There are only two acceptable manga: Naruto, and BLAME!. BLAME! is currently being re-released as a 6-volume "master series," and I am ALL OVER THAT. Amazon link to vol. 1, for funsies.
There are only three acceptable non-movie anime: Cowboy Bebop, GiTS:SAC, and Samurai Champloo. DBZ doesn't count because it's fucking timeless and impervious to judgement.
Acceptable anime movies is a more broad category, but there still are strict standards: Akira, GiTS, Princess Mononoke, Spriggan, Vampire Hunter D, and Ninja Scroll. There are others (basically anything Miyazaki touches is gold), but, as with all anime, it is easy to go wrong.
