Here you go

It's an ambidexterous design, so no issues with left handed use, and it's LOADED with buttons, 5 which are very very easily reachable with your left thumb and forefinger.

Map your analog throttle input to the forward/backward motion of the joystick, map the leg turning to the left/right movement on the joystick. I've got weapon group 3 assigned to the trigger, PTT for vent assigned to the top button, targeting to the one below it, jump jets to the left top button, and naming overlay on the top right (most of my mechs have 3 or less weapon groups). The control is superb. The analog throttle lets you fluidly match pace with anything around you, to ease slowly forward or backward with a full writs motion, allowing for tons of precision. It's AWESOME. I can't stand playing with WASD anymore.

Try it out!

We ran with the Logitech controllers this year to allow the driver to move into the next driver station or switch positions with the co-driver as needed to improve his sight lines. If your students have used the Logitech controllers before, I'd personally recommend sticking to them.

A lot of teams use joysticks. Common ones are:

  • Mad Katz V1 - Ambidextrous, but I've heard bad things about the build quality
  • Logitech Extreme 3D - Includes twist axis, nice button set, but only right handed
  • Logitech Attack 3 - Ambidextrous, fairly rugged (we've had some since like 2010), but not readily available anymore.

Or you can totally jump the shark and go full-on 114 style DJ board and guitar as controllers!

This is for kids, so I think previous suggestions of CH Products stuff is unwise considering kids do occasionally break things.
In my experience, I have only Logitech products:

gamepad

joystick

I actually own a cheaper version of the gamepad I linked, but it seems it's no longer available. In any case, these two should do you fine, I haven't found any incompatibilities, although you might want to search through the reviews for terms like Ubuntu or Linux.

I don't know how helpful this is at all, but the joystick I used, the Attack 3, feels very small compared to all of the joysticks I've used before. It doesn't have a twist axis though. I went with the CH Pro Throttle as my other hand. That might be too big as well, so I couldn't tell you what to do for a throttle.

My advice might be terrible though, I'm pretty new to the whole space sim thing.

This is what I use

Along with the keyboard.

Why would you do this?

You can get an actual USB joystick for $20.

You're going to be converting some analog signal to digital, and you're going to be disappointed in the results.

Just get a USB joystick and be done.

You can't find info or adaptors because it generally doesn't work well.

Another poor college student here. I bought my self a cheap joystick(Logitech Attack 3) and use my keyboard as the other half(the throttle bit). It works pretty well for me.

Link to it on amazon if it helps:

You could go to the trouble of finding an adaptor, or you could buy a new joystick.

$18. You'll have to find a usb adaptor for that beast if you want to use it now and buy that for however much it is. I'd pay for the convenience on this one.

I have a reasonably old LogiTech ATK3 that I still use and quite enjoy.

I bought Elite: Dangerous and was planning on getting a HOTAS but the game got really boring really quickly, so I didn't see the use in spending $150.
