I don't know if there is any wrong way to do it, other than just getting foam on as many of the hard surfaces as you can. Reverb is about sound being able to bounce around a space for a long time, and every dead surface a sound wave encounters is going to reduce the amount of reverb. So get a rug down if you have a hard floor, think about your ceilings and put foam tiles up on the walls!
I don't know if this is the kind of 'trick' you're looking for, but I built out a podcasting studio for work last year and I didn't want to use spray adhesive to get the tiles stuck to the walls, so what I ended up using were these T pins. They stick into drywall nicely, and are pretty secure if you give them a couple taps with a mallet.
I use t-pins.

They make very small holes that are easily filled with spackle.
