This sort of road rage, even in New Jersey, is very rare. But I picked up one of those Russian anti-scam cams for $45 + a microSD.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FONBG1A/ - Looks like it's up to $65 now.

This one was recommended in a reddit thread a few months ago and I've since bought it and love it!

I don't remember the exact post, but it was some dude in /r/videos who had his car t-boned by a bitch in a PT cruiser when she ran a red. I'm on my phone so maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about and can find it for you.

I was driving down a 2 lane street day before yesterday, someone oncoming decided to cross the yellow divider to pass someone and was coming at me head on, I had to slow down. I also had someone tailgating my ass at the same time. Today I get some fucktard who decides the speed limit is to slow, tailgated me, makes a lane next to me where there isn't one, I honk, he flips me off.. I have been thinking about a dash cam, even put one on my wish list on Amazon. I decided it is a necessity.

Order two, one for the front, one for the back. Seriously. I was rear ended near Arlington Cemetery and the guy drove off. Got his plates off of the tape and subsequently made his life hell.

u/KokiriEmerald · 40 pointsr/gadgets
u/DidIMiss60b · 25 pointsr/Louisville

Did you have to show the footage to the police for their report? People need to learn to drive correctly, not politely. That is so dangerous. Whenever someone starts waving me out, I just pretend to look in my backseat for something or try to wave them on. I'm not pulling across 3-4 lanes of traffic because one person stopped to let me out.

Also, what's your dash cam setup? I've got this one.

u/Forthac · 22 pointsr/nononono

The G1W is pretty much the standard consumer dashcam that is not super expensive, fairly reliable, and films in HD.

I have used one for 2 years now and, other then having to reformat the sd card one time, have had no issues. Turns on and off along with the car, can record for over 8 hours with a 32GB SD card (make sure it's class 10). Over all I have been happy with it. Just make sure you aren't getting some weird knockoff.

Great $50 investment. Mine has been running 24/7 for over 2 years now with no issues.

Here is actual footage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITY-pMw7GGc

It records about 12 hours of footage and then starts recording over whatever was recorded 12 hours previously.

u/Schwa88 · 20 pointsr/houston

I use a G1W, which is a pretty cheap Chinese dashcam. It works great, I typically get about 8-9 hours of recording at 1080. The mount is terrible, and the sound is pretty muffled, but it's cheap and works well. I may upgrade in the future.

u/hrmiracle · 19 pointsr/videos

Hey thanks bro - I'll look for ones that have these specs. /u/K2QJXuGmtcNPKsA8 recommended the G1W and it sounds like it hits all your recommendations.

u/rijnzael · 11 pointsr/Denver

This is the dashcam: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FONBG1A

And I got this SD card per the recommendations I got from the reviews: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004G7D0EG

The camera is pretty awesome. It's motion detecting, so it begins recording automatically once I start driving, but it will turn the display off after a little bit to help prevent distractions. It also comes with a 12V socket adapter, which I use.

u/jellysandwich · 11 pointsr/personalfinance

Any recommendations? I got this Black Box G1W Original Dashboard Dash Cam a while back but it died after a couple of months. Kinda disappointed by this "#1 best seller"

u/docnotsopc · 11 pointsr/vancouver

https://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A

I highly recommend this camera. Sometimes it goes on sale as low as the $30s. Grab a microSD card too and you're set.

Disclaimer it's by no means the best, but it's consistently ranked one of the best value dash cams online. You can spend more and get better night vision or a backward dash though but you're getting into the $130-250 range. Some dashcams will turn on via motion sensor if your car gets bumped while parked.

Logistically if you're wondering, it plugs into USB which I have plugged into the cigarette lighter output via a small adapter. Camera turns on when car starts and off a few mins after you park your car. Footage wise it eventually just loops and tapes over the oldest footage

u/SoberIRL · 11 pointsr/houston

If anyone is interested in doing their part, I've been using this one for about six months. Works great, footage is clean and clear, and I never have to mess with it.

u/Teh_Compass · 10 pointsr/Firearms

For the first story I recommend a dashboard camera. Might save your ass in court if someone cuts you off and brake checks you like that.

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A

Or http://www.amazon.com/G1W-C-1080P-H-264-Capacitor-Model/dp/B00JJ3SQRI if you live somewhere hot. Same camera but has a capacitor, which is more resistant to heat than batteries, but it doesn't stay on long when the car is off.

The G1W is highly recommended if you just want a basic cheap dashcam that records at 1080p. There are other more expensive cameras with more features but that's up to you. I have the G1W-C, the capacitor one. Works great.

u/TurboTertle · 9 pointsr/Roadcam

You can get a decent dash cam for about $50, but honestly you're better off spending at least $100. I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FONBG1A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The reviews were somewhat mixed. It seemed like you had a 50/50 chance of receiving a good one or a bad one. Luckily I got a good one, but even so the menu is SUPER difficult to use, the light will randomly turn on at nighttime, out of every 100 times I start my car it won't turn on so I have to unplug it and replug it in. The video and audio it records is great, but I wish I had just spent an additional $20-$50 and had something 3 times as nice.

I don't know much about dashcams, but I just wanted to share my experience with you. Since you're pretty much going to spend at least $50 to get any kind of dashcam it just makes sense to save up a little more and get way more bang for your buck. With that said if you can only afford a cheap one you will still be better off than not having one at all.

u/RapideGT · 6 pointsr/Cartalk

I just hooked up this dashcam in my car. Took awhile to arrive but I was in no hurry. It's definitely cheap ($50, free shipping), and you can tell, but I see no reason for it to malfunction since there are no moving parts and it just sits on your window. Reviews for it are really positive, that's why I bought it.

I can't review it at all for you since I installed it last night, so here's a video review.

u/Shadow14l · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife
u/Shiner_Black · 6 pointsr/Anarcho_Capitalism

This video from Flex your Rights is pretty good. I used tips from the first section of it to get out of two speeding tickets.

The second section covers how to deal with police when they interact with you on the street and the third covers when they come to your home. Flex Your Rights has other good videos with more example situations.

It's also a good idea to invest in a dashcam, so conversations during a traffic stop can be recorded. A cop's word will trump a private citizen's, but it won't trump an audio recording. I have a Rexing V1, but have heard good things about the G1W, which is much cheaper.

I hope that helped.

u/M_Sliver_Surfer · 5 pointsr/houston

I actually just ordered 2 dash cams for my car and my wifes car. I posted a link on another comment of mine here but I can post again.

I have one of these in my car, works great:
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A

Records at a nice clear 1080p and I can identify plates for sure during the day and mostly at night. Really easy to install, I just leave mine plugged into the cig lighter and it includes a tool to help tuck the cable out of the way along the headliner and a-pilar.

u/Vectorbug · 5 pointsr/Seattle

Somewhat related: After having witnessed many buses in Seattle running red lights (which doesn't seem to be the case with this story) I started a (admittedly super boring) YouTube channel "Cars Running Reds" with dashcam footage from my car. My second video shows a bus blatantly running a red light, downtown followed by a taxi. A completely common occurrence here.

I use a pretty cheap Blackbox G1W purchased from Amazon. Really easy to install. When the memory card gets full, it overwrites the oldest files. I bought it for peace of mind having purchased a new car last year and also been the victim of a hit and run here in Seattle.

I'm a personal fan of the Vico-Marcus 3, but I've heard good things about the A119, and the G1W (or the G1WC)

Get something in your price range, and make sure it has the features you want. Do you want GPS? Ultra-high-res/FPS? Amazing night-time sensors? Automatic crash detection with saving?

Take a look at https://dashcamtalk.com/ for more info about pretty much any dashcam you want.

The G1W with a 16gb card. I'd probably opt for the 32gb in the future, but if it's just for accidents only and not youtube posting, 8gb should be fine.

G1W: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A

It's about $70. Automatically comes on when the power comes on. Requires an SD card. READ the comments. The newer faster memory cards don't work. The older slower speed cards do. That saves you money. Just make sure you get the right card.

I may have bought it from a different vendor. But it's the same camera.

One tip: Never do a factory reset. The default language is not English. Otherwise you have to figure out how to change languages back.

I use this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FONBG1A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I purchased a 32gb micro sd card. It records on 3, 5, or 10 min cycles until the card is full, then starts writing over the oldest bits. Stores roughly the last 5 hours of driving. I use it plugged into a 12volt that comes on when I start the car and the camera comes on and starts recording and stops about 30 sec after the key is off. Takes a great video, with or without sound. No issues at all.

u/rolfraikou · 3 pointsr/tifu

I absolutely love this little guy.

Decently priced (only $53), USB powered, decent resolution. Ok night, not outstanding, but even some of the $150 don't perform as well at night as this one. Uses a micro SD card, up to 32GB, writes multiple movie files. When it fills up, it deletes the oldest, and writes a new file.

I currently only have the one on the front, but I do have two usb ports. I'm using the second one for my phone, but considering getting one of these for the rear as well.

u/dichotomies · 3 pointsr/pics

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FONBG1A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Just switch off motion sensor and infared. Get a 32 gb microsd card (4 or 10 series). I set it up for 720p and I think 60 fps. Set it so that it dumps files every 5 or 10 mins. It turns on whenever the car starts up and shuts down whenever the car does. After a while you forget it's there. For the price, it's a worthwhile investment. My barber told me a story of being a victim of an insurance scam. That's what got me started down this road. Hopefully I'll never need it. Best case, I can use it to help someone else. Oh, and the video clips overlap each other, so there is no loss of video.

u/nohassles · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Standard electronics disclaimer, but http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FONBG1A that one gets mentioned most every time the topic comes up. There was a video up of a guy reviewing it which I found pretty impressive, maybe YouTube it.

u/coredumperror · 3 pointsr/videos

I bought the Black Box G1W-C dash cam, and put this MicroSD card into it. If you don't live in a climate where it ever gets very hot (like Southern California, where I live), you can get the regular G1W version, which is cheaper since it uses a battery rather than a capacitor (capacitors are more heat-resistant). Both versions need to stay plugged in to your lighter socket at all times, though, since even the battery version only lasts 5-10 minutes without external power.

It's too large to fit behind the rear view mirror on my Prius C, so I put it in the upper-right corner of my windshield, and aim is slightly to the left so it catches my entire front view. The suction cup that attaches it to the glass is very sturdy.

I've been pretty happy with the overall recording quality (license plates are clearly legible in the day, though you need to be pretty close at night), and it acts as a MicroSD card reader when you plug it into the USB on your computer, so I didn't need to buy a reader to be able to export the videos. And you can directly play back the videos on the device itself.

u/Bensawsome · 3 pointsr/legaladvice

This won't help with your current situation but if there is a lot of accident fraud that occurs in your area get a dashcam. Below is a link for a nice cheap one that takes good 1080p video. Full 1080p HD video recorded to a MicroSD. I mounted mine with a suction cup mount to the right of my rear view mirror, and used a bicycle tire lever (can also use a flat head screw driver with electrical tape over the end) to hide the wire in my headliner, down the A-pillar, and into my fuse box so that it comes on and off automatically when I start my truck. This is an advanced method, as most people just use the supplied adapter that plugs into your cigarette lighter.

u/plki76 · 3 pointsr/gaming

I have bought two of these. First one lasted like 2 years. Second one is still going. They're cheap and they will break, but they only cost like $50 and they do exactly what I want. Ring buffer, automatic on when car starts, video quality is good.

u/AnonymousWeb · 3 pointsr/Lexus

Absolutely! I can't stop recommending a dash cam in everyone's car. Having one has saved me twice in previous cars, where it's my word against theirs in a accident. I show the police officer the video and it's case closed.

I have used a few in different vehicles and my new favorite is the [Rexing V1] (https://www.amazon.com/V1-Dashboard-Recorder-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B00X528FNE/ref=lp_10517197011_1_1?srs=10517197011&ie=UTF8&qid=1484396363&sr=8-1), I love that it uses a mounting plate instead of a suction cup. The [BlackBox G1W] (https://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484396572&sr=8-1&keywords=blackbox+g1w+dash+cam) is half the price and uses a suction cup, smaller screen, slightly cumbersome interface, but is still a reliable cam that I still use in two other vehicles. Be sure to buy the [Hardwire Kit] (https://www.amazon.com/Rexing-Hard-Wire-Mini-USB-Port/dp/B01LXC2329/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484396782&sr=8-1&keywords=rexing+hardwire) so you can hide the wire and not use a 12V outlet.

I tapped into 12V ignition power from the sunroof controls, others have used mirror power to feed cams. Also, be sure to only use a "Class 10" SD card to avoid file errors. You can use T-taps (see album link above for example) for a simple connection, I would only recommend using T-taps for very low power consuming devices, otherwise use butt splices (source: 10 year industrial power & controls technician)

Or get one like a regular dash cam http://amzn.com/B00FONBG1A and mod the mount or a epic like http://amzn.com/B005GRFTMQ . Probably not as good quality as gopro, but at least it is something.

u/isionous · 2 pointsr/Anarcho_Capitalism

Dash cams make sooo much sense. I highly recommend them, and with this crowd, that recommendation might not fall on deaf ears. They are such a cheap protection. No longer do you have to worry about a he-said-she-said situation after an automobile collision, or several other types of situations. They are no hassle; with the auto-looping and auto-power-on/off, you don't have to even touch the dash cam at all unless you want to download videos off of it. Also, I think it's neat, like if you want to analyze your driving route, re-listen to a conversation, or just check out something you passed by earlier.

Dash cams are very popular in places like Russia, and I think the biggest thing holding back dash cam popularity in places like USA is...they aren't already popular. Lots of people don't even know that dash cams are actually a thing. Also, people think "well, no one else seems to have one".

I have both a $63 DVR-207GS (which is a slightly newer version of the DVR-027) and a $47 G1W. I like the G1W better. I think the G1W has better video quality, wider visual angle, better audio, a far better mount, better interface, is more discreet, and other small stuff. The G1W is just awesome and it's less than $50. It's ridiculous that dash cams aren't more popular.

Note: The G1W uses a car-lighter-to-mini-usb cable and that crapped out on me after a few months, but I bought a car-lighter-to-dual-usb adapter and a usb-to-mini-usb cable, and everything was great again. Still cheaper in total than the DVR-207GS I bought.

The $239 Lukas LK-7900 ACE is rated highly for high temperature survival, has GPS features, and seems like a really nice camera in many other respects as well. I think if my two cheapo dash cams can't survive the upcoming summer, I'm going to buy a Lukas LK-7900 ACE or maybe something with dual cameras (like the Lukas LK-5900 HD Duo). Or heck, I might upgrade even if the cheapos do fine during the summer.

I feel much safer with my dash cam, and that's a great feeling.

Yes, 75. Had a few near miss here and there from people coming in and out of the HOV lane. As for the dashcam it's a Black Box G1W Though I recommend getting front and back cams.

I was able to review my day when I got home from work so I just estimated 9 hours. Some reviewers say they get more around 5-6 hours at 1080 so that makes me think I might have it on 720 by accident..

Not /u/LaurentPointCa, but I did get a dashcam off of Amazon. Here is the link. I got it for about 55, not 65 though, I guess the price fluctuates a bit. Anyway, I love it. It's a great camera that records about 5 hours on a full card, however it has autoloop so it will do 5 minute loops and then fill the card with the loops, then when the card gets full it will delete the old ones and loop over them.

But yeah, the quality is great I find, although ofcourse nighttime has some problems (depending on the height of your vehicle due to incoming traffic headlights).

u/dougmc · 2 pointsr/Austin

I'm not the OP but I've got one of these, though the price seems to have gone up -- I paid about $50. I'll bet it's $50 again within a few weeks -- prices fluctuate.

In any event ... his seems to have slightly higher image quality, and the GPS features are nice as well, but mine works quite nicely for 1/3rd to 1/4th the price. Mine works decently at night as well.

u/B5_S4 · 2 pointsr/Audi

So I installed my dashcam today, its a Blackbox G1W and it works pretty well. It auto-starts/stops and has plenty of options for recording. This video is 30FPS at 1080P. I'm not affiliated with the company, just figured you guys might like to see what they can do if you're thinking about buying one.

u/BlueShellOP · 2 pointsr/bayarea

I use this one - $50 and it has an auto-on feature (when it gets power it turns on...yeah so fancy). It'll record in 5 minute chunks, and then delete the oldest chunk when the MicroSD gets full. Doesn't record audio, tho.

Mine came with a finicky power thing, so I bought a generic USB car charger and used that - no issues since, and it's been 3/4 months.

u/81c537 · 2 pointsr/Austin

Despite the attractive price, don't get this one.

It was my first dash cam, and it worked fine for a while. I'm not sure when it stopped working, but once I crashed and went to recover the video, I found it had been skipping video recording at random intervals. One of those times it decided not to record was when I got into a crash.

u/fredricksen · 2 pointsr/Atlanta

I got mine off Amazon, it was a G1W. It's now $54, this link is exactly what I ordered last February. It's not the nicest dash cam, but I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever.

I just use a 32gb card, and it records 24/7 - Doesn't drain the battery in my vehicle. I once went probably 4 days without starting my car and it still started. I get about 12 hours of recording with a 32gb. The internal battery lasts no more than a minute, but that's long enough to process the file and close out the video incase you are in an accident where the power no longer works in your vehicle.

This is not the video of my incident, but it's the YouTube video that made me decide to go with this one.

Well... I can say what I pick for myself. But... I really recommend you to do a bit of researching yourself. I bought my dashcam about a year and half ago and that specific one had been around for some time.

Mine do work, but... It do have its own downside such as it is not easy to navigate or adjust things to your needs, and all that. Plus it doesn't start when I start the jeep or turn off when I turn the jeep off. So I have to do it manually and even then it doesn't always turn off on its own.

But it do work good and have good graphic and all that. On other hand... I think it could be better. Or it could just be that mine have some issue...

Sorry for long post. I just don't want to make an recommend on something that I am not 100 confident on. But... Here is newer version of what I have:

Sure can. I've been through several of them for varying reasons. I've been using the G1W for the last couple years, though. I love it. It just works. (you may be able to find it somewhere cheaper. That link was just to the first result when I googled).

The only advice I have, though, is this... There are two different types of cars in the world. Ones that cut power to the cigarette lighter when the car is off and ones that keep power going when the car is off. If yours cuts power when you turn off the ignition, you never have to think about the cam again. If you're like me, and the power keeps going when the engine is off, you have to remember to turn the cam on and off when needed. And if you forget to turn it off in the summer heat, the camera will melt. I've ruined several cams that way.

My GF, on the other hand, has a car that cuts power when off. She never has to worry about it.

u/theonetruesexmachine · 2 pointsr/Miata

No problem.

Yeah you leave it plugged into 12V. The battery is only for when your car is off. It will enter a "sleep" mode (configurable) where it will detect acceleration and record a video whenever that happens (to attempt to catch a hit and run). They pretty much all work that way.

The other go-to recommendation I see people making is the G1W. I opted to skip that one because there's no screen and I find it a lot more obvious once installed than the one I have (nobody will know you have a dashcam unless they're specifically looking).

G1W. There is a newer version of this thing which is why this is $49 on amazon currently (I paid $67 back in February). As you can guess, low light isn't as great, 1080p is essentially upscaled 720p, and the menus are somewhat in broken english. Overall I highly recommend, watch out for the fake ones if you plan on buying one. There are youtube videos going over the differences, many of those speculate they are probably made in factories not too far from eachother but the fake ones don't have as good of quality and lie about the specs.

u/eraider · 1 pointr/Roadcam

I've been using this and it's been great so far. 1080p and fairly cheap considering your budget. Probably a good idea to tack on a 32GB memory card also. Should still come under $70.

one thing that I did while buying my G1W-C from Amazon was to compare the number and quality of ratings that previous buyers have given.

for example this G1W-C seller on Amazon that I was recommended via this website while googling for G1W-C has more than 700 reviews and an average rating of 3.5 stars.

Other G1W-C sellers that I found an Amazon had less ratings and less number of reviews.. hence I went ahead and bought the one with better number of reviews and good rating..

Hope this helps everyone.

u/OlympiaWest · 1 pointr/AutoDetailing

This is the one that I use. There's others out there that have more capability, but this one is cheap and simple. It records about 8 hours on an overwriting loop and turns on and off by itself, so you never have to touch it unless you want to remove the SD card and keep some video.

u/Harborcoat84 · 1 pointr/Winnipeg

I picked up this one on a reddit recommendation [link]. It was about $40 at the time and took over 2 months to arrive, I ended up getting the credit back (notice how it doesn't ship to Winnipeg anymore). I think it's pretty good, night mode is 50/50 and I have to manually unplug it because it won't turn off automatically. Of course it was "free" so I don't really mind.

I got this a while back when it was on sale for $50. It is a great dash cam, although i have yet to use it in any real world issues.

The resolution is fantastic (its 1080p) for a small dash cam and while the built in mic isn't the best, the only thing it gets used for is recording my awful singing voice.

Fuck. I just got mine recently and decided to test it out today. I ordered it from Amazon here but at the time, this shipment was not fulfilled by Amazon and it was sold by Zeagoo. It also didn't have the Prime option and it was about $45 when I got it. Here's part of the email I received from Amazon the day I bought it. It took over a month to arrive and I was excited to use it because the reviews reassured me that I would be satisfied.

I was wrong.

After playing the footage on my computer, I too noticed something was off. The quality...It just wasn't great. Prior to ordering this dash cam, I watched a video review on it and I remembered how nice the quality actually was. So here I am searching reddit today, when I stumble upon this post.

  • My Time/Date stamp is on the left side.
  • It has grainy quality, as well as the weird buzzing sound.
  • It saved the video as .AVI

Here is a test run video of my G1W.

Honestly the heat impacted it more than the cold. The case would get very soft so it wouldn't sit well in its clip. Never had a single problem in the cold, and it being a cheap camera probably says good things about their resilience in the cold.

I thought about using my iPhone as a dashcam. I figured I always have it in the car, so why wouldn't it work? I looked into it some more recently after a dumbass ran out in front of my car, and I almost ran him over. It was totally his fault, but if I had actually hit him, it would've been tough to defend myself if he decided to try to blame me.

I did a bunch of reading about using my phone, and it just sounds like way more hassle than it's worth. Instead, I think I'm going to buy this dedicated dashcam. It records 1080p, auto starts when you start your car, records on a loop, and is only $53. You can just set it up and forget about it forever. Then, if you ever get into an accident or something, you have the video.

I don't have the model in front of me, it is a Chinese unit I got for about $50. The only thing I don't like about it is it will either record five minutes at a time then go back and record over it, or will record on the whole SD card then run out of memory and I have to manually erase the card. I wish it would loop the whole card.

It is pretty close to this unit: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A/ref=sr_1_12?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1482188876&sr=1-12&keywords=dash+cam&refinements=p_36%3A1253505011

But I actually was impressed with the video quality of this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FONBG1A/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_fgDDwbQ7TEV6D

Here is one that has been mentioned on Reddit multiple times when dash cam videos get to the front page. It's reasonably priced and great for its value.

u/TriflingGnome · 1 pointr/videos

I bought this one. The build is kinda cheap and it's a pain to navigate the menus, but the quality is perfectly fine and its plugged into my cigarette lighter so it starts recording when I turn the car off / turns off when I stop.

u/achenx75 · 1 pointr/videos

I bought this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1451019722&sr=1-8&keywords=dash+cam

I've had it in my car for a year and a half and it still works great. I live in New Jersey, so it has experienced roasting in hot summer days to freezing in frigid winter mornings.

u/RootHouston · 1 pointr/houston

Wow, only 50 bucks on Amazon. Now that's worth it.

u/an_us · 1 pointr/Austin

I got this one. It's a great, relatively cheap entry level dash cam.

No complaints yet and I've had it for a year. But judging from the reviews your mileage may vary.

u/YourFavoriteBandSux · 1 pointr/longisland

I got one of these: Amazon link. I suction cupped it to the windshield, "behind" the mirror where it's out of my sight. Recommended.

u/alphanovember · 1 pointr/newjersey

Everyone seems to recommend the G1W.

Thanks OP. The hypertext link didn't work for me on mobile, but I google searched the context and came up with this: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Original-Dashboard-Dash/dp/B00FONBG1A Looks like a nifty little device.

u/amabarackobama · 1 pointr/newjersey

I've had a G1W for about a year. The video is great quality and the cam doesn't obscure my view. It can be taken down in seconds if need be.

u/Bleach3825 · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

I have been looking at this one. I haven't bought it yet but it has decent reviews and it isn't to costly.

amazon , blackbox g1w, shoots in 1080p, or lower if you prefer more footage over higher quality. removable sd card, g sensor (if someone hits your parked car), and you can hardwire it into your car (or have someone else do it, if thats not your thing) so that you dont have to worry about forgetting to turn it on. only thing i wish it had is gps logging, but those are available too. seriously, everyone should have one. one thing the russians definitely got right.

u/for2fly · 1 pointr/needadvice

There are dashcams you can run from inside your vehicle.

You can even get wireless cameras that utilize your wi-fi and record to your home's network.

Set one up. Record while parked. Catch the culprits in the act. Sue their asses for repairs.

I've seen this G1W recommended many times on reddit.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DATSUN · 1 pointr/videos

Good advice to get a dash cam but do NOT just go and buy the "cheapest drivepro".

There is a great market for cheap dashcams and currently the G1W holds the position of cheapest/most effective dashcam per $. Only $50 and takes microSD up to 32GB, I have one and it has worked flawlessly through winter and summer for over 2 years now. Also it does 1080p. Highly recommend.

You should invest in a nice HD dashcam like this one. There was a video of some guy getting hit by a PT Cruiser on the front page recently and that's what he uses.

u/Why_Is_This_NSFW · 1 pointr/Dashcam

Yeah, I had one fail after about a year and a half, another fail after 6 months. My 3rd one I made sure I got an actual Black Box model and it has outlasted the first one. The case is starting to come apart a bit, probably from the heat, but it still works fine.

u/alanmagid · 1 pointr/gadgets

A lot of Russians use the smart phone approach but I agree, awkward to mount one.
This might do. The next step up is about 300 USD.

Do you mean this one? with the recommended 32gb card, how much time in the loop?

u/bornes · 1 pointr/Hawaii

I don't know. There was a really popular post on reddit a few months back where they recommended the G1W, which ended up being what I got as well. While the unit itself is great so far, the suction cup (of all things) broke the very first day I got it, rendering it unuseable until I could get an adapter to hook it onto my rear view mirror. I got it all right now and it does take good video so there is that. I had one dash cam before this one which absolutely sucked and burned out after a few weeks of staying in my car in the HI sunlight. This one hasn't crapped out on me yet.

and the adapter:

u/7yearlurkernowposter · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

this one It had pretty good reviews and I'm not going to drop $200 on a fancy model when at the end of the day its just a security feature not an entertainment one.

I just like having new devices to play with. Agreed with the insurance fraud though, I was quite surprised when that finally (almost) happened to me. Really glad I was able to stop in time for both our sakes.

u/xAngus · 1 pointr/australia

I remember this being recommended a lot on one of those front page dashcam videos.

Google has produced the following suggestion:

G1W: http://www.amazon.com/Blueskysea-1920x1080-G1W-Dashboard-Detection/dp/B00FONBG1A

It seems to be a shady market on the whole though so stick with something well-reviewed. Also, have you considered rigging your phone or an older one you have?

I would recommend checking out the Amazon Best Sellers Category as whole: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Car-Dash-Mounted-Video/zgbs/electronics/3248689011

The ones mounted in rear-view mirrors seem the most practical to me.

u/iamactuallyalion · 1 pointr/TalesFromThePizzaGuy

The G1W is probably your best bet for recording quality vs price. Here's a review with some footage.

Sorry this happened to you. ]:

u/zshazz · 1 pointr/Mustang

I haven't gotten one yet, but I was considering the G1W. They're on Ebay and "Amazon" (sold through Amazon, but it isn't sold by Amazon). That's around $53 as of right now. Kinda cheap compared to some of them which go up to as much as $200.

I'd definitely recommend researching them instead of just taking my word for it because I definitely don't have enough experience with these things, but that's the one I've seen many others suggest.

u/TheUncertainty · 1 pointr/CCW

[The dashcam I have.] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FONBG1A/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=XV11BGMHIJNL&coliid=I3R2NM4V0ANHOZ) The only thing I've used it for so far is showing people a gigantic bear that I came across.

u/ImAwesome64 · 1 pointr/Dodge

My dad has a G1W-c dash cam. They're relatively cheap and record in 1080p, but build quality is mediocre. The one we have also doesn't hold a charge, but we keep it plugged in so it's not too big of an issue. Here are some links:

Yep it's legal. I got this one because I wasn't looking on spending to much money but if I could would have got a front/rear camera one instead of a front one with this one.

That's a fake one. I just bought a real one from a sick deals FP deal... Takes a few weeks to ship, but video quality is worth it..

I have an older version of that one.

Video and audio quality is good, to power you just plug it into your cigarette lighter. I can't speak for the night time recording abilities though, because my version doesn't have that.

My only complaint is the suction cup sometimes doesn't work. Sometimes it would stick to my window just fine, sometimes it would fall off. I eventually just tied it to my rear-view mirror with wire.

u/Woddeh · 0 pointsr/Dashcam

This will work, but you need to understand that:

  • Video will be choppy because you won't have a proper mount.
  • Phones aren't designed to record for hours at a time, so be wary of the lens.
  • It's going to need to be plugged in the entire journey. (Unless it's short)
  • Doesn't support loop recording

If you're absolutely positive that a dash cam would be a waste of money for you (which I can understand and respect) then your phone will act as a good enough, temporary substitute.

If you're going to need to use it for a while, perhaps a fortnight, I'd strongly recommend picking up something fit for purpose, this one will set you back $60, or this one for $53.

You can also get an even cheaper camera, you're not going to be demanding much of it, so I'm confident even something like this would do the trick. Just.

$900 you say?

I have a really nice pen. It writes in sub zero temps, under water, sideways, upside down, and it really carries a lot of sentimental value. I don't want to part with it, but I suppose I could for around $700. Eh, I don't want to be greedy. It is slightly used, but still near mint. How about $500?

Edit: Apparently nobody on Reddit realizes $900 is way too much for a dashcam
