Somewhat related, but back in the 80's NYC Chinatown there was a lot of beef between Vietnamese gangs and Chinese gangs.

If I had to guess, it's because Vietnamese were the poorer new kids on the block and had to carve out a space for themselves, being regulated to previously established Asian enclaves.
