I just clean it everyday before the start of a new bowl. Works out pretty well. I picked up formula 420 and it's meh, doesn't do anything better than alcohol & salt.
For anyone cleaning a bong you gotta check these out.

The smallest one is great for any 14.4 fittings. The medium one is good for 18.8 fittings. And the largest one is nice for the neck of the bong.
You gotta clip the little white cotton ball off to get the small one to work with 14.4 fittings, but it's totally worth it. With a splash of alcohol, and the brushes you can have a dirty bong pristine in about 10 minutes.
I have this brush set with microfiber tips, that works really well at getting the stuff (gently) off the bottom and small indents: https://www.amazon.com/Casabella-20530-Soft-Tip-Brushes/dp/B000I21LLC
I haven't ever used them, but these guys make brushes specifically for tiki mugs and glassware (scroll down for the pic): https://www.loungeloot.com/cocktail-supplies
My two cents based on my experience.

Scrub the bottom pretty good and where the threads for the cap go. You don't have to scrub the sides to thoroughly because the hot water + One step gets most of the residue off. After that I just fill it about half way with just water.....cap it and shake it a bit and dump it.
Hope these hints were helpful.
I also live in an apartment without a dishwasher. I use these brushes to clean out my Kitchen-Aid. They work better than just a sponge, but it's still lots of work to clean.
