Currently I have on order "Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History" by Robert D. Kaplan. It is under 400 pages. It was recommended to me today by a friend when discussing past issues with the Balkans in preparing for next week's UN Security Council meeting dealing with Kosovo Independence. https://www.amazon.com/Balkan-Ghosts-Journey-Through-History/dp/0312424930

Don't take me wrong. He is a gifted writer. However, although he writes about people from a historical perspective, he is no historian. This is similar to trusting a locksmith to build a bridge over a river. If you want history, you should read books written by people trained in the field.
His books, while entertaining, need to be taken with a grain of salt. See "Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History"..

Historian. If you want independent confirmation, try Robert Kaplan's [Balkan Ghosts] (https://www.amazon.com/Balkan-Ghosts-Journey-Through-History/dp/0312424930).

> Not really; Alexis said he was interested because of stratfor's "coverage of the Balkans". Ridiculous.

Why is that rediculous? Stratfor really got on my radar because of Robert Kaplan's coverage of the Indian Ocean region is his book Monsoon. His book Balkan Ghosts is far more famous and noteworthy (it was influential during the Clinton Administration) so it makes complete sense that Alexis, if he was interested in the Balkans, would have picked up on Stratfor from Kaplan's Balkan writing.
