I bought one of these and have been pretty happy with it so far.
I've used a Black and Decker one that works just fine. It works well on either 12V or 120V, but takes a little longer when plugged in to 12V.
My dad had a black and decker air compressor that we used for balls, bikes, and car tires. It is so much easier doing it in the driveway then going to a gas station. I don't know how powerful the car ones are, but these guys are pretty great.

You can fit a small air compressor in a backpack

I just bought a Black and Decker corded one that works off either AC or DC and it works just fine. Even comes with a needle for balls and a couple of attachments for blowing up kiddie toys like rafts and swimming pools.
I guess the advantage of an actual air compressor rather than an "inflator" is that they have tanks of compressed air and can power the air tools, whereas the little inflators can't. I've never needed an air compressor for anything except inflating toys and tires though so it's a wash for me.
$15 tire patch kit from your auto-parts store, and this Black & Decker ASI300 Air Station Inflator
Some people use [these] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00280BL9O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pKQfzb41KSST4) gauges but I think you lose too much pressure when connecting/disconnecting because of the small tire. I just use a [standard bike pump] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WN3V9AM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3OQfzbX9T9PB7) or [compressor] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000IE0YIQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sQQfzb06QGEZX).

I've used it now on both cars and actually enjoyed using it. I enjoyed it so much that I even went ahead and filled the spares up with air. It even has a needle attachment for your basketball.
I know you said that your previous compressors all quickly stopped working, but this one has a 2 year warranty on it. It also has a normal plug and an cigarette lighter plug. My only complaint so far is that the normal plug cable is a bit short. An orange outdoor extension cable easily fixes that problem.
