting over the notes to a macbook. Alternatives worth considering:

  • get a printer: this one is very reliable, able to print wirelessly, and the ink drums last a long time.
  • get a chromebook
  • get a small laptop 1, 2, 3

  • Get a Surface Pro 4 and do everything on it instead of your mac.

Hey, do you think this X1 will get any more stocked at this price point? Seems like a really good deal.

Otherwise I'm looking at this thinkpad 13 and the ZenBook UX330 /u/shopineer suggested. Have anything to weigh in on with either of those? My university has loaner laptops I can use for the time being but I'd like to buy one before next week when classes start really ramping up. Thanks again! Ya'll have been super helpful.

Why on earth are you comparing a 13.3 inch MBP to a 15.6 inch Asus?

I mean yeah both of those match the MBP in terms of specs, but they're bigger, bulkier and heavier. The MBP is around 3 lbs, while both of the devices you linked are at least 5 lbs. That's a big difference for something you're carrying around daily. Something like a Zenbook would be a much better comparison.

u/HealzFault · 1 pointr/gadgets

Looking at buying this laptop (although I was hoping spend $600 or less). I'm starting grad school and also starting to learn to code as a hobby. I'd like a thin 13.3" notebook and this one seems to be my best bet. My requirements are: Thin, 13.3", 8g RAM, at least 256 SSD and either an i5 or i7 processor. If anyone has any less expensive options please let me know!

I don't know where you live but if you want slim and productivity, you won't find anything new for 300$. I would strongly suggest getting more money and buying an Asus with SSD, which seems to be the best bang for the buck if you want something slim. https://www.amazon.com/UX330UA-AH54-13-3-inch-Ultra-Slim-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B01M18UZF5/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1496241342&sr=1-6&keywords=asus+laptop

I run Fedora 25 on all of my non-server stuff.

Have a T440s, but the batteries I have are dying and new OEM ones are pricy.

I'm currently looking at an Asus ZenBook (not sure which screen yet) or the Galago Pro. The 8GB of RAM in the ZenBook sucks, so that may be out, but still looking through their lineup.

u/DZCreeper · 1 pointr/overclocking

It will automatically boost the clock speed as the thermals, power availability, and number of cores in use allows.

Also, you said you paid $600-700 from Fry's. Was this a recent purchase? I can assure you that it is worth nowhere near that much. Below are just two examples of far better options should the option of returning your laptop still be available.

Thank you for the list! I think there are, as of now, 4 options that I'm considering, and I need to go through reviews, etc. to figure out which one to go with. They all seem to have differing pros/cons (which include price differences), making it very hard to choose. If you have any specific recommendations/thoughts, that would be very helpful!

These are listed roughly in order of preference (as of now):

u/laptoppyadvicey2 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thank you very much. You seem to know a great deal. I hope you don't mind one final question.

I believe that I've narrowed it down to the Acer VX 15 that you listed, the ASUS UX330 Zenbook, and a ThinkPad E570.

The Acer seems to have all of the power qualities that I want and maxes out what I can/should get for what I'm paying, which is most important to me.

The ThinkPad has the following specs "as pulled from the site" for $908.10:

Processor : Intel Core i7-7500U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz)

and, the comments and a quick reddit search tell me, "business" laptops are overall better and longer lasting than others?

The Asus UX330UA is slim and seems to have good specs too. https://www.amazon.com/UX330UA-AH54-13-3-inch-Ultra-Slim-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B01M18UZF5.

I understand that it largely comes down to my preferences on the power-slim/sleekness-quality scale at this point, but what would you recommend from the three of these? Is there one that's objectively better than the others relative to the specs and price points or is there something they should have given their price/what I want that one of them doesn't have? I should be able to afford a new laptop in another 5 years so I wouldn't need what I buy to last longer than that, but I do want to maximize my purchase value here. Thank you in advance!

u/DonDi94 · 1 pointr/laptops

Really? I've read mainly fairly good reviews, around 4 stars/80-85% positive mark for the Acer Swift, and looking that the overall specs it would be quite appropriate for what you're looking for. As an example I was reading this review HERE as it gave a quite in-dept analisys of the laptop technical wise. Careful that this is the Intel HD graphics version, not the other one.

Personally I'd suggest to give priority to battery life and SSD, as they'll be the things that will matter the most on the choice of this kind of laptops. As processor, over i5 both 6th gen (6xxxU) or 7th gen (7xxxU) will do just fine, and 8GB of ram are enough, this is exactly what I'm searching for.

Keep in mind that I'm not discarding the one you suggested as if you don't mind too much about the lower battery life it's still a great laptop for the price, but I'm pointing out laptops that might compete with that that trade some things for others. For example, the Acer Swift has less storage but has better life, which might be more interesting as I personally had no issues with 256GB on my ultrabook, while the long lasting battery was way more useful to go through days with lots of lectures.

In fact, I'd also say that this asus HERE might be even better for you, as it has a larger battery than most of this laptops (57Wh instead of the more common 45Wh), which combined with a last gen i5 7200U and a full HD panel will garant you an excellent battery life. It also can have up to 512GB of SSD and it has at least 8GB of ram. The price is not as low, but it's a fair trade in my opinion. This 256GB version is 700$ (I'm supposing you're american from your link) which might be enough for you.

Sadly at that price range that I'm guessing you're looking for you won't get exceptional machines, so some compromises have to be taken. I can assure that as even at the high end point that I'm looking for right now there's compromises everywhere >.>

To give a reason for the SSD in case you're not aware, it's just a big USB stick as I've said, meaning that it's way way faster than an old hard disk (the classic ones that you've might have seen if you have a desktop pc). Those are mechanical, meaning that there's literally a disk rotating inside and a sensor reading the data. That means that it will be way slower, as the sensor needs to move in place and wait for the hard disk rotation for reading, while the SSD will just have elecrical pars for it. Besides this small technical explaination, what's the difference? If the operative system is installed into a HDD, the computer will take around 40s or more to boot, while an SSD will take around 7-10 seconds. This is the same with normal applications. Another thing is that if the HDD, for some bad luck, recieves a bad hit from a fall or similar, the sensor might get displaced and the hard disk is broken at that point. The SSD on the other hand won't have a problem with that just like any usb stick. So in other words, the SSD will always be the best upgrade you can have in any laptop.

That doesn't mean that it's bad to have an HDD as a secondary storage, but I believe that a SSD as main storage is mandatory.

https://www.amazon.com/UX330UA-AH54-13-3-inch-Ultra-Slim-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B01M18UZF5

As far as what you're looking for
While this isn't an explicit gaming laptop, I'm sure it run some low level games while still being a functional computer for other uses (Papers, videos, general use, etc.) As for vidya games I wouldn't rely on it, it can easily play games like Civ, EUIV, etc.

It's also a pretty lightweight, sturdy laptop. Weighing in at 2.6 pounds, with aluminum hardware so it's reliably sturdy (but I still wouldn't expect this thing to take on a baseball bat and win.

Note: I haven't purchased a laptop yet myself, so I'm also looking for some other suggestions, but this Asus is my current favorite.

I need a new laptop for my internship since I'm falling behind and want to use this weekend to catch up. I'm looking to buy an Asus Zenbook that would hopefully be shipped before the weekend. The amount I am asking for includes the estimated tax. I'm getting some income in a week from a sidegig that I do. I estimate that I will get ~$1000 on Saturday, which I will use to repay back the loan. In case I don't have enough money to pay back within one week, my actual internship pays a $2040 stipend per month. I started this week, so if I have to use the stipend to repay, further repayment will be one month from now.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say a zenbook

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M18UZF5?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It lacks a dedicated gpu which may hinder solidworks performance a little but I'm not sure. Will handle everything else just fine.

It's pricey because it's thin and light so if you're willing to go heavier then you can get better specs for the same price

Throw the model number into google and click sellers websites. Since I could only look up what you gave me I'm assuming that this is the product in question. Right off the bat after about 2 minutes of reading a couple reviews there's another user who had an issue with the track pad as well.

*Edit: There's more than one user on just Amazon's site who has had this problem and there's also a recurring issue revolving around the screen of this model having dead pixels. I'd recommend you look for a different laptop or you'll be playing the lottery hoping that yours won't have any flaws. Make sure to read multiple good and bad reviews from people who purchased/own the product to see how common an issue may be occurring and whether or not it's a deal breaker for you.

How would you rate the ASUS zenbook then compared to your choice? I think I still want quality because I feel that if i go into the 1.2k+ range, I might as well just get a gaming laptop/xps 13/hp spectre based on what I have read. How is the Acer Swift 3? I do know that it may be excessive, but I want the laptop to last for awhile especially since it won't be under heavy load or pushing it to the limits with gaming.

u/Agent_03 · 1 pointr/laptops

Let me give you three better alternatives:

  • Refurbished XPS 13 9360 from dell outlet store -- i5-7200U, 8 GB RAM, FHD screen, 256 GB SSD - $830 at the moment (if you get the right one).
  • New XPS 13 9360 with i5, 8GB RAM with 128 GB SSD, then when you need it, buy an extra 128 GB SD card for $40-50, or an external hard drive for $100
  • Asus UX330UA for $730 on Amazon - i5-7200U, 256 GB SSD, FHD screen

    Personally I'm liking option 1.

Edit: Macbook air is generally inferior in specs to those other ones, and lacks hardware acceleration of HEVC-encoded video (so, worse battery life with updated stream content). Also the i5-7200U in the above machines will wreck the two-generation-older i5-5250U that the Air has, something like 20-30% faster and generally more energy efficient.
