I'd wait for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition ($7.49). I bought it and I love it, but you need a controller since it's a straightforward port, but also if you're not into first person action RPGs, then maybe Bioshock 1 and 2 ($4.99) or Batman Arkham GOTY Pack ($11.49) for action. Then there's Microsoft 5-Game Arcade/Indie Pack ($9.99) if you want to go casual (or just get Mark of the Ninja ($3.75) from it). Some people like The Storming, Burning, Reflecting, Flaming, Sabotaging Pack ($9.99).

If you like strategy games, I'd either look at the Paradox bundles or wait for X-COM and Civ V Gold because I think they'll be cheaper later this month. Oh, and there's the Sonic Action Pack ($9.99) if you like platformers. I don't myself, but Generations make it a great deal for $10.

No reason not to drop a few dollars on the current Humble Bundle, even if you only ever try Psychonauts. Stacking is pretty fun, but I don't know how well it would run on your system specs.

For more RPG goodness, there's a collection of the Infinity-engine-based D&D games, and separately, a similar collection of Neverwinter Nights games. Both of these collections are DRM-free, unless you count requiring unique CD-keys for online multiplayer in Neverwinter Nights. Singleplayer & multiplayer over LAN have no such requirement. (I realize some of the individual titles fall inside your window, but not all of them do, and they're worth mentioning regardless)

The D&D collections aren't currently being discounted, but GamersGate has put them on sale for less than $10 apiece more than once in the past year. I suspect they'll drop again sometime around Steam's summer sale. Even at full price, though, it's a bargain.

If you find yourself getting all hot and bothered over the Infinity-engine D&D collection, you should probably pick up the Avernum series. The graphics and interface aren't as highly polished, but the gameplay is a blast for CRPG fans. The same company also made a well-regarded series called Geneforge using a similar system, but I can't personally attest to their quality: I haven't had a chance to try them.

Even though it was released before your implied "What have I missed" window, System Shock 2 is well worth your time.

You should probably check out Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas at some point. A lot of people (myself included) consider it the best of the pre-GTAIV entries. I can't really say how it stacks up to GTAIV: When I get an urge to play a GTA game, I just load up San Andreas by instinct.

You will definitely want to try out the Batman Arkham games. Be forewarned, Arkham City uses Games for Windows Live, but it is possible to create an offline profile.

Funny enough, your laptop is actually beefy enough that it could pull off PS2 emulation with reasonable performance (You can almost definitely match the PS2's native resolutions, and you may be able to play at higher resolutions with decent framerates). There are far too many great PS2 games to list here, but some series you should definitely check out:

  • Megami Tensei
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Sly Cooper
  • Disgaea
  • Katamari
  • Kingdom Hearts (YMMV on this - Some people say the concept is too weird, the art us too cutesy, the dialogue is too emo, and the plot is too convoluted)
  • .hack
  • Xenosaga

Personally, I'd toss in Final Fantasy XII, but a lot of people were put off by the emphasis on a political plot as opposed to a romantic one.

In terms of other system emulation, you could also probably emulate the Wii reasonably well, in which case you should try:

  • Metroid Prime (The first two were re-released with enhanced controls for the Wii)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • The Last Story
  • Pandora's Tower
  • Super Mario Galaxy (1 & 2)

Honestly, if you stepped away in 2002, that's more than a decade of incredible games that you've missed out on. The list could go on and on.

Meanwhile Amazon has the other two in a bundle for $11.49 which is pretty neat.

Both Asylum and City GOTY are packaged together for $11.49 during Amazon's MAYhem Sale.

Just got a bundle of both from rhw amazon sale (incl. steam keys) for $11.49. Sorry Valve, wasn't going to risk this one slipping past.

Have you played any of Skyrim's expansions yet? I'd wait for a sale, obviously, but Dragonborn looks bitchin'. I've played all the way through Dawnguard and loved it.

Hm. $15... I just did a haphazard glance at Amazon's selection for that amount. Looks like the GOTY edition of the previous two Batman Arkham games are on sale right now, which might fit the profile of what you've given us. (Digital download, too!) Hope that helps!
