According to this page, your router has a maximum WAN-to-LAN throughput of ~88Mbps. With DD-WRT, it is likely slower (more memory and CPU being actively used), and with any features like SPI firewall, VPN passthru, etc, it could drop a bit more (possibly to ~50-60Mbps).

To get the full speeds, it looks like you're looking at an upgrade. I can personally recommend the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NHv2, I've used them in enterprise wifi deployment for a few years and get ~150Mbps WAN-to-LAN throughput. Runs about $70 right now on Amazon.

Buffalo AirStation High Power N300 Gigabit Wireless Router & AP WZR-HP-G300NH $65 from Amazon

Powered by DD-WRT, leading open-source firmware equipped with robust and high-performance features for custom configuration.

This, definitely. I bought one last year and love it. Tons of customization options too, via stock built-in dd-wrt.

Buffalo routers come with DD-WRT on the stock. WZR-HP-G300NH is probably the best choice for the money. About $65 on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-Technology-AirStation-Wireless-WZR-HP-G300NH/dp/B0028ACYEK/)

Buffalo G300NH Not bleeding edge but has good feature set, comes with dd-wrt pre-installed but also has an option for buffalo firmware, wifi is strong and has good range, the gigabit ethernet support is nice too.

This is what I have. It has great range and is compatible with DD-WRT. Otherwise I'd invest in a repeater.

Thanks! Those steps don't seem too bad. I've had my eye on this router from Buffalo for a while, maybe I'll actually take the plunge.

The odd thing is that I really haven't had many problems with this router. Everyone says it has big issues, so I assume it's providing me some amount of lag, but it's worked fairly well. I guess I don't tax it that much.

  • This for midrange consumer model.
  • This for high end consumer model.

Having done a lot of research myself these are my recommendations. Both support dd-wrt.

Thats true actually, the ones that have system resources enough to run Tor are just really expensive. Buffalo makes a few that will run OpenWrt and there are a couple mentioned in the tor website documentation here:

Thanks for correcting me! It would have been more accurate to say the hardware is out there, its just really expensive. The Buffalo Airstation mentioned is over $150
