I'm from Indianapolis--real close to Weber's home state of Illinois, and home to the only other Weber Grill restaurant outside of Chicago--and I've seen a lot of Weber grills, around. My family has always owned Weber grills, and probably always will, because they're great for what we use them for.

Having said that, I now live in Memphis, TN, which is arguably one of the top BBQ capitals of the world. I don't even see Weber grills in the stores, around here. All I ever see are barrel-type grills with chimneys, like this (what is the chimney for? I don't know, but everybody's got one, here), or custom-made huge grills, like this. I occasionally see a Big Green Egg, too.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Weber isn't the only name in grills.

Char Griller makes what you have with an offset box as well and also fits pretty much all other critetia. With some mods, it's an amazing smoker and usually pretty cheap to get. https://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-1224-Smokin-Square-Charcoal/dp/B0009NU5YY

I'm very much enjoying mine and besides repainting the firebox so far maintenance had been minimal. The Charcoal tray serves as a great diffuser for heat. Rotisserie can be popped in too.

Look at your local home improvement store. I ran a CharGriller Pro offset, which I got used, for 7 years until it rusted out and I upgraded to a pellet pooper

But, if you want quality without spending a fortune, save your pennies for a Weber. You can bbq on a kettle (as your pics have shown), but the Weber Smokey Mountain is a much beloved backyard smoker

I see. I'll look them over and see what I think. Thanks!

What is your opinion on this grill? I was really planning on being simple and just buying a simple barrel smoker/grill.
