Step 3.1- find a good instructor. When I say "find" go take lessons from several people over the course of a month and get someone you can "click with".
Step 3.2- Spend 10 minutes a day practicing proper hand technique on a pad. (For these instructions see step 3.1)
Step 3.3- Start learning to count and read basic rhythmic notation. This will unlock many elements and will allow you to figure out drum parts on the fly. (For these instructions see step 3.1)
Step 3.4- Read this book.
When I competed in sports a coach had me read Body Mind Mastery and it was a pretty interesting read. I bring it up because it touches on this.
I form habits that help get and keep me in the zone, like a bedtime ritual that makes falling asleep easier. Things like posture, breathing, and a mental cue/phrase to help form habits over time of getting you calm, ready, and focused for your task.
Mind Body Mastery by Dan Millman helped me when I first started lifting. He used to be a collegiate men's gymnastics coach but I found what he was saying applicable to any sort of athletic endeavor.
