Off the top of my head? Hatchet. It was required reading in 8th grade, and I remember a lot of useful info from that book.

Take it with a grain of salt, and do further research on the stuff he says in here. This is NOT a survival guide. Scout's handbook would be more useful in the long run.

Our country is literally hanging by a thread and if and when it breaks all hell will come forth.

Should have had your parents put you in Cub and Boy Scouts. It's a prepping 101 college course. With a motto like "Always be prepared" I'm not sure a prepper couldn't find a better home at a young age. Hell it takes the average scout 13 years to compete the whole thing. More if you become Eagle and make a carrier out of it.

So in short find your nearest retired scout. If that's not an option your second best bet is to buy the Boy Scouts Handbook so you have a hard copy. For now you can always source the PDF version here. They do allow you to print straight off the site.

People will recommended all kinds of first steps into the prepping world but if you don't know the basics of survival your just someones Christmas present waiting to be opened.

Ex-Mil are good teachers also depending on their MOS but the majority of Ex-Mil are not survivalist in the traditional sense.

Example; General purpose troops are taught the basics of compass and map use. A scout can do the same just by looking at the position of the Sun, Moon, Stars, and natural formations.

There are a lot of elements to scouting that can translate into necessary tools for you to be a successful individual in your personal life. If you can, I'd recommend buying an original copy of this book but I suppose that a more recent edition could also do the trick.
