I tried charging it when it was apparently still wet from being in my pocket during a rainstorm. Phone wouldn't charge while plugged in and I smelled something burning...you're not alone.

My issue is intermittent, and the above post makes it sound like I can fix it with a safety pin. Accordingly, I haven't made the fix yet, but I bought the part on Amazon:

You can probably use the pogo-pin connector, but you'd have to build something that would ensure a good connection to the pins. I believe that if you're looking at the edge of the phone with the power button to your left, the left-most pin is GND and the right-most pin is +5V.
