Speaking now as a local history librarian & certified archivist:

You do know those scrapbooking-type plastic sheet protectors are NOT acid-free, right? You can get archival-quality plastic display sheets online, but they aren't cheap.

Personally, I just use acid-free folders and banker boxes for everything. They're the standard storage medium for libraries and archives, they're sized for standard folders, they're inexpensive, and they stack neatly in your closet. Amazon has them and so does Walmart.

I especially wouldn't use air-tight plastic tubs for photos. And definitely NOT for pre-1900 photos, because the chemistry is different from the later Kodak methods and plastic tubs will retain moisture, which can destroy them. Snapshots and such from ~1930 and later will be just fine stored unmounted in acid-free folders.

I'm the oldest in my generation, the designated family historian, and so I now have (literally) several thousand photos from the 1860s through the 1990s. Mostly, I group them in folders by family and sometimes location, and I pencil a letter+numeral code number on the back (lightly). And then I have a separate sheet, or set of sheets, in each folder keyed to those numbers with all the notes I can gather and identification of people and so on. That info gets updated and expanded from time to time, and you don't want to be erasing and re-writing stuff on the back of the photo. You don't want to write that stuff on the photo itself, and you never want to write anything on a photo in ink. Pencil only!

All the photos that might conceivably be of interest to anyone else, I've scanned and organized in folders on my laptop. Many of those have been posted at one website or another, and they also are all stored at Carbonite (along with everything else on my computer). That also means I don't have to handle the physical photos very often. Ditto with most of the documents.

Also, this being hurricane and tornado country, that online storage gives me a backup in case of disaster. Even if I lose the house and the original photos, the images themselves will still exist.

One other thing -- and I can't stress this enough: There is a special circle in Dante's hell for people who LAMINATE old letters and documents in plastic. Do that, and you've just destroyed the document. FOREVER.

I have a file box (one of these cardboard types) that everything house related goes in. Individual folders inside for appliance manuals, receipts, and most everything else goes in "Misc".

It's really the bare minimum any homeowner should be doing. an active maintenance schedule is like super adult stuff that everyone should do, but nobody does.

Just for illustrative purposes:

Banker Boxes: http://www.amazon.com/Bankers-Box-Storage-Lift-Off-Letter/dp/B000FLZE7I -- As long as you keep them somewhere dry and safe, they basically last forever, and they're quite tough for reinforced cardboard. The material is similar to what you'd see in a heavy-duty moving box suitable for packing a bunch of heavy books. Hell, they make great moving boxes, too ;)

Pouches: Something like one of these. Need to have pre-punched holes. No need for an actual zipper, but they should have some method of closing them, such as a ziploc-type closure:

Note - you do NOT want "laminating" pouches, just storage pouches. Shop around for the best deals, as with anything else.

bankers box all the way! They are built for long-term storage. They are sturdy you can stack the games and boxes. write on the outside what's in each now. Cost about $3 a box.

You could buy archival storage boxes/bankers boxes. Like /u/pro-organizer said, use whatever sorting system works best (alphabetically, chronologically, etc.). Smaller cases can be put in a manila folder and large cases that don't fit in a manila folder can use the folder as a separator. On the tabs of each folder write whatever identifying information your dad usually uses when looking for cases so you'll see it when you take the lid off a box.

If I'm just playing, I have a messenger bag for my books and a rigid clipboard for my character sheets. Dice are either in a cinched dice bag or my dice vault.

If I'm running a system that requires lots of bits and bobs, like D&D, I have a rolling folding cart that holds everything tidily. If I'm not lugging my stuff very far (just from the car to the game store for instance) I'll just use a cheap banker's box.

I kept mine in a bankers box so I could hide it in the closet...
