I was thinking specifically of Sri Lanka, though there are other examples. Though the underlying philosophy is one of peace, one can say the same of Abrahamic faiths. The fact that humans are involved means that inevitably the teachings will be perverted and used to excuse extremism and violence.
It's fashionable to think of Buddhism as immune to these things, but like any other faith it's the people involved that really shape the reality.
