I just built a new PC. It cost me £1300 and outstrips the top of the range iMac which costs £2600 in every single way by a massive margin. I use one of those iMacs at work and it does the job just fine, plus the screen is lovely but there is absolutely zero justification for buying one outside of being more comfortable using Mac's OS over Windows. However if you're going to use a computer day in day out for your job it shouldn't be a problem to learn to use either or both.

The best thing about the iMac is its screen, so I priced up a top of the range alternative for my PC and it came to £400 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/BenQ-e-Sports-eQualiser-Flicker-free-Adjustable/dp/B00HYX1XCK - so even buying the screen you're still making a massive saving on a Mac. Add on to that the future proofing side in that you can upgrade individual elements and the vast array of additional applications/usage potential of a PC there's no way I could ever justify buying a Mac over a PC.

It's all good.

So when I was looking at these monitor's the BenQ atleast was £287.92 on Amazon and that is how much I got it for, I believe the Acer one was also around that price range, maybe £20-30 pounds more.

When I look at them now the Acer one is £380 O_O! And BenQ one has gone up to £326.89. Which sucks, but I think if you look around for both models you may find cheap ones. Depending from which country you're from.

Back to your question.
I ended up going with the BenQ one as I didn't wanna go through the hassle of ordering the Acer and returning if I didn't like. So far I am liking the BenQ one a lot! it does what you want it to do, 120hz and 144hz feel amazing if you're coming from a 60Hz monitor. There are plenty of monitor settings and features to let you tweak it around. (If you go with the benq one, let me know and I can provide you my settings)
I never got around testing the Acer one of course so I can't give you any information on that. My BenQ came to me with no scratches, dead pixels or defects, it was perfectly brand new.

The next thing you should ask yourself is, is CSGO the only game you're going to be playing most of the time? Games like CSGO, League of legends or any game where you can maintain that 144+ fps (or 120+fps if you use 120Hz) constantly then you're fine and BenQ will be perfectly fine for you. I'm sure you're getting more than 144FPS constantly in CSGO.

However if you're going to be playing other games, e.g. Battlefield 4. GTA5 etc then there is two things to consider.

  1. If your FPS hits below 60fps it won't feel that great, similar to how it wouldn't feel good with a 60Hz monitor. But if you had a GSYNC monitor you wouldn't have to worry about your FPS as it'd just be smooth! (But you would notice some problems if you was getting like 20fps in games ;d).

  2. If you're let's say running at 144Hz, and playing Battlefield 4 for example. When your FPS hits 144+ and then drops back below 144fps you may notice a VERY small difference in how smooth the game feels when you're at that 144+ fps when it matches or goes past the refresh rate of the monitor. However even though I notice this at times it does not annoying me at all because even when you're at 144Hz and getting around 70-110Fps it still feels very good, nothing feels choppy etc. - And I am still happily playing games like Battlefield 4, Blackops 3 and other games. (Used to play a lot of csgo so it was obviously great then too!).

Finally if you do go with the GSYNC monitor there is I believe input lag when GSYNC is enabled. Doubt it's that much to be noticeable but I guess in games like CSGO it's important. But since in CSGO you are most likely hitting more than 144fps when playing you can always keep GSYNC disabled when not using it, and then enable it for any high graphically demanding games you play for a smooth gaming experience. I suppose that is the benefits of going with GSYNC since you won't be to worried about your FPS or input lag in games like GTA V etc. - HOWEVER i have no idea how the Acer screen will be in regards of colours, lightbleed etc, no idea! - If you can afford it then maybe you'd just want to go with a BenQ GSYNC monitor? Or save your money for ISP 144Hz 1ms GSYNC monitors (I think they may be out already but expensive..)

But if you're really just going to be playing CSGO as your primary game and have a powerful enough PC that where you'll pretty much always be getting more than 60FPS in new games (even if you have to turn graphic settings down) then BenQ will be great.

This is what I use. Need to play with the settings, and you can find a profile on the web to upload to the monitor. It starts off quite bright. Otherwise it's pretty good.

Alright, that's a pretty beasty pc. so for 470€ you can get the Benq XL2720Z, wich is 27" and of course 144hz.

I also play PS4 pro, I use this monitor , I got the 144hz because I plan on moving to pc. For PS4 pro you may as well save some money and get a 60hz monitor. This is the same monitor , just in 60hz. I think the game looks better at 27" but most pro's use 24".

Thanks for the reply!

So the 1070 definitely sounds like it's the go-to option. I think I'll wait for the prices of the custom coolers to go down a little bit as well. Out of curiosity, how would two 8GB RX 480's hold out against it?

As for the course, I've finished my first year at Newcastle Uni, but our coursework in the first year could be done anywhere. Second year we've got a group project to complete. I mean, the only reason the course comes into play, is that, and I'm sure you'll agree, having your IDE on one screen and stack overflow or documentation on another, is a god send and makes life so much more easier.

Which brings me onto my next point. I cannot justify to myself spending £530 on a monitor. Believe me, I want to, it's just a hell of a lot of money for one. Currently there's a deal on this BenQ Monitor for example for £292 but it's only 1080p. The problem is that 1440p monitors are expensive. I could obviously always just get the one monitor and use my current monitor as the second screen.

Sometimes I hate having too many options, haha XD
