Sigh.

Monthly reminder to get a decent laser printer, such as a Brother. Don't buy inkjets, the cost of laser printers has dropped so much you don't need to gamble that some inkjet printer is the exception to the rule. For $60 + USB cable you don't need to guess. =/

u/tbonanno · 29 pointsr/VirginiaTech

Printers are super useful. If you don't have one and your roommate doesn't either, it's time to get your first laser printer.

Yes, it's only black and white, but as a student, that's all you need, if that. You'll never spend a fortune on ink ever again.

I have one of these. Best investment ever. Runs on wifi so it doesn't matter where you stash it, and a third party ink refill was like $12. I've had it t for a few years.

I remember days when you had to really think 3-4 times about what it is you wanted to print and whether it was worth it. I've actually printed a few books with this thing because it does front and back printing. And I'm only on my first refill.

Here's a $60 printer/scanner/fax color inkjet printer. Or here's a $60 monochrome laser printer. Both have duplex printing, and are consumer grade printers from a reputable brand that doesn't fuck you with ink/toner costs.

You could definitely buy an even cheaper printer with duplex capability, you'd just wind up paying more for ink.

u/jaseworthing · 7 pointsr/ATC

So it looks like you'd be looking at around $70 - 80 using a print service (though I'd be willing to bet you could get it much cheaper through a local print shop)

I know you said you didn't want to print at home, but you might wanna consider getting a cheap brother later printer and just printing it yourself.

Costs about the same as using a big name print service and you now you have a cheap efficient printer for when changes come out. The included toner should be more than enough for a copy or two of the 7110.65

I just did a quick search. I have one similar to this one. If you research a little bit you might be able to find something along the same lines that's better, around the same price.

If you have low print volume but need stuff often, a $200 printer will do you far better than a $30 printer with $60 ink every six months.

My $78 brother b&w printer (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NQ1CLTI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) is still using the starter items after 3 years.

You can spend $20 more and get a full function scanner, doc feeder, mobile printing if you'd like (https://www.amazon.com/Brother-Monochrome-Multifunction-DCPL2550DW-Replenishment/dp/B0764P8F5J/ref=sr_1_3_acs_ac_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1538922639&sr=1-3-acs&keywords=brother+laser+printer)

The OfficeJet looks to be a much more powerful device.

But InkJet printers are notorious for having very high operating costs, with HP being among the worst.

This little sucker right here:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/

Stupid simple print engine. (unlikely to paper jam)

Auto-Duplexing so you can print on both sides, and save paper.

And the toner cartridge might last you all four years of school.

I know you think you really need color right now. But I'm confident you'll discover color isn't as important as you think it is.

Toner is $53 for 2,600 pages.

Technical Reminder: WiFi printing won't be allowed in the dorms.
So forget about AirPrint or whatever.

If your printer has WiFi you will be instructed to disable it. If you can't figure out how to disable it, or if it can't be disabled, you will be instructed to remove the device from the dorms.

So grab an extra-long USB cable while you're at it...

An inexpensive Brother laser printer is your friend; they can be picked up for ~$80 and will print something like 2000 pages with the included cartridge. Maybe something like this

u/Pikmeir · 3 pointsr/videos

A printer like this [Referral link] or this [Not referral link] is pretty affordable.

Here [Refferal] and here [Not referral] is the toner cartridge, which isn't as cheap as an ink cartridge but lasts a heck of a lot longer.

For these two items you'll have a printer that'll last and toner that won't dry out and will print way more than regular ink.

I asked a question in the sub so I thought I might try to chime in and help...

This brother (link at bottom) printer always goes on sale at office supply stores, Best Buy, and Amazon for $60. You could check it once a week. Laser printers cost $20 for toners from Monoprice.com and print about 2,500 pages. Even if it prints 1,000 pages, it’s a good deal compared to inkjet.

It’s not blazing fast printing speed but it is small!

Separately, if you're looking for a monochrome laser printer, the Brother printer I picked up 8 (!) years ago is still working fine: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI

u/drivingdaily69 · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

Our family bought this one (or the comparable previous model) about 8 years ago. We’ve only had to buy one toner cartridge; aside from that, we’ve never had a problem with it whatsoever.

Edit: I wanted to add that we’ve printed off probably 1000ish sheets with this printer, and it’s always had superb printing quality too.

u/squidboots · 2 pointsr/Etsy

I have a Brother HL-2270DW I picked up a few years ago for $80 and I adore it, but they don't make it anymore so they're much more expensive to buy now. According to Amazon it's been replaced by the HL-L2300DW. If you don't need the wireless connectivity the HL-L2300D is MUCH less expensive!

For toner, I buy the EPS high-yield cartridges for my printer (the HL-L2300 printers I linked to you take a different cartridge size than the HL-2270 printer I have.) I like EPS because they offer a lifetime warranty so if I get a dud refill they replace it for no charge. They are about 1/3 the price of the OEM Brother cartridges.

u/iamactuallyalion · 2 pointsr/Birmingham

You may be better off buying a laserjet printer. I have a Brother laserjet that I bought when I was in nursing school and it was an invaluable resource. You can find toner cartridges with high yields for relatively cheap, too. Here's a link to the model I believe I have. Best of luck!

> How does the ethernet work in merrill? I have a chromebook that doesnt have an ethernet port, is there like a converter cable or something i can use?

There are two wifi networks campus-wide, cruznet and eduroam. cruznet is open and makes you click a terms of service every time. eduroam is secured and your devices will autoconnect every time, which in my opinion is much nicer than cruznet. The campus IT pages have great info about how to set up eduroam.

>I dont wanna buy a laptop backpack cuz they're usually ugly and exepensive, would it be weird if i used a purse or messenger bag? Or does it really not matter?

I just throw my 15" macbook pro into my backpack. I've got your typical jansport backpack. I have my laptop, somtimes a textbook, 2 3 subject notebooks, a 1" binder, graphing calculator, earbuds, pens, pencils, erasers, and a handful of junk.

>What about printing? People reccomend i bring a printer, but is that really necessary? My highschool had us turn papers and everything in online, is ucsc still doing like traditional physical copies of stuff? Are printers pretty available around campus?

Here's the deal with printing. Campus has a ton of printers, they're 10c a side for printing. So if you plan on printing more than 1000 pages it may be useful to have your own printer. I love having my own printer because I don't have to worry about running places to get stuff printed before I turn it in. It's great peace of mind. I've had to print way more stuff than I thought I would. This printer will run you about $100 but will work forever, prints double sided, and toner is super cheap. I printed 1200 pages with the "free" toner included with the printer( I have the old version of this one, I've printed 2500+ pages over my four years.)

>How bad are 9 am classes 🙃?

9am is not bad at all, fewer people show up so there's more armrest room. It's all a state of mind. Just decide you're always going to go to all your lectures, you'll do a lot better and stress about exams less. You've got to take the classes you need, just do it, don't worry about what time classes are at.

>Is there decent closet space (merrill double room)?

I'm a Kresge student, don't ask me.

>Anything i should bring that isnt usually thought of?

You'll find out you need less stuff than everyone says you do. Don't worry about it, live on campus for a quarter, buy anything you REALLY need, and then reevaluate at winter break or so. You'll be fine. Bring a good set of office supplies: stapler, scotch tape, ruler, variety of pens, pencils, erasers, binder clips... You'll find them super useful.

This is the one I've been using since freshman year:

https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/

It's currently going for $95, which is actually a lot more expensive than usual. I think it usually goes for like $60-$70, so maybe wait a bit and see if it comes back down.

It is only black-and-white, but it does have automatic duplex (double-sided-printing), so it's very convenient for printing out essays and readings and stuff.

It's been very reliable, and if you buy the off-brand toner cartridges (these are the ones I get), it's pretty cheap as well.

EDIT: One thing to note that caught me off guard when I bought it- It doesn't come with a USB cable, so maybe pick up one of those as well if you don't have one laying around.

> 1. Would you guys recommend getting a good laser printer for shipping labels, and stuff? Do you handle shipping labels by yourself or is it more efficient to go to the post office?

Almost always cheaper to do stuff yourself. There are label specific printers, but it seemed expensive for the materials and a specific printer rather than just using a printer I had (https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=brother+printer&qid=1566566649&s=gateway&sr=8-2 great price on it right now). You need a regular printer to print the receipt too.

I bought those labels that print two per sheet. I have to cut them for the size of bubble mailers I have. I only use the bubble for purchases > $20.

I've never had any issues with plain white envelopes, which with a stamp is < $1, bubble mailer shipped the lowest you can get is usually $3. One envelope pro-tip is that the left-window standard size envelopes you don't have to write an address on because the printed receipt can be folded for it to fit perfectly in the window.

> 2. What is the best price to hope for on bubble envelopes, team bags, toploaders?

I just got big packages of stuff on Azmazon. Look into team bags!

> 3. Any other tips are greatly appreciated.

Dial in your process. I print all current receipts, put them in a stack, then find all cards stuff them into loaders and fold the receipt up around it. Then I stuff the envelopes and ship everything at once per day. If more orders come in they wait until the next day. It actually takes a lot of focus to make sure you pack everything perfectly every time. Even so, I have still forgot a card, and had to send out a second package. You also want a kitchen scale, there is nothing more annoying as a buyer and unprofessional as a seller than not paying enough postage and your buyer having to pay for your mistake to get their cards.

FitShipper recommends this one. Depending on your volume and what you're using it for, a thermal printer might be better.

u/Haiiiiiiiiiii · 1 pointr/college

There are cheap brother/canon monochrome laser printers that will be efficient and have cheap third-party toner support.

Here's what I got, but if you look around, there are bound to be better deals on other monochrome lasers.

u/somberrypi · 1 pointr/printers

If you don't need to print in color, then you can buy a monochrome laser printer (like a Brother HL-L2300D which has duplex printing: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/ )and just purchase some cheap third party compatible toner cartridges on Amazon and print away all you want. But depending on how much you actually print, you should do the math to see whether if it is cheaper to print at Staples or to buy your own printer, cartridges and paper to print. In the long run, if you print hundreds of thousands of pages, then I think it is cheaper to just buy your own printer and print compared to going to Staples.

u/Lear_King_Of_Britain · 1 pointr/biology

If you insist on getting a printer, get a laser printer. Do not get an inkjet printer it will only cause headaches over time. For what it is worth, I did my entire undergrad without a home printer and only once or twice was it was real inconvenience. In grad school I just print occasionally with the office printer.

Get something like this. It looks expensive initially but quality and ease of use will make it worth it. You don't need a color printer. Black and white is great.

$40 at Amazon

u/Lehk · 1 pointr/techsupport

$108 prints both sides connects by USB
can sit standing by for months and print on demand without waste of ink.

there are higher and models for a bit more that connect over wifi and or ethernet so all the computers in the house can use them without having a "host machine" switched on, because that crap is so 2002

u/MrKane123 · 1 pointr/Flipping

If you use Chrome you might be able to set it up to cloud print

I personally have not made the upgrade to a thermal, but you will hear most people on here recommend them. Currently I'm using a Brother HL-L2300D Monochrome Laser Printer with Duplex Printing, looks like it's going for about $90 on amazon but I bought mine locally for about $40 and regular shipping labels.

I know there is a wi-fi enabled version of that printer out there too.

u/imares · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yo, how does this one look? I'm sorry for being a nag but I just want to make sure.

u/youRFate · 1 pointr/Pathfinder_RPG

When I started University I bought a Brother hl2250 dn black and white laser, probably one of the best decisions I made. It wasn't that expensive, it's a network printer, it has a duplexer unit and a refill toner for 5300 pages is €15. The driver is small, comes without any bloatware and just works. I also love that the paper tray holds about a full 500 pack of paper, so you don't have to constantly refill it.

I think that model isn't available anymore, but I'm sure they have a followup model.

Edit: Looks like the current itteration of that Printer is called HL-L2300D for the wired model, and HL-L22340DW for the wireless version.

u/Malawi_no · 1 pointr/printers

This one should do just fine - [Brother HL-L2300D] (https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=printer&qid=1549787729&refinements=p_89%3ABrother%2Cp_n_condition-type%3A6461716011&rnid=2941120011&s=electronics&sr=1-2)
Make sure you've got a cable of the correct kind (USB A - USB B), it's the same kind for all printers, so you might already have one laying around. If not you'll have to purchase ones, as it does not come with the printer.

u/frygod · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

There are different types of transferred print. Some transfer the entire surface of the page. Others just transfer the material printed. This may be of some use, depending on the thermal properties of the chosen resin. If you're not set up for laser printing, this is the successor to my favorite budget laser unit.

Silk screening would be more appropriate for large quantity production but wouldn't be the most cost effective method unless you plan to do a lot more with it (you'd need the equipment to do your developing and so on.)

u/BisonPuncher · 0 pointsr/FulfillmentByAmazon

You know what I hate online? When you ask a specific question and instead of getting a specific answer everyone just gives you alternatives

But I'm going to do that because I dont think a "standard" sized thermal printer actually exists on this earth.

https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2300D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00NQ1CLTI/ref=sr_1_5?s=office-electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1525625414&sr=1-5&keywords=brother+laser+printer

This thing is cheap, toner is cheap, it takes forever for the toner to run out, it prints very quickly, and it will do what you want. This is a standard sized printer that is priced less than one of those silly Zebra things everyone loves. Thermal laser printers are a waste of time. If you need labels you can buy them preprinted from a manufacturer, or print a big sheet. I have never met another high volume seller who uses a Dymo or a Zebra. I can print hundreds of labels before one of those things can print 5, and that isnt an exaggeration at all.
